The best train toy we have!, November 3, 2003

We have three sons, ages 6, 4, and 2. We own just about every train toy ever made, including tons of Brio and Thomas toys. Of all the train toys we've purchased, this one is by far the favorite. The kids love it because it's easy to put together and the pieces actually stay in place. They also love the remote controls and all of the "jobs" that they can make their trains do. We love it because for less than $40 we have a toy that will entertain all of our children for hours at a time! They create elaborate stories about their trains and will act them out on the GeoTrax.
My one piece of advice is to invest in a very (very!) large plastic bin in which to store the train and all its pieces. We now own the train set, fire engine set, and construction set, and they do take up quite a bit of space. I'll gladly find the room for it, though- the kids love it!

As railfan parents of a young railfan, our family is attracted to train-related toys... as long as they don't have cartoon faces on the front, which drives me crazy. I am so impressed with this set, which shows a lot of thought and careful design. My engineer's hat is off to the folks who did such a great job.
First, the set is wonderfully complete. While there are plenty of fun add-ons to buy, you can have oodles of fun with the set as is. There is enough track and enough activity centers to make it a very fulfilling toy. The value for the money is excellent.
The track goes together and stays together well. The train is designed to either be pushed along by the child or to run via the remote control. Both work well, and both are a lot of fun. I am impressed that it is seamless to move between the two modes - the wheels don't lock up or anything. It is pretty easy for even my three-year old to put the cars together and put them on the track. The cars stay together (barring derailment accidents).
The train climbs the hill quite well, and though the fast roll down is not realistic, it makes my daughter squeal with delight. Impressively, even though we have it laid out with a sharp turn at the bottom, the train stays on the track just fine.
I love all the assorted centers! They hook on to the track, which keeps them from getting jostled out of place and puts them at just the right distance. At the pipeworks, you can dispense pipes right on to the waiting train (the smokestack goes up and down, too!) and then drive the train over to the gantry where you can grab the pipes off the train. You do have to use your hands to pry the pipes out of the gantry once grabbed. The coal mine comes with enormous lumps of coal that you can drop into a waiting car, and there are also two boxes to use as cargo.
I do have some complaints. First, the engine especially is not very aesthetically pleasing. The cars are fine. I don't really like the red power light on top (it could've been a white headlight) and it's very squat and could look more like an engine. This is a quibble - functionally it works well, and I respect that. Also, the 'chug chug chug' noise is too loud for the quality of the speakers. Fortunately, you can run without that. It might be nice if the remote had a separate button that would let you blow the whistle once without activating the other sounds. You can kind of do this with the remote, but it is a little tricky. Lastly, the switches might be better if they were a bit stiffer - we have had the trains over time move the switches.
Overall, a wonderfully toddler-friendly set, designed to be workable by small kids without parent intervention, and hours and hours of big fun. Ideally, your child will let you play, too!

Im sure this will be on many Santa lists this year. Great toy for all kids, from toddlers to 6 and 7 year olds. Its fun, expandable, well built, keeps their interest, so much to do! And all at a reasonable price. What more could we want!
