Book Description

Unlikely Friendships is a phenomenon.  A book with its compelling message of hope and friendship and differences overcome. Temple Grandin called it “. . . amazing. It shows the power of friendship.”

Now Unlikely Friendships is rewritten for younger readers: Unlikely Friendships for Kids, a series of hardcover chapter books for children, ages seven and up. Here are three collections each with five of the clearest, most interesting stories from the original book, like the monkey and the dove or the leopard and the cow. Chapter books give young readers a strong sense of accomplishment, and these heartwarming animal stories, with their incredible photographs and inexplicable mysteries of attraction, their focus on friendship, love, and the ways that creatures of all different species can find common bonds of affection, will keep kids turning the pages to find out about the unusual ways animals help each other and discover the love of new friends.

Each is a perfect gift for young animal lovers, and a lovely subject to help kids get reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Heartwarming August 24, 2012
Part of a three-book series, Unlikely Friendships for Kids: The Dog and the Piglet and Four Other True Stories of Animal Friendships is both heartwarming and informative. It's the kind of book that while reading you find yourself expressing a series of audible, "awwws" because it's just that darling. Author Jennifer S. Holland is a science writer, who while scuba diving in Australia's Great Barrier Reef, discovered a fish swimming with a very different species of fish, an unlikely pair. This inspired her to seek out more stories about other animals from different species who became unlikely friends.

The photos in the book are so cute, your kids will love them. They will read five unique true stories about: a large dog and piglet from Germany; an orangutan and a cat who lived in a zoo; a hippo and a goat; a standard poodle and a white-tailed deer; and an iguana and a cat from NY City. Each story is educational and lets readers into the hearts of the creatures featured in each story.

What is great about this book is that it teaches kids we don't have to be alike to get along and that friendships, when they work well, don't really need a rhyme or reason. They just work, and it's a beautiful thing. They also learn a little bit about the habits of each animal and there's a nice list of different species in the back of the book as well as a word and phrase list.

Any book that teaches kids compassion, that they can get along with others and be open to branch out into unknown territories is a wonderful book. I recommend checking out the other two titles in this series. What a lovely gift this set would make!

5.0 out of 5 stars Daughter loves it June 13, 2012
My daughter is an animal lover, and I knew she would love this book. She's an 8 year old and it's right at her reading level, with photos to hold her attention. It's the perfect thing to keep her reading over summer vacation, and there's even a little glossary in the back for help with unfamiliar words, and a list of animals from the stories with quick info. If you have a kid 7 and up who loves animals, and you want to keep them reading and learning, this is a great book for sneaking it in! I will definitely buy the other two in the set.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good early reader, perfect for young animal lovers August 10, 2012
By Lisa
A good early reader, perfect for young animal lovers. Recommended!

This book is a collection of 5 stories of animal friendships, designed to appeal to kids in the 6-10 age range. In terms of reading level, it's comparable to an early chapter book -- a bit harder than Frog and Toad, but only a bit. Each story is quite short (4-10 pages), there's a fair amount of white space on each page, and there are lots of pictures.

Although many of the animals featured started out in unfortunate circumstances, nothing bad happens to any of them in these stories. They are rescued and cared for, and then find true friendship and live cuddly ever after. The pictures will definitely induce "Awww"s!

(Note: I received a free copy of this book from the publisher at an American Library Association Annual Conference. I was not required to write a positive review. Thank you, Workman!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Unlikely Friendships August 10, 2013

The more people who read this amazing book, the more you will want to buy her four book series for children, as well as two new books coming out soon. Watch for "Unlikely Love" coming up next. I love animals but, I love Jennifer Holland even more. She took me to The San Diego Zoo with a group of experts at the various animal sections that Jenny wanted to watch. We fed the giraffes and I saw my first Panda...the zoo has four of them. The San Diego Zoo is so up-to-date and maintained to the highest standards possible. They even built a very high screened in path for the Giraffes' who could then walk down this path as they were having scans, blood pressure, growth patterns and a number of other things to examine their health in general. I was overwhelmed. Jennifer's books are as unbelievable as my zoo experience. Unlikely Loves, which will come out next. You will have you oohing, smiling and laughing and learning all at the same time. I wrote this review because Jennifer Holland is so gifted as a writer and is my niece as well.Unlikely Friendships: 47 Remarkable Stories from the Animal Kingdom
