Book Description

Supplementing existing textbooks with exercises that allow practice in description, classification, subject analysis, and MARC 21, this workbook pinpoints problem areas that arise in the cataloging of a wide variety of materials in public, school, special, and academic library settings. Real title pages and other necessary materials are used throughout. AACR2 rule numbers are included, as well as questions for consideration. MARC records are provided for some 50 of 150 exercises. The book companion Web site (http://www.lu.com/workbook) has a section for students and a password protected section for instructors who adopt the book for courses. The instructor's Web site includes MARC records for all exercises. This book will appeal to cataloging students as necessary practice for sharpening their skills, as well as to beginning catalogers in the large library environment. It will be a valuable addition as individual study material and for in-house training of catalogers.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book of cataloging examples is best suited for, and was intended as a supplement for, a textbook in a cataloging course. Examples are an invaluable source for teaching library science students how to catalog different sources. The cataloging course I took in graduate school had a similar workbook of examples gathered from the professor's everyday work in a large public library. This book would have saved my professor several hours of compiling, reviewing, and copying that information for class each semester."

4.0 out of 5 stars catalogue this!, October 15, 2008
By
This review is from: Unlocking the Mysteries of Cataloging: A Workbook of Examples (Library & Information Science Text Series) (Paperback)
This cataloguing (so sue me, I'm Canadian, that's how we spell it) workbook contains a couple of hundred exercises for people studying library cataloguing. A wide range of mostly good examples, some of which are well known, with a bonus of AACR2 references applicable for each entry. The book suffers from some typos, which are anathema in this field, and a hefty price tag for what is essentially a book of lists. However, if you have to have it you're caught in the textbook trap anyway.

3.0 out of 5 stars book for library science class, June 30, 2006
This review is from: Unlocking the Mysteries of Cataloging: A Workbook of Examples (Library & Information Science Text Series) (Paperback)
I ordered this book for a library science course, but the university provided the books for all students, so it wasn't needed. The black and white photos were difficult to read with fuzzy images and very small print. It would be helpful to someone who needed to practice cataloging skills outside the classroom.
