3.0 out of 5 stars Dogs Don't Write Poetry
Poets do. Some of them (Andrew Hudgins, Mark Doty) seem to have used their powers of observation to try to understand their dog's psyches a little bit. Others (Rick Bass, Honor Moore) have no clue; they're too busy writing Poetry.

As a collection this one is typically uneven, representing the variety of human reaction rather than the steadfastness of Dog...

I fell in love with this book from the moment I read the first dog, er ... poet. I have raved about this collection ever since. What can I say? Even cat-people love it. It's true! I'm not lying! Really! A young school-teacher friend of mine has decided to use these poems to inspire her students to write poems from their own pets' point of view ... just so the kids will feel safer about writing poems. If the pet writes the poem, then it doesn't matter if people laugh at the poem; the pet won't mind. And that way, the pet can just go ahead and write all the poems (s)he wants to ... no matter what. Thank the Big Dog for bringing this back into print!

5.0 out of 5 stars Any human who loves dogs will love this book!, October 12, 1999
I was fully prepared to like this book, but I was quite unprepared for it to be as altogether wonderful and extraordinary as it is. These poems are brilliant, insightful, intuitive, heartbreaking and hilarious. I laughed and cried, reading and re-reading and savoring every delicious word. The picture of tiny little Sadie sitting with her Mama, the poignant beauty of the "Memento Mori" section, the hilarity of the paeans by several of the dogs to their food.... it's impossible to choose a favorite. I have called friends to read sections and entire poems to them, and they have all been as moved and delighted as I. What a joy to learn that such sensitive and talented artists are as in love with their dogs as all the rest of us, but also able to articulate that love so beautifully. This is great poetry and great literature and a delight to all the senses. "Unleashed!" will be under many of my friends' Christmas trees this year. All the poets and both the editors deserve tremendous credit. This is a winner. Paws up!

5.0 out of 5 stars woof. WOOF!, October 16, 2003

I had a poetry teacher once who said some poets were better than others. I argued that "better" was subjective. Now I know I was wrong. There are poets that are better than others. They're dogs!

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute joy, May 5, 2000
I was lucky enough to come across this book when I was getting ready to attend the Sewanee Young Writers' Conference where many of the selected dogs' owners were teaching. The only thing better than reading the poems to myself (or my dog, who also loved it) was hearing the writer's recite these love poems. Honestly, there isn't a bad one in the "litter": each poem will leave you with a smile or a wagging tail. A particular favorite is Lynda Barry's Bob Barker's "I Love My Master." I've read this to many people and it always takes quite a while for the laughter to subside. I would say this book is for everyone who likes poetry, but it is an absolute must-have for dog lovers!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally ... dog poetry that isn't drippy, August 26, 2004
"Unleashed" works if you've ever wished for more poems (not verse) about dogs. From prose poems to free verse to sonnets to some more sophisticated forms of poetry(that is, I don't know what to call them!), this book fills that void. And the dogs' voices are authentic, whether they're talking about barfing, spaying, dying, retrieving, or eating.
Many thanks to Amy Hempel and Jim Shepard for editing this collection. I'm going to see if some of these writers are as good as their mutts.

Why shouldn't a writer help a dog find his voice? Neither cutesy nor cloying, this collection of poems by writers' dogs is pretty great. Gives new meaning to the old-fashioned command, "Speak!" Definitely worth reading.

If you are a dog person, you need this collection. I was amazed at how eloquent and articulate these writers' dogs turned out to be ;-), but then again, with all of a writer's various books at their disposal, it's probably a byproduct of their surroundings.

As you read and reread (and savor) the poems in this collection, you will no doubt recognize your own furry friends, their moods, their joy, their fears, their laments. To read this collection is to see the world through the eyes of your dog.

This is a gem, and I have given copies as gifts to many people. You will treasure this book and when you pick it up to re-read a favorite poem you will remember all the dogs you have known and loved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Canine for the mind., August 2, 2008
If you like dogs and you have a brain and a soul then you will enjoy this collection of poetry. Some poems are a little cheesy but most evoke the true nature of dogs in a human world and our attempts to be kindred spirits. If you can read the 'Memento Mori' section with dry eyes then you're already dead.

Now, a book of cat poetry. That would be something, no?

Right, empty pages....

5.0 out of 5 stars Homer Bass made me cry, July 3, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Unleashed: Poems by Writers' Dogs (Hardcover)
Let's admit we've all credited dialogue to our dogs, and with great pleasure. It's a means of giving voice to the deep connection we share with our pets. For writers the next natural step is crediting poems to our dogs. And if you own a dog, you'll race through these with the same delectation.

The writers' obvious displacement of human emotion onto their dogs is laughable in poems like "Full Neurological Work-up" by Padgett Powell's dog Spode and "Rain" by Amy Hempel's dog Audie. But my personal favorite was The Odyssey by Rick Bass' dog Homer. I cried.
