The Best Jimmy Cliff Early Album,
By Ping Z (New York, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Unlimited (Audio CD)
To me this is his best album because the lyrics have the strongest message (similar to "Stuggling Man") and the music maintaint the "root reggae" arrangement similar to his earlier output before late 70s and into 80s when his records tried to appease wider audiance by satinize/sweeten instrumental accompanation...Cliff's voice on this album expresses his emotion and ernest fully. The instrumental accompanation is lean but flawless, be it slow numbers like "Price of Peace", "I See the Light" or uptempo tunes like "Black Queen" and "Rip-off", it sounds just perfect. My personal favorite on the album is "Poor Slave" which I don't think is collected on any of his later compilation albums or CDs. So, this is "THE" one Jimmy Cliff CD to get. You will not be disappointed.

Fantastic experience,
By Gary Selikow (Great Kush) - See all my reviews

Jimmy Cliff blaised the trail in reggae music later to be followed by Bob Marley, and I actually prefer Cliff's music to Marley's.This 1973 album is another showcase of his wonderful 1970's work. Icludes such gems as the determined Under the Sun, Moon and Stars, the funky Fundamental Reggae, the proud Black Queen, the anthemic Oh Jamaica, the On My Life and Born to Win, and the pacy Rip Off. Exploring Cliff's sunny and vibrant music is a fantastic experience.

The best unheard reggae album ever recorded,
By phil_specterd_resurrected "phil_specterd_resu... (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Unlimited (Audio CD)
This album captures the purest and most beautiful Jamaican reggae sound as Cliff writes and sings and plays reggae back to the empire. Cliff's _Unlimited_ now seems completely fresh, authentic, and relevant -- moreso now than it did then, when reviewers, who thought they knew reggae from the few songs they had already heard from Cliff and others, condemned it as too political(!) on the one hand and as too listenable on the other. Now, _Unlimited_ seems to grow in historical and contemporary relevance. It sounds at once sweeter and more politically clear headed in its understanding of global politics than Marley's admittedly thrilling and touching revolutionary rasta chants. Cliff is no less thrilling and no less revolutionary. If you buy this album, you will listen to it over and over, and yet you will sink deeper and deeper under its effortless spell. I love Bob Marley and other reggae and ska artists of all kinds, but this is my favorite reggae album. It's a cult classic.
