About the Author

Jonathan Sapir has over 30 years experience helping clients leverage information technology to build their business. After starting out as a system engineer for IBM, Jonathan built a successful mid-size consulting firm in Chicago in the 1990's, then grew a software product development company which was acquired in 2007. Returning to consulting, Jonathan started a new company, SilverTree Systems, Inc., to help companies migrate to the Cloud. Jonathan has previously written two well-received books: Igniting the Phoenix: A New vision for IT in 2003, which foretold many of the ideas that have become reality, especially in the areas of enterprise social software, cloud computing, and self-service application development; and Power in the Cloud: Using Cloud Computing to build information systems at the edge of chaos in 2008, which looked at building information systems in the context of complex adaptive systems theory.

"I'm an avid follower of Jonathan's thoughts and body of work. When starting down the current path of Web 2.0 three years ago, Jonathan's book & interviews captured exactly what is now transpiring in terms of business transformation. I have quoted Jonathan on many, many occasions; his insights into understanding emerging key business issues both from the IT perspective and the line-of-business have been truly visionary." - Rod Smith, IBM VP Emerging Technologies

"Jon is a wonderfully talented, exceptionally creative, and forward-thinking luminary who can add significant value to any organization and leap-frog their thinking. Jon has proven time and again that he can think things through, not only at a practical level, but also at a level of fore-thought that few venture." - Ron Schmelzer, Senior Analyst, Zapthink

I just wanted to comment that I had a chance to look at an early version of this, and it's a terrific read not only for companies that are actively considering using Force.com, but for anyone who wants to understand the dynamics of modern utility computing resources crossed with ubiquitous Internet access and easily-accessible apps. It's one of the best primers I have seen explaining the general confluence of these trends and how they are creating a sea change in the way business will have to do IT in the future.

While many of us can just marvel at the technological innovations of the past few years, CEO's CTO's and CIO's need to try and predict how to best make sure that their business are ready for the sea change. Jonathan's book gives the best guide to how the rise of the cloud and force.com with it allows companies to see the path to innovation without gutting their business. There is $224 Billion dollars spent annually on the enterprise computing sector in the US, mobile has began its dominating rise and a whole new generation of workers technically expect connectivity in the work place. Jonathan covers these topics and provides case studies and real world advice on how to mange the transition from Excel, Access and Lotus Notes to force.com. From working within a secure and private environment to how to manage change from the perspective of the IT department, Unleash the power of Force.com is a book that every business must read if it wants to take advantage of the new digital economy.

If you want to read generalizations about IT, business and Millennials and the benefits of the Cloud, read this book. If you want to understand the force.com platform, find something else to read. The first third of the book is full of random quotes and common problems issues that every business faces, I.e. lots of business users using spreadsheets and msaccess because IT can't deliver solutions they need. It's kind of a justification as to why you'd want to consider the cloud and PaaS.

But, if you're like me, you're past the point of needing to be convinced that force.com is a good idea, and you are more interested in learning approaches to "Unleash the Power of force.com" Maybe this happens somewhere later in the book, but based on the first third, I didn't have very high expectations and didn't want to invest any more time.

Unleash the Power of force.com " is a clear and easy to understand guide directed at a broad audience of business and technical leaders. The book puts meat on Gartner's prediction that by 2014 more than 25% of new business systems will be written by citizen developers. It describes why this is inevitable, and what organizations need to do to make this happen as smoothly and effectively as possible. This is unchartered territory, and the book will act as an illuminating guide for those forward-thinking enough to take the plunge. Highly recommended.
