In short, this is an amazing doll. In many ways she is like a little person for my daughter to care of. She has a distinct personality and a lot of fun play. My daughter has played with her for hours and she still says new things!
I think the previous bad review may have been related to the age of the child, which was four. The box says five and up. As far as the reliability of the speech recognition, my own daughter can get the doll to work almost all the time. Granted my daughter is seven and has a clear voice. I would NOT recommend this toy to anyone whose daughter has a speech impediment or is a soft talker. (Of course the doll might teach your daughter how to speak louder, which may be a plus.) Also it states clearly in the instructions that you need to be in a QUIET room, which really is a no-brainer for a product like this. Anyone who has used cell phones or other speech-recognition products knows the drill. Kids however (especially very young ones) dont. So you do have to teach them a bit. So how does she play? Well the setup is a bit of a pain. You have to set her time and date, and then she asks for your daughter to say her name a few times so she can learn her voice. Then she teaches your daughter how to play with her. Here are some of the things I've seen her do: - ask for and go potty. (This is funny and a bit gross. As a man I don't get it but my daughter loves it.) - eat. (You feed her all kinds of food, which she knows when you put it in her mouth. Feed her the wrong thing and she knows and comments about it.) - play games. (She sings and plays some animal sounds game. Pretty cute.) - get sick. (you hug her to make her feel better) ... plus a bunch of other stuff. She also knows the general time of day, and the holidays, and has things to say about that, too. Another thing is her face is pretty expressive. She will actually pout and put on a sad face in some situations. Her eyebrows move too. What I can't get over is all you get for the price. For basically the cost of two high-end dolls that do nothing, you get a doll that is almost alive. This is soooo much more interactive. We also got a batteries low warning but the doll kept running for quite some time after so I just waited for her to stop. That took maybe five hours? Which seems ok to me... Well that's all I can think of. Amazing Amanda is a doll that lives up to her name.

I bought this doll for my 5 year old daughter and it is a HIT! It's the best doll she's ever had. We were nervous to purchase her because of all the bad reviews, however we've not had any problems at all with the exception of having to replace batteries, which is really no different than any of her other battery operated toys. This is the best doll ever!

I recently purchased this doll for my 7-year old daughter. She absolutely loves it and constantly fights over it with her 2-year old sister. I cannot stand it, though! It is annoying, repetitive, and constantly announces that it's batteries are low. This infuriates me! I believe a doll that costs $100.00 should come with rechargeable batteries. Instead, we are putting three new "C" batteries in it every two days. This is no exaggeration! I would not recommend this doll until improvements are made on its battery efficiency.

This is one great doll, truley unreal I agree with the one person who said it was no good for a 4 year old for you need to have a clear voice to program it. The first setup took about a hour you do need to be in a quiet room and have to wait untill Amanda stops talking befor you say the command and after that for the next day the doll does repeat itself over and over again but a week later its fine. My kid carrys the doll where ever she goes and takes care of it like a real baby. Way advance from dolls that I have ever seen. The only suggestion I would have for the maker is why they didn't make it so the child could name it? I think that will be next. But of all the toys I bought my children over the years this has got to be the best.

I got this a week ago for my daughter to play with, because her stupid box fooled me into thinking she really was amazing.
With Amazing Amanda, Jessica had to say her name for 25 minutes until she FINALLY reconized her voice. It annoyed us when Amanda said "You are not my mommy" over and over. It also annoys us when she wants Jessica to feed her "breakfast." she'll giva Aamnda a pancake, but Amanda'll say "Silly mommy! Cookie not for breakfast." Same thing with her potty...Amanda doesn't even reconize when she's on her potty and complain that she had another "accident" again. We didn't even get our money back when we sent her in!!!!!!!!!!!

This is hands down the most annoying doll I've ever had the misfortune of spending $100.00 on. How MANY times do you have to say her name and why do you have to continue to repeat it over, and over... It's so bad that I turned it off and now at least my little girl plays with it instead of throwing it in frustration. Agree with previous reviewer, it burns through batteries at the rate of lightspeed. This wouldnt be so bad if you could use rechargeable batteries, but nooooo. Not with this doll. Plus, if it runs out of batteries you'll have to repeat the long, tedious set up AGAIN!
No Amanda, I'm NOT your mommie! You need to go home now. Save you money - this toy is the first one you'll hide or convieniantly loose after christmas. The frustration just isnt worth it.

