2.0 out of 5 stars Better for Baby-Boomers and Older
I am a movie fanatic, but I am only 22 years old. The game was purchased by family who thought it was a perfect match, and I was excited too...until I started playing it. No one knew the answers to any of the questions. Nearly all of the questions dealt with movies and people that were big long before I was born, so I would recommend only the most hard-core film buffs...

My husband and I bought this game not having played it previously. It just sounded like fun since we are both such movie buffs. Well after reading the directions, I was a little worried about playing it but we tried it and just loved it. My friends and I love playing board games when we get together and while they were uncertain about being able to play it, they are not the movie nuts that we are, they had a great time. They have purchased it as well. We've played many games in one night! The object of the game is for your team to get two actor cards, 2 location cards, one director card and one screenplay card to win. You collect the cards by earning points for the questions your team answers. The game cards have five sections called "Take 1 through to Take 5. Take 1 gives you a category, drama, comedy, etc., and five clues for your team to guess a movie title. Take 2 has your teammate guess either an actor's name or movie title - you have to think of the clues to give. Take 3 is a riot - drawing a movie title is a blast. Take 4 is guessing an actor's name by not giving their movie titles -- just giving tidbits about their life, the storyline of one of their movies, or by doing an imitation of them. Take 5 gives you three movie titles and your team has to tell which one doesn't belong. All game play is by timer and each team has an opportunity to steal the points if your team does not get the answer correctly (exception to this is Take 2 which you cannot steal). The movies go from really old, black & white, to today's movies. The questions run from the really challenging to easy. We are really glad we bought it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A movie-centric "Cranium", January 13, 2004

I got this game for Christmas and, being a movie buff, I popped it right open, gathered up some family and gave it a whirl. It's not a fantastic game, but it is a lot of fun. The object is to assemble a "film crew" by winning cards with the names of directors, actors, locations and movie titles on them -- to do this, you win chips by playing various movie trivia games: word association, imitation, drawing and more. It reminds me of another favorite game of mine, "Cranium," in that it combines lots of other games.

The only complaint I have about the manufacture of the game are the clear yellow chips you accumulate to purchase your cards -- on certain surfaces the chips become almost invisible, and I'm still not certain I didn't lose a couple in a plush carpet.

Still, it's a lot of fun, and while it will primarily appeal to movie buffs, there are enough different games and diverse enough questions to give everyone a fun time.

No one knew the answers to any of the questions. Nearly all of the questions dealt with movies and people that were big long before I was born, so I would recommend only the most hard-core film buffs (as in UCLA Graduate film history student) or those over the age of 40 should purchase this game. Even though it seems like it could be a very fun game, it hasn't left my shelf since last Christmas and has been collecting a very impressive collection of dust.

I love trivia games, especially film trivia. But you don't really need to be a film buff (though it helps a lot) to play this game. Sometimes luck alone can help you win this game because the point of the game is to win 5 cards to make a movie: one director, two actors, one screen play, and one location. Based on your luck, you may never draw the card you need so the game can continue on forever. I think that is the only part of the game that wasn't well thought out so we had to modify the rules to have a tiebreaker if it runs on too long without anyone winning. The game has 5 different modes of play.

1) Take One: There are 5 clues about a movie that you read off, and your team member can make a guess per clue. The amount of chips you earn is based on how many clues you have to go through.
2) Take Two: this one is the most fun because you're given a mixture of actors and movie titles which you have to allow your team member to guess.
3) Take Three: you have to draw the movie title. Sometimes its really easy to guess and sometimes its really hard. Just like Pictionary.
4) Take Four: Lists a name of an actor where you can act it out, but can't give their movie titles.
5) Take Five: guessing which movie doesn't belong out of three movies. The other team has a chance to steal as long as they guess the connection between the movies that do match. We modified this one with giving each side an extra point if they can guess the connection.

A friend and I are total movie buffs and we played against another team who were just casual movie goers and the other team still managed to win because we were unlucky with finding the last card to win. However, if it was purely based on film trivia, film buffs should win hands down. The game is extremely specific, where you have to give movie titles and their subtitles. For example, you'd have to know the exact title like Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, otherwise you wouldn't get the point. There's everything from Disney to film noir so there should be something for everyone. For actors or movies you don't know, you definitely want to go back and search IMDB to figure out what's what after you play the game.

There are also a ton of cards to go through and 5 modes per card so I don't think you'd really repeat cards unless you play all the time.

The game says it's recommended for ages 8 and up, but seriously, I think you'd have to be at least in your 20s to play. Unless you're an 8 year old prodigy that watches movies all day, I don't really think it's for children or teenagers unless they're already movie buffs.
