Product Description

The traditional rainsticks originated in northern Chile where they are used in ceremonies to bring rain. Made from the skeleton of the capado cactus: when the cactus dies it is dried, hollowed out, and filled with small seeds or pebbles. Small nails are driven through the hull of the cactus in a spiral formation, and when the rainstick is inverted the fill striking the nails creates the sound of water falling. As you use your rainstick the seeds will polish and develop an even finer sound. These rainsticks will not wear out, they only wear in. Due to the natural materials used, this instrument is somewhat fragile in nature and will need to be handled with care.

Good sound out of a traditionally constructed rainstick. The one I got was HUGE. Not just 30" long, but a good 5"+ in diameter. It gives one many options for how fast and heavy the "rain" falls. With a "light shower" one can rain for a very long time - else one can dump it all at once for a "deluge," although this powerful sound is not particularly rain-like. There's an entire range of sounds and durations in between. If you're looking for an impressive and useful rainstick, this is THE ONE to buy.

Years ago I had a large rainstick that I bought in a mall store which has been long gone. As was my rainstick when I got divorced. On a whim one evening I typed in rainsticks and it came up here. And at a very reasonable price.

I recently received my 2 rainsticks. The shipment arrived in excellent time and packaged very well and safe. I purchased one of the 30" sticks and one 20" stick. The 30" stick is a christmas present for my dad and I ordered the 20" for myself. I should have spent the extra money and bought two of the 30" rainsticks. The 20" stick is nice but for a greater effect and sound, the 30" stick is far better and well worth the money. I plan on ordering the 30" stick for myself at a later date.

My 9-year-old niece really enjoyed this rainstick. It was a nice size, sounded good, and was pretty well made. This rainstick was also very affordable. It took me awhile to find the right rainstick, and there is a large selection to choose from.

Some rainsticks are really expensive and promise a really good sound. They may even be very large. The problem is, when you get into larger rainsticks, they aren't always that durable, and they can also be too heavy, or bulky especially for kids. They make cheaper rainsticks too, but they tend to be poorly made, or really small. They even make plastic rainsticks, but you don't get the same sound as a natural cactus rainstick. Although, some kids prefer the plastic ones, because they are translucent, and you get to see how everything works inside.

I decided on this rainstick, because its the right size, is made of natural cactus, is pretty durable and is affordable. My younger niece, who is now 3-years-old, also really enjoyed this rainstick, although its still a bit heavy for her to use on her own. This is a blunt object, so if the kid is really small, you may want to keep an eye on them, to make sure they don't hurt themselves, others, the family pet or the furniture. After all, it is still a stick.

I remember, as a little kid, I had a teacher who would quiet down the class using a rainstick. There is something about the sound that kids and adults really enjoy.

I was very impressed with the size of the rain stick. It's thicker then I thought and it's at least 30". After price shopping, this was by far the best bang for the buck. It has lots of seeds inside and seems to last a good time. It's a little big for small hands but my daughter enjoys watching in amazement as the sound comes rolling down the stick. Probably by the time she's 3 or 4 she'll be running around the house with this rain stick.

Very good quality. more fragile than i thought but will work just fine. Made of light weight cactus, can be broken if dropped hard due to the light weight/dead wood. Natural looking. i love it!

I've had the privilege of traveling and hearing real rain sticks. I've never bought one because you can't have the real McCoy without laying out 1-3 hundred dollars. In a moment of nostalgic weakness I thought maybe I could have the real deal without the huge investment. Silly me. This stick lacked the sound (you're more likely to imagine plain old noise, sand or small gravel falling or maybe a baby rattle, but not rain). You'll also lack the other dimension of the real McCoy and that's the tendency to go on and on, this one was done in about 3-4 seconds tops; it's just a rush from one end to the other of whatever materials they've put in there. I think this product might be improved if it had less material and material of dissimilar sizes and minerals, but then I'm not a musicologist, nor am I am expert in igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary rocks. I've just heard the real thing many times and you distinctly hear rain, you don't have to pretend. If you are a real enthusiast stop at a real trading post and listen to the real thing. It may be beyond your pocket book, but it wont be beyond your appreciation. I can't afford the real Mona Lisa either, but if I'm not mistaken there are a lot more Indian craftsmen out there making these and there was only Leonardo da Vinci. If you don't hear rain pass on it.
