My Cabin Cot

The Cabin Cot will revolutionize your view of tent camping!

I was looking for a `step up' of sorts from the world of the two shock corded dome tent experience. I'm not very partial to any of the `high-tech' tents either as the price tags for those tents seem like highway robbery. Tent pads are OK but add to the overall bulk of what I need to carry and they really do not effectively stop the dampness that invariably comes through the ground while camping...well..on the ground.

On my research journey I ran across many variants and adaptations to the problem of getting off the ground. Very interesting are the tent on top of the roof haciendas brought to us by the fine folks down under with their `out in the bush' designed survival tents. If I were in bear country and didn't have a hard sided accommodation, I could see the attraction to such devices, however, anyone thinking of the late night stumble to find the facilities should perhaps think through the prospect of climbing a slim ladder down your SUV in the middle of the night.

Other options I have seen included elaborate systems to elevate the earlier mentioned dome tents off the ground, however, the weight and the multiple component configurations were a turn off.

Enter the `Cabin Cot'..In the genre of getting off the ground I found two choices: the first was a `tent cot' which combines both the cot and the tent in one device and then the `cabin cot' which simply adds the `cabin' to the `cot'. I wasn't convinced that the tent being permanently attached to the cot was a good thing. Has anyone ever looked at the sheets on a motel spare cot? I imagined the tent materials getting jammed and degrading over time. In addition, what if I (on a rare occasion) needed to use the tent portion as a bivy..no can do with the `tent cot' .

Go buy the Cabin Cot if you want absolute hassle free tent camping experience. Sound like an Oxy Moron? Well, here were my observations:

The Cabin Cot is very well thought out. I purchased the 82" x 32" Deluxe version that fits the Slumberjack Big Cot. If you can't find this version at an online retailer, you can order via the manufacturer website at:

http://www.venturacampsystems.com/specs.html

Really, its this simple.

You put the provided bar ends in both sides of the cot. Thread two high quality shock cords on each end of the cot. Stretch the conveniently located stretch cords over the ends of the bar ends. Put a small bar across the top to keep the ends separated. Throw in your pillow and sleeping bag and you'll be snoozing in no time.

The set up and break down could not be easier.

Quality, Quality, Quality

You can't help but hear yourself thinking, how come someone didn't think of this sooner?

I had the opportunity to call the company and speak with the inventor. He couldn't believe it either but developed this product out of a challenge from a family member.

The only recommendation for improvement that I have is my next step of adding a 30" x 74" Futon Mattress which I purchased from www.futonland.com The mattress is a foam core 8" thick futon mattress which I will put right on top of the cot inside the cabin cot. Camping has never been cosier. (You need to special order this size by calling the toll free number from the site)

To all the skeptics and the fearful, step out of your comfort zone (and into a new one) and buy the Cabin Cot, you will not be disappointed!
