About the Author

Elvin G. Miali, Police Chief - retired, has 37 years of Law Enforcement experience including 17 years as Chief Police. Chief Miali began his career in the city of San Gabriel, California. He worked his way through the ranks from Patrolman, Detective, Detective Sergeant, Lieutenant Watch Commander, Lt. in charge of Detectives and then Captain in charge of operations. During this time he was also the department polygraph examiner and was the Sergeant in charge of Internal Affairs investigations. In 1986 he was selected to be Chief of Police in Fountain Valley, CA. He has been involved in numerous promotional exams; sitting on both sides of the table as well as developing various testing programs. He has taken these experiences, good and bad and incorporated them into a positive experience. He has observed how these testing processes can cause a great amount of stress on the candidate and he knows there are many ways to reduce that stress and to better understand this process. That is why he wrote his book, "Unless You're the Lead Dog the Scenery Never Changes." He will give you A Police Chief's insight on how to properly prepare for promotional exams and maintain a positive outlook throughout your journey.

More About the Author

Born in 1945 in Rosemead California. Chief Miali attended Don Bosco Technical High School, which is an all boys school and had college prep classes along with Automotive shop as a trade. While at Pasadena City College he accidentally entered an "Introduction to Law Enforcement" class taught by a retired FBI agent named John L. Sullivan. He found the class extremely interesting and Law Enforcement seemed a much better job then his current employment at the time of driving a pottery truck, so he switched majors from Business to Police Science and when he turned 21 in 1967, he was accepted to the San Gabriel Police Department, where he advanced to the rank of Captain. In 1986 Chief Miali accepted a position as Chief of Police with the city of Fountain Valley, in Orange County Ca. and after 17 years as their Chief he retired in 2003. During his 37 years in Law Enforcement he observed that a lot of candidates testing for promotional exams experienced difficulty properly preparing for the process so he wrote his book, "Unless You're the Lead Dog the Scenery Never Changes," to assist officers during these stressful times. Chief Miali also does one on one consultations to help make the candidate's life a little easier while preparing for their future careers. He teaches at a local Police Academy. When not involved in mentoring and teaching, Chief Miali enjoys his second passion of woodworking.
