5.0 out of 5 stars Cast Iron needs to be seasoned.
I just purchased a Cast iron humidifier and love it-$5.95 at the local thrift store.Cast iron needs to be seasoned, just like a cast iron skillet.Clean your cast iron item, dry it out, then rub bacon grease on it,inside and out(that's the best way)or olive oil or shortening and bake it in the oven for an hour or so-that should stop the rust, let it cool down in the oven.One...

3.0 out of 5 stars EHH, NOT GREAT
The kettle does function, but the paint is flaking off. I use this on my wood burning stove, and it does steam up and humidify, but the paint isn't great. I am planning on re-painting it. so, it works for what I bought it for, but its not pretty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a way to keep the nostrils from drying out, June 15, 2006
By
This cast iron kettle is very sturdy and it looks great on our wood stove. Keeping it full of water while burning a fire to keep the house warm is a great way to keep moisture in the air. Before using this kettle, it became hard to breathe since my nose and throat would dry out. Now there are no worries!

I would recommend this kettle for anyone who uses a wood stove or burns a fire for household heat.

4.0 out of 5 stars nice humidifier!, March 7, 2008
This review is from: Cast Iron Kettle Humidifier
We like this kettle very much. It could not be used as a teapot - it gets rusty on the inside - and it is very heavy and somewhat difficult to lift; but it sits on top of the wood stove and helps to humidify our house in the dry winter. Excellent value for the money!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic Rustic Kettle, February 21, 2007

If you have a wood-burning stove in your home or cabin, this is an essential item. It restores much needed humidity where wood-stoves can tend to dry out a room or environment. It's also made of heirloom quality cast-iron and is sure to last many generations.

3.0 out of 5 stars Any pot will do, September 25, 2010

We used this product for a short period of time. There were too many things going against it. The top ends up needing to be removed completely as it gets WAY too hot to handle and basically is in the way. The kettle needs to be refilled frequently and in order to do this, you need to either get boiling water in another kettle off the stove and refill it, or take it off the stove and set it on a trivet of some sort to cool completely. The kettle is quite hefty especially with water in it. The handle gets very hot, so have a glove ready to use if you need to take it off the stove to add wood etc (we have a top load - another strike against the kettle - you have to take it off frequently to add wood). It also rusts almost immediately and that won't clean off even with a brillo pad.
ANY pot will work - especially if you use a trivet to even out the heat distribution. You do not need one of these cute kettles to add heat. That is the only plus it has going for it really - it is cute. It adds to the rustic charm of a woodstove. We have a much lighter pot sitting on top of a trivet and it is easier to use, is an old enamel pot and does not rust. The kettle will become a planter :-)

This is a good, substantial (heavy) product. It withstands being on the stove top without water, a not too uncommon condition.
However when the stove top is hot and the kettle nearly full, it spits water rather than steam. The solution is, of course, to learn not to overfill it by trial and error. So it's a user fault rather than a product fault. Nonetheless, it's a fault that should be realized.

3.0 out of 5 stars Smells strange, March 4, 2007

This is a great idea, and looks great in the house, but the first time I used it, it smelled a horrible chemical smell throughout the house. When I went to change/add water, I noticed the bottom of the pot was all "bubbly", the sides a bit like this too. I could scrape of the bottom coating with a spoon. Maybe mine was defective? I know this will just be decoration as I am afraid to heat water in it now!

Was looking for a "humidifier" for our wood stove in stead of just a pot on the stove. Saw this one and thought we'd give t a try. The price was right. I seasoned in inside and out before we filled it with water, but the insides still rusted up quite a bit. No Biggy. Takes heat from the stove well and starts steaming quickly. You have to watch how much water you put in it or you get spatter. Another thing is you have to refill it quite often, we use our wood stove 24/7, and have to refill the kettle roughly 3 times a day depending on how hot we run the stove to match outside temps (more if it's really cold outside like temps 20 and lower when we really let the stove hum). If it's around 28 at night and we damp down the stove and fill it right before we go to bed it'll be almost dry by the time we get up. Could be bigger capacity wise. It will discolor from moister coming out through the lid and spattering from the spout, not to mention your stove top. But if you can live with this, and the times you'll need to refill it then it'll be worth it to you.
But for decorative purposes, it's okay. I've not seen anything for a wood stove yet that matches a big pot for hassle free humidity like a 10-15 quart....so....hope this helps you decide...

This was exactly what I wanted. Very heavy duty, true cast iron, great for humidifying a room with a wood stove. I love it
