Book Description

October 1, 1999 Mainstream Sport
Unlicensed fighting is the raw flipside of boxing. A few men make what they call easy money, but for many the unlicensed game becomes a nightmare of pain and fear. This book shares the lives and times of these men, from John Barnwell, a veteran of 30 years of brutal contests around the world, to the undefeated Billy Heaney, the street-fighting champion called "The Galway Bull."

4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging study of the hidden side of boxing & boxers., November 5, 1999

Full of intriguing tales and characters, "Unlicensed" is a great read for anyone interested in boxing... and for those who aren't, really. More than a study of boxing, it is a study of the men who look to it for direction. Primarily focused on England's underground boxing scene (but with peeks into Vegas, Tyson, and the indomitable Don King), this book takes the reader from pub to pub to warehouses and boxing clubs where Hotten meets with these boxers: some brutal, animalistic... and surprisingly likeable. A candid, colorful, and often funny (in its own way) glimpse of this somehow intimate world and its events. A really good read.
