2.0 out of 5 stars solar light, April 18, 2008
This review is from: Solar Patriot Light (Kitchen)
Light does not put out like it advertises. I had to move it nearly all the way up the pole for it to shed light on the flag.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money like I did., December 5, 2008

I fly the American Flag nearly 365 days of the year and only take it down to replace it or during severe wind or weather. That being the case, flag etiquette states that "The American Flag must be lit by a light when flown at night." Not wanting to hire an electrician to run power to my flag pole, and since stretching an extension cord across the yard was not an option, this looked like the perfect solution. Boy was I wrong and truly disappointed by this product.

When it did work, the light only dimly illuminated the flag. To get decent lighting, one would have to install it near the top of the pole, right below the flag, which in turn would interfere with the operation of the pulleys and rope. In addition, the solar battery only lasts a short period of time and not through the entire night. As time wears on the light becomes dimmer, and dimmer, and a few hours later the flag is left in the dark.

Finally, the biggest drawback to this product is the fact that it attach's directly to the flag pole itself and is subject to the stresses of the pole's motion. When the wind gusts, the pole moves and at times that movement can be quite substantial. This in turn shakes the light and all its components. The light seems sturdy by design but has its weak points, like the small sized wire that attach's the solar panel to the light fixture for instance. Every time the pole moves, the light moves, and this takes its toll on the fixture. My patriot light only lasted 6 months.

Bottom line, it's a pretty good idea and seems functional but the design needs to be sturdier and the light needs to be much brighter. Until then, your money would be better spent on a regular solar spotlight to sit at the bottom of your flag pole.

I was very dissapointed in this light! I don't suggest anyone to purchase this. It was a gift for my pow father's flag. Does not shine bright at all.
