Looks good on paper...,

This review is from: University Physics Vol 1 (Chapters 1-20) (12th Edition) (Paperback)
I agree that this book has all of the examples, comparisons & myriad of practice problems that an instructor looks for in a physics textbook, but from a student's perspective, trying to learn brand new concepts, I find this book very difficult to learn from. The text uses new-to-the-reader symbols and equations very densely, so that I cannot simply read a sentence from beginning to end without having to re-read the sentence a few times to understand its meaning. Separating the conceptual physics text from the symbol-rich technical physics text would do wonders for helping me to learn physics from this book. That aside, Amazon provided me with a HUGE bargain on this book, and I received it in great shape with very minor wear and no writing inside it anywhere.

I've used the entire University Physics series in my college courses and am very impressed. The chapters are laid out in a very clear manner with each chapter having an overarching concept, and then that concept is broken down into more basic ideas with a few worked out examples for each. Every important equation is highlighted. Pictures are useful and diagrams are nearly always clear and useful. At the end of each chapter is a very handy summary with all the equations as well. Then, there are more practice problems than you could ever hope to finish to truly hone your skills. I was not a fan of lecture, so I mostly used the textbook in order to teach myself physics, and found that I was very successful in doing so. My only complaint is that some concepts that are explained in the text are not as clear as they could be and I had to turn to external sources to clarify any confusion I had. 4 stars for being an excellent book with the only flaw being some unclear topics. Might I recommend Schaum's Outline for Physics if you are struggling with any of the concepts that don't seem clear in this text.

I found this text book as very clear and easy to move on through the chapters. The listed examples help to solve problems of the quizzes and exams. The web site has to be modernized though. Mastering Physics helped me a lot, however visual presentation has to be improved. No complains about the text book.
And about the one star review: When people learn to rate the item separately from the rating a seller? Amazon should make it color coded or something like that, so unsatisfied with the seller customers do not confuse others with their reviews.
