Editorial Reviews

Review

"The authors are clearly having fun, packing in lots of tongue-in-cheek lupine references...[the] conclusion that leaves central mysteries unsolved will have readers howling for the next installment."-- Booklist

"Readers who prefer female leads who fight their own supernatural demons to those who just kiss them will like Katelyn’s ultimately personal involvement in the secret werewolf community of Wolf Springs, AR." -- School Library Journal

3.0 out of 5 stars Not unleashed yet. January 19, 2012
Format:Hardcover
This was an exceptionally slow and uneventful first book. * minor spoilers, but nothing that important*

Nothing happened until over 200 pages of reading a book about people talking and then everything went downhill as she forces herself to keep it a secret from everyone. I think the key word for this book was "secret". I was tempted to skip ahead, but didn't because SOMETHING had to happen... maybe it was just on the next page. I hate when I'm wrong.

The next attention grabbing event doesn't occur until 150 pages later. The most interesting incident that happens in the book, the part the entire book is building up toward finally happens and it might as well not have happened because it was given about 2 paragraphs and then it's back to the crazy talk. The cover and name of this book makes it quite obvious what the book is about, and it's nothing but a blip in this first book. The last sentence of the book, about 30 pages later made me want to scream ( I didn't). In this one last sentence the authors finally got it together enough to make waiting for the next book difficult.

I have to point out that I did read this book in one night, although my mind did stray from the words sometimes. I was so embarrassed by the way people were treating Kat. Kissing her and then yelling at her in the next breath. She has a sleep over with her "best" friend, and that was even awkward to read. Even her best friend from California suddenly seems to give up on their friendship. I stopped reading halfway through the book for a bit because I was so irritated with the characters and all their SECRETS. This book is filled with a lot of talking, all everyone does is talk. But not really talk. It's hard to talk when everything is a secret. Worse yet, yes it does get worse, the main characters all seemed to rate someplace on the crazy scale. They are so painfully off balance that I have come to the conclusion that someone needed to dump some psychiatric medication into the water supply.

Also, why did the authors introduce her gymnastic and ballet interests? It really seems to have no place in the remainder of the book, except to make note of her good flexibility in gym class while stretching. I am giving this book 3 stars because somehow the authors made me read the entire book, even though I was trying not to cringe at certain parts. The last sentence is the redeeming part of the story and adding a star, giving me hope for book two.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book One of the Wolf Springs Chronicles November 3, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
The writing duo Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguié are back again with another young adult series. This time, the setting is a rural town located in the Ozark Mountains; well, that's where Katelyn McBride ends up after her mother dies in a fire. The whole situation is sad. Katelyn blames herself for her mother's death. She's still in shock over the loss when she moves from Los Angeles to Wolf Springs. Between some of the creepy townsfolk and the eerie woods, I could almost hear banjos playing in the background. This story definitely has the creepy-factor going for it.

Complain if you will that the plot isn't original or some of the characters are stereotypical--I simply didn't care. From the get-go, this young adult werewolf story had me hooked. By the description, I thought there'd be more romance. There's the beginnings of a love triangle brewing, but this story was more about the drama of moving in with a grandfather she doesn't know very well and trying to fit in. It was also about trying to stay alive, because a killer is on the loose. I have a feeling there will be more romance in the future installments.

Bottom line, I can't wait to read book two. This is my first book by Nancy Holder and Debbie Viguié. I enjoyed it so much, I'd like to try another series while waiting for book two of the Wolf Springs Chronicles to come out. I do want to warn potential readers of the cliffhanger ending. It wasn't harsh, but there's one all the same.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite in an over saturated genre May 22, 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
I'm actually one of the few who didn't fully enjoy reading this book. I feel like the YA genre is so saturated in angels, vampires and werewolves that if you're going to read one, it needs to be different and exciting. Many readers will love this book because it's a short ride over from the currently popular book and movie franchise from Meyer. A heroine moves from a sunny city to a forest, it's a small town so everyone knows about the new girl, she corrects people that her name isn't Katelyn (Isabella) but Kat (Bella), and there's a love triangle. I honestly hate, hate, hate comparing books to Meyer's books, but this one had a lot of similarities. So if you're a fan then I urge you to pick up Unleashed because it will appeal to you.

I also had a hard time getting into the book because of Katelyn herself. I don't understand why the author comments about her interests in gymnastics and dance at the beginning if they aren't mentioned or a part of anything throughout the rest of the book. (I'm a ballerina and really was looking forward to Katelyn maybe finding a new studio if she was so good and wanted to be in the big leagues. She also annoyingly talks to herself with dumb comments. Like when she's introduced to Trick and she wonders if that's his name or a trick... even though she was introduced to him as such, and then down the page asks again about his name. On the same chapter when she's talking about Trick's ethnicity I want to roll my eyes, she goes from not Caucasian, to dark to Native American to Russian and the inner monologue makes her sound like she's empty upstairs. I think perhaps I'm too old for this book, but it wasn't horrible. So I give it three stars knowing I'll probably never read the second book, but that this will appeal to a good chunk of YA paranormal romance readers out there.
