This review is from: University Physics Vol 1 (Chapters 1-20) (12th Edition) (Paperback)
I agree that this book has all of the examples, comparisons & myriad of practice problems that an instructor looks for in a physics textbook, but from a student's perspective, trying to learn brand new concepts, I find this book very difficult to learn from. The text uses new-to-the-reader symbols and equations very densely, so that I cannot simply read a sentence from beginning to end without having to re-read the sentence a few times to understand its meaning. Separating the conceptual physics text from the symbol-rich technical physics text would do wonders for helping me to learn physics from this book. That aside, Amazon provided me with a HUGE bargain on this book, and I received it in great shape with very minor wear and no writing inside it anywhere.

I've used the entire University Physics series in my college courses and am very impressed. The chapters are laid out in a very clear manner with each chapter having an overarching concept, and then that concept is broken down into more basic ideas with a few worked out examples for each. Every important equation is highlighted. Pictures are useful and diagrams are nearly always clear and useful. At the end of each chapter is a very handy summary with all the equations as well. Then, there are more practice problems than you could ever hope to finish to truly hone your skills. I was not a fan of lecture, so I mostly used the textbook in order to teach myself physics, and found that I was very successful in doing so. My only complaint is that some concepts that are explained in the text are not as clear as they could be and I had to turn to external sources to clarify any confusion I had. 4 stars for being an excellent book with the only flaw being some unclear topics. Might I recommend Schaum's Outline for Physics if you are struggling with any of the concepts that don't seem clear in this text.

I found this text book as very clear and easy to move on through the chapters. The listed examples help to solve problems of the quizzes and exams. The web site has to be modernized though. Mastering Physics helped me a lot, however visual presentation has to be improved. No complains about the text book.
And about the one star review: When people learn to rate the item separately from the rating a seller? Amazon should make it color coded or something like that, so unsatisfied with the seller customers do not confuse others with their reviews.

Good book,
This review is from: University Physics Vol 1 (Chapters 1-20) (12th Edition) (Paperback)
This is a pretty good physics book. I agree with a lot of the other reviews. One of the things I liked best was that the end of each chapter has a list of all of the equations taught in that chapter. Mark each end-of-chapter page and it makes things a lot easierHowever, before you buy this you should know that if you are taking the next physics class too (Electricity and Magnetism), check to see if your school uses University Physics Volume 2. If it does, you can buy a hardcover that includes this book AND that book for about the same price as each individual book. In other words, if you buy the books separately, you will get pretty flimsy paper backs AND pay twice as much. It might even be a good idea to get the hardcover book if you don't use it for both classes, as it will provide a valuable resource and be more durable than the Mechanics-only paperback version. It's doesn't cost that much more. I wish I would've.

The book arrived within the time stated and as described. If I needed another book from this buyer, I would do it again. One thing that I did not realize is that the book was not hardcover. But that's okay.

Very good book used for my mechanic class, cant say we use it for its theory; mostly for the problems, some are pretty complexe.

My book arrived two days before it was estimated for arrival!!!! Book is in excellent condition. I'm still amazed by how fast they got this book to me. Next time I do more textbook shopping I'll definitely check with this retailer first.

Saved myself over 80 dollars by buying from this seller. What also came with the paperback textbook was a masteringphysics code which allows an e-text so I don't have to lug it around everywhere but I'm not sure if this is the same for all the textbooks they ship. Anyways highly recommended =)
