From the Inside Flap

While CIOs and IT leaders have faced challenges never seen in the history of their profession over the past few years, they've also been responsible for producing an awareness throughout their organizations that technology really can be a game-changer. From a business leader's perspective, market forces such as globalization, consumerization, and increasingly savvy consumers have turned technology into a key differentiator as companies seek to expand into new markets and create a competitive advantage.

Written for CIOs and IT managers, Unleashing the Power of IT is designed for you to immediately begin using the best practices and proven strategies found within this book. Rather than writing from a 30,000-foot level, author Dan Roberts has combined big-picture context with specific advice you can use in your next planning session, staff meeting, or client interaction. Based on proven approaches that generate results, this practical and applicable book takes a close look at:

  • Creating your twenty-first-century workforce and culture

  • Transforming your IT team

  • Building a customer-centric IT culture

  • Moving from order takers to consultative business partners

  • Negotiating agreements while strengthening relationships

  • Managing the art and science of projects

  • Sharpening your political savvy

  • Marketing IT's value

Cutthroat competition is forcing continuous innovation, and government regulations are driving constant introspection—all fueled by technology. Interact with customers through online communities. Use social media to enhance customer loyalty. Find new product and service innovations. Do it all with the invaluable guidance and wellspring of vital information found in Unleashing the Power of IT.

From the Back Cover

Praise for Unleashing the Power of IT

"Ouellette & Associates has done an excellent job outlining the critical elements of a collaborative IT environment and pointing out the steps IT professionals can take to become strategic business partners. Unleashing the Power of IT: Bringing People, Business and Technology Together offers keen insight into ways we can maximize our skills to create value for businesses. The advice in the book is practical and, most important, actionable."—Barbara Koster, Senior Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Prudential Financial, Inc.

"O&A continues to lay down the foundation for the future. Just like they have been doing for over twenty-five years, O&A has captured the pulse of the industry. Their vision in defining the transformation of IT is exactly where we all should be focused. The game has changed, and O&A recognizes the need to transform ourselves into a new set of skills that are in tune with our organizations."—Alan Guibord, Founder, The Advisory Council

"This book is concise and readable. More importantly, it provides insights and examples to which any IT leader can relate. Anyone that wants to get better, and make their organization better, will find ideas and action plans in this book."—Don Imholz, CIO, Centene Corporation

"During my years as CIO, I have learned that the role is quite complex and success requires close attention to a very broad range of responsibilities. O&A's new book provides a practical, thought-provoking road map for those IT leaders who are striving for organizational excellence. Bringing people, business, and technology together is the theme of the book and serves as a constant reminder of the balance required by the transformational leader. I highly recommend that IT leaders read and then re-read this book."—Don Desiderato, Principal, Novarica Insurance Practice

In "Unleashing the Power of IT", Dan Roberts has taken a direct path to assist those who are caught up in the fog of IT advancement within a company or organization. He applies some change management with select "war stories" of what did/could go right or wrong.
This isn't technical in the "technology" sense, but more of a management style or "tool" that can help one get to where they want to go . . . and have some help (from the book and from your staff) to get there. With the CIO role undergoing a slow constant shift to managing parts AND people, this should find a permanent place on your bookcase. IT should be very near your chair as you'll be reaching for it regularly.
It's good to know that Mr. Roberts is following this up with his new book, "Confessions of a Successful CIO"!! I strongly urge you to have both of these tools in your management toolbox!

Having been a CIO for over 12 years now, and in Information Technology for over 30 years, I've seen just about every approach to getting it right, both good and bad. Dan's book "Unleashing the Power of IT" is spot on. He understands the need for an IT department to adapt and become truly engaged with the business it belongs to, and can explain how through the consultative approach. Anywhere you look in the book, from Project Management, to Negotiation, to Vendor Relationships, you see the common thread of people and communication. As I've heard Dan say, it's the "human side of technology". This is not a new fad, and will always be relevant. The book brings home the concept with practical, actionable steps. I consider it the survival guide for the IT department that wants to be the service provider of choice.

This book is a must read for anyone in IT, from line staff to the highest levels of management. Roberts is very forward-looking and tackles the full range of IT disciplines (with a strong focus on the business relationship) including politics, managing change, selecting vendors, marketing, etc... The book is very much based in reality, with little room for useless theory. It's clear that Roberts has been in the "business" of IT for quite some time.

If you are looking for a guide on how to manage or work in IT that navigates the very real changes going on in this exciting field, then this book is for you.

Absolute must for anyone looking to become the IT professional of tomorrow (albeit one that is required today).
Judicious IT leaders and professionals realize that there is a need in IT for more than certifications, degrees and newer software to truly bring out the benefits of IT systems and the teams of people that provide it.
This book highlights the various areas that IT departments and leaders would encounter, the expectations other's have of them and their overall responsibility to grow the business as well as themselves.
Anyone looking to create that spark of fantastic customer service hidden behind all those layers of switches and firewalls will enjoy the insights offered by this book.
IT leaders looking to establish ways in which they can help their staff members grow holistically to help their staff's professional and personal growth will find this book extremely useful too.

This is the book for those of you striving to be an integral and respected member of your organization's top decision-making team.

I've been in the learning/training industry for over 25 years, focused on the business of learning. And for over two and a half decades I have been passionately bemoaning to my fellow providers and training clients that as critical as people and learning are to an organization's success (we've advanced to being a global knowledge economy, haven't we?), learning, development, and HR in general usually are not at the critical decision-making and strategy-setting meetings, reflecting the low value-add of their functions as perceived by upper management. Why? Because they haven't learned how to operate and position themselves as critical to the organization. Unleashing the Power of IT can be used not only by IT but also by learning and HR as the roadmap for becoming a key competitive differentiator for the organization.

The book is an excellent pragmatic how-to guide. Each chapter focuses on a topic aimed at unleashing IT's power i.e., evolving in to the role of consultant, marketing IT's value, with each chapter ending with a top ten list of actions you can take to make it happen in your organization.

Although this book is of great value to the IT profession and written to them, I'm using this book with my learning and HR peers to show them "this is what we need to do!"