I am outraged to have spent $100 for this kind of frustruation. When these commercials started airing, this doll looked to be marvelous. My daughter was desperate to have it. So we bought it for her birthday, noting the hefty price tag. But I thought surely this was a reasonable price if she does all the things she's supposed to according to the box. Boy was I mistaken. Nothing about this doll functions properly. The set up is worse than setting up my VCR. She says the same irritating things over and over "mommy say my name". So my daughter yells Amanda at her for the next 20 minutes and it seems she's not having a very good time. Amanda also keeps repeating "You're not my mommy" and "you look funny upside down mommy". What the...? She asks to "go potty" and then when you put her on it she doesn't recognize it. Then she gets pitiful and says "i had an accident, I'm sorry mommy". This breaks my daughter's heart as she got her to the potty immediately. The batteries are dead in a flash. My daughter was so frustrated with this doll that she hasn't offered to touch it since the first day (we've had it a month). Here are a few words to describe how we feel about Amazing Amanda... angry, frustrated, dissappointed, irritated, and ripped off. Make sure you keep your box and receipt for returning purposes. Your gonna need them.

I bought Amazing Amanda for my daughter's 6th birthday. She opened her and played with her for 15 minutes on 10/22. After letting the doll sit for two hours, we smelled something "funny" and Amanda's back was too hot to even touch. I immediately turned her off. After waiting a while, I removed the batteries, which were burning hot. I contacted the number on the instructions that came with the doll. I was quickly shipped a new doll (sent with batteries in her already). The person I talked to on the phone stated that they have had "a few" instances when the batteries weren't lining up with the coils, and were overheating.
My daughter played with doll #2 for about 10 minutes when she got her. She then spent about a week on her dresser. She took her out and played with her again for maybe 1/2 hour tops, and Amanda kept saying her batteries were low. I replaced the batteries, and she played with her for a little while. My daughter cannot stand that every 5 minutes Amanda is asking her to "say my name mommy" and "was that a yes, or a no" and the doll very rarely "hears" her, and we speak into her microphone in her chest. My daughter wants me to put her away. So, back to the dresser. I took her out yesterday for a friend, and after 3 days of new batteries, Amanda wants new batteries. I have to say, my daughter is annoyed with this toy, I am sick of putting batteries in it. I spent $100 on it, and wish I hadn't. My friend's daughter wanted Amanda for Christmas...until I told her about the batteries and the first doll burning up. She changed her mind. I just wanted somebody to be aware that this doll is horrible. Also, the coloring on her lips in flaking off everywhere from sticking the food into her mouth.

My mother purchased Amazing Amanda for my 6 yr old and it is a complete disappointment! After the ridiculous amount of time and patience it takes to "program" the doll's calendar and clock, it asks to say some words like spaghetti and pizza. My daughter speaks very clearly and loud enough and yet Amanda doesn't recognize what she's saying and asks her to repeat herself. Then it's time to say her name so she can recognize my daughters "pretty voice". After my daughter repeats this process SEVERAL times, Amanda will say "ok Mommy, what should we do now?" When told to play or sing, Amanda goes back to asking her to say her name so that she can remember her pretty voice, and repeats this process over, and over and over again. Then she'll turn around and say, "you don't sound like my Mommy...will Mommy be home soon?". ABSOLUTELY THE WORST TOY I'VE EVER SEEN AND CERTAINLY NOT WORTH $20 MUCH LESS $105.00!!! Oh, and the 3 C batteries lasted less than 3 wks. That might not be that much of a big deal, except my kids didn't play with her that much because she is very frustrating AND...you have to go through the ENTIRE REPROGRAMMING CYCLE (date, time, etc) every time you change the batteries. I just put new batteries in her and my daughter cannot get her to work. SUCKY TOY.

This is a fab doll! My daughters have all the dolls that you can imagine, like baby annabell and baby born. We also have amazing ally but she is nowhere near as sweet as amanda! Amanda is just like a real little girl, she is a pretty typical little girl who makes noises, cries and shows her emotions. She is dressed in a cute dress and also comes with her nightie which is adorable too. She also has a number of food items, including an oreo cookie and pasta etc. She is a typical blonde, blue eyed american little girl who is the ideal size of a toddler. She will be your best friend and care and listen to your problems and will hug you to make you feel happy again! She will sing to you and let you play games with her and she will also tell you fun stories! She also goes to sleep at the same time as you so you dont have to listen to her talking all night! Buy this doll now, although she costs quite a bit of money she is well worth it as she will be your long lasting best friend forever even when your feeling blue and snappy! BUY HER NOW!!We have to buy another amanda doll as one is simply not enough as all my daughters want her as a best buddy!
