Book Description

July 24, 2000
Along with General Claire Chennault's "Flying Tigers," the men and planes of the 490th Bomb Squadron became famous as the "Burma Bridge Busters." From late 1942 to the end of the war, their incredible feats of low-level bombing and strafing of Japanese-held bridges, airfields, and troop facilities in occupied Burma hindered the Japanese advance in Asia, and provided critical air support for the allies fighting on the ground. The author's uncle, a radioman/waist gunner in the 490th, was killed on a mission in the waning days of the war. This book is both a search for his memory, and a tribute to the squadron in which he proudly served and sacrificed his lifethe "Burma Bridge Busters."The author was born and raised in Chicago. In addition to writing and traveling, he is an avid fisherman, hunter, and scuba diver. He has published Seasons of Harvest, a three-volume historical novel, and is at work on a second novel titled Cumberland Road. This book is his first nonfiction work.

5.0 out of 5 stars A emotional journey back thru time!, November 11, 2000

Jim Vesely presents an interesting treatment of the life of American aircrews and support personnel by combining operational reports, veteran naratives and some letters from his uncle Sgt Adolph 'Otsie' Malovich, who was killed-in-action while serving his country, his family and his comrades. Mr. Vesely shares his heart with the reader, explaining his search to know more about the uncle he barely knew, and what Otsie's time might have been like while he was part of the 'Burma Bridge Busters', 490th Bomb Squadron. The author beautifully highlights how this group of men, serving in one of the remotest actions of the war, performed with gallantry, dignity and dedication. A must read for anyone interested in American participation in the China-Burma-India theater!

This book is very good in that after reading it, you get a good idea about what the WWII B-25 bomber crews experienced while they were on their missions and what when on while they were back at their base waiting for the next mission.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good read on a little-discussed theater of operations, May 31, 2010

This book does a good job of putting you in the place of the soldiers who served with the Burma Bridge Busters. This book is written in a similar style to "Flags of Our Fathers", switching between life at home before the war, during training, and in-theatre. I really appreciate this because my father served with this unit during WW2, but died before I was old enough to discuss it with him. This book helps me feel like I have at least a little more understanding of his experience. My thanks to the author for doing such a good job and helping bring to light a much overlooked theater of operations.
