Customer Reviews

Aside from the personally urgent message, the book is well written and very readable.

This book was one that I could read over and over so that I am reminded of the importance of taking risks and letting God be in control of my life and my heart.

I'm not trying to say that we can't sometimes do good things, like family vacations and go to college.

I was hesitant about this book when I noticed the author referred to following Jesus as "the Barbarian Way". I thought "here we go, gimmicky Christianity". I was wrong. This book appears to be a sequel to another book by McManus titled "the Barbarian Way", but you do not need to read that title to enjoy and benefit from this one. The Barbarian Way that he refers to is undiluted Christian commitment. Following Jesus as He commanded us to, even when, and especially when, the going gets tough. I can highly recommend this book.

I have been praying for God to show me why my once burning heart for him has grown so dull. This book held the answer. I have become too civilized and traded my raw, on fire love for Christ for a list of volunteer commitments, church attendance and Christian do's and don'ts. In the comming months my kids and I will be rediscovering what it means to live a life of faith, risk and adventure. I will reread this book any time I need to be reminded of the raw beauty that exists within a life for Christ!

This book relates the way Jesus lived his life to the way we out to live our lives when we profess ourselves as Christians and claim to follow Him. To sum up the book, Jesus never promised this following him would consist solely of sitting in church pews in pretty clothing. The author reiterates that the Christian path can be a hard, dangerous and surprising one- but that because we have Christ we have no need to fear it. Rather he suggests we embrace it.
I love the author's ideas and he writes with great passion. I believe, like the author, that we often put Christianity in a nice safe box and don't experience life to the fullest because we don't unleash our untamed faith. I very much want to live as a disciple, and not merely a Christian, to go where Christ calls me, no matter what the cost.
However, I did find flaws with this book. The authors style is somewhat disconnected. It's almost as if he published his first draft, without undergoing any editing process. He has passion, but likes finesse (much like me in the kitchen haha). I'm not sure that I would recommend this book because there are several other good books out there with a similar perspective-like anything by Mark Batterson. However, the passion behind this book could make it a faith changer. Overall, I think I have a fairly neutral opinion of this book (which is pretty rare).

This book challenges us to step out from behind the current, modern, American Christian life and return to one that is fully rooted in who Jesus is. The author does a good job using scripture and constantly points back to the saving work of Jesus.

Unleashed: Release the Untamed Faith Within
By Erwin Raphael McManus
This book was originally released as The Barbarian Way. Erwin McManus shares in the Introduction to this new release that he wrote the book because of his fearless daughter, who personifies the barbarian way for him. So he changed the name, in an attempt to reach a broader audience.
I appreciate the message of the book, however, it's not very well written. His examples are easy to follow, but don't really seem to connect to the Biblical points he's trying to make! I do like the overall idea that Christianity is not designed for sheepish, status-quo people, but rather for those who are willing to follow Jesus and his message with boldness of character and dedication! Overall, It's a good message, but not a very good delivery.

Thanks Thomas Nelson!

Unleashed, by Erwin McManus is:

A call to push-off apathy.

A command for action.

A push towards passion.

A warning against complacency.

Inaction is no longer tolerated; apathy and complacency are signs of spiritual death. Passion and love are tributes to God' using your uniqueness to further His kingdom; to transform your life into something you've never dreamed could happen. Your dreams and passions are worthy of pursuit when you're in love with God. Trust that inner voice that's telling you to do something crazy - it may be God guiding you to become his warrior. You are more effective by being yourself and being in love with God than you could ever be by pretending to enjoy your normal routine that secretly you loathe.

Unleashed is much like McManus' other books: a plea to stop living to merely get by, but to thrive by paying attention to the little opportunities that God places into your life, whereby He will give you bigger and more thrilling/terrifying opportunities to serve and love Him.

Unleashed by the author of The Barbarian Way goes into further detail about living your life unbridled by the stigma of mucked down stagnant misapplied understanding of the power of the scriptures and how they apply to the world today. Unleash your faith in ways you never thought you could when you come to understand what you can do with it when it's properly understood and applied.
