Worm Farm,
By
This review is from: WormVue Wonders (Toy)
This worm farm was interesting put together, but be warned it is extremely flimsy. It is made from styroam and plastic and is not very portable. The mail-in certificate for worms as advertised is misleading - you have to pay additional money to get a kit. It is cheaper to go to a bait store and buy nightcrawlers to put in the container. This lasted about a month at my house and I ended up tossing it in the garbage. Very cheaply made and not worth what you pay for it. You could make your own.

I purchased this item for my 5-year old nephew. I recently learned that his mother had to send [additional money] to the company in order to receive the worms and the dirt!! Very disappointing. Nothing like getting a birthday present and then being forced to pay for it! What could my sister-in-law say to her teary-eyed 5-year old who wanted his worms? I intend to write to the manufacuturer and share my story with them. Moral: Send a check when you send this gift to anyone!

I purchased this for my 5yr. old grandson for Christmas last year and he was thrilled with it. By the end of the day he could label all parts of a worm and was studying the included booklet with great interest. The worms were ordered and arrived alive and well. After 5 months, however, none of the worms had yet become visible. Thinking they were dead, his mother convinced him to empty the container. There were the worms, in perfect health! He released them to the backyard garden and goes to visit them daily. I was very disappointed with this purchase.

We are having a blast with our Worm Vue Wonders. I was a bit worried at first that the worms would escape but they are securely held in the unit. It's well designed so that you can always see worms when you pull up a black shield that keeps out the light. We received our worms within two weeks like it said on the box. It comes with a booklet that has information and experiments. There is also a poster of worm anatomy and facts, plus seeds and a container for growing tomatoes with the composted soil. Really you get a lot in this kit. Our kids are really into experiments and such so this kind of thing is great for them.

Worms not visible!,
This review is from: WormVue Wonders (Toy)
The children's area of our museum has this toy. They keep healthy worms in it at all times (I asked). However, we have yet to see a single worm and we check every time we go (we've been doing this for over 2 years). The worms never bore near the sides.
The toy is also cheaply made, the area in the picture you see that looks like rock is styrofoam. It isn't very big. And the sides scratch easily. The dark covers on either side are cheap cardboard and don't last long either. Our museum attendants have had to replace them with thick black cardboard pieces. Even with the thicker, darker covers against the plastic sides, the worms won't dig near the sides. This toy is a good concept, but poorly done and a total waste of money.

Great science toy to view the life of worms- if used right!,
This review is from: WormVue Wonders (Toy)
I have bought several of these, using them at a preschool and now for a fifth grade class. You can see the worms up close - if you understand how and have patience! You must wait for your worm order to arrive (or dig your own, though they may not thrive for more than a few weeks because there are MANY types of worms and not all are suited to this farm.) WORMS LIKE THE DARK. If you leave the clear sides open to light, the worms burrow to the inside to hide. You must use the black light shields. When you are ready to view the worms, slide the shields out and the worms are right there! They will slither away within about ten minutes, needing a few hours of darkness to return to the sides. This set comes with an experiment book full of good ideas and a diagram of a worm's anatomy. I do not recommend transporting the worm farm much when it is full, but it is the best way I have found to study worms (unless you try worm composting -- Great fun!)

I hated and feared worms when I was growing up. Who knew how important these hard working critters were for helping to make soil fertile for gardens? I didn't know until information about organic gardening became commonplace. I have made it my mission to share this knowledge with my preschoolers; I also strive to eliminate needless fears of these harmless creatures. I was not impressed with the durability of the kit when I first received it. But the lightness of the styrofoam and the shatter-proof windows make the house easy to set up, carry around the classroom while doing experiments or making observations, and cleaning up when we are done with the worms. When you send for the worms, the kit provides you with all you need to create the perfect habitat for the worms. For the past 5 years, my students have helped me set the whole habitat up. Then we learn all about the parts of the worms, what they digest, and what they do to help us in the garden. By the end of the unit, my students are excitedly showing their parents the worms, fearlessly digging them out for display. So don't let the simplicity of the worm vue wonder fool you. You can have a blast with it.

Not only do you have to give them more money to fill the the cheaply made worm viewer, they still don't provide you with everything you need to fill it up. Turns out I need 4" of shredded newspaper "firmly pressed into the bottom of the unit". Great, after waiting weeks for the worms and filler, now I have to shred a lot of newspaper. An instruction booklet didn't come with the worms, but the manuf did respond quickly to my email. Overall, this is expenesive for what you get, certainly not designed or made well. It's been a big disappointment. (The ladybugs and butterfly kits are much better--and from different manufacturers.)

We have compost worms in our outdoor composter & I couldn't wait to get this product. The kids love having a "worm's eye view" of our friends at work.
