This review is from: Unlocking the Mysteries of Creation: The Explorer's Guide to the Awesome Works of God (Hardcover)
UNLOCKING THE MYSTERIES OF CREATION is a visually stunning book that is divided into four different sections. The first section of the book talks about the creation, what nature tells us about the creation, how the Great Flood fits into science, and the unreliability of radiocarbon dating. The second section talks about evolution and the flaws in the theory of evolution. The third section is tightly connected with the second and illustrates "missing links" that were frauds, what happened to dinosaurs, and some often overlooked archeological finds that most people have never heard about. The fourth and final section of the book talks about ancient civilizations and how ancient man was probably more intelligent than modern man.

I found UNLOCKING THE MYSTERIES OF CREATION to be a very interesting book. Some of the research is a bit dated and I often wondered why the author didn't use more recent quotes and magazine and journal articles than the ones he did. Nevertheless, the book raises some interesting points and made me think about some things I never thought about before. For instance, I've always believed what I was taught in school about ancient man: they lived a long time ago and weren't as intelligent as us; knowlege has only really started to increase in recent times. However, UNLOCKING THE MYSTERIES OF CREATION made me evaluate what I had always believed. Maybe the ancients were much more intelligent than we "moderns" are. It still seems hard to believe, but I'm much more open to the idea now and can see that it is a possibility.

UNLOCKING THE MYSTERIES OF CREATION is not a flawless book. However, I think it is a good book for lay people to read. It does a good job of presenting points of view that many have been blinded to and never thought about. Plus, it's got some great pictures and illustrations. There are even a few funny pieces scattered throughout (the baloney detector, for instance: not only is it funny, but it's spelled wrong!). If you are a serious scientist, this book is not for you. However, if you are someone who is curious why your worldview always seems to collide with what you've learned in school, you might want to check this book out.

This book is a wonderful source of information. The author has definitely done a vast amount of research, and it is beautifully illustrated. It is a wonderful tool for gaining new insights and knowledge of how science supports the Bible as well as to understand the many holes in the evolution scheme. A chemist friend of mine the other day saw it on my coffee table and told me that he had the book and that his whole family loves it. And his teenage children are all top scholars in school. As can be seen from some of the reviews, it is not a very good tool for those who hate the thought of Creation as it is given in the Bible. The few seething reviews only strengthen the fact that this book presents solid arguments that are NOT out-dated. On the contrary, many new thoughts and scientific finds are presented - much newer than the same old and worn-out arguments hollered by evolutionists year after year. The example given in one negative review about the Law of Thermodynamics and the stars shows how shallow the evolutionist arguments are, as this reviewer totally takes Petersen out of context, as would be expected from one who cannot find any valid refutations. I love this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great research, well written, October 18, 2000

If you want a book about facts supporting creationism, this is the book for you. First, I'll let you know now that this book is actually designed for older children. But as an adult without children, I'd get this book again in a heartbeat. The benefit of that is well written, thoroughly researched, very interesting book without any of the trappings of ego that you will find in the pro evolution section. Plus, it is pretty easy to see where the evolution theory is wrong and far more interesting to see how science supports creation. Don't worry about the bad reviews from those supporting evolution. As a former evolutionist, I know that there is no such thing as "unbiased" science. Anyway, I hope that if you get this book it blesses you as much as it has me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by others, February 27, 2003
Most, if not all, of the negative reviewers below are merely parroting statements made by Answers in Genesis concerning this book. While Answers in Genesis performs many good works, they do not represent the positions of all creationists, as they seem to purport. Mr. Peterson, in this book, has done an excellent job of introducing many issues concerning creation science in a book directed at the layman. He also challenges us to think about some of the more controversial issues.

Answers in Genesis tends to steer away from controversial issues in the name of presenting a united front on creation science (with themselves as the gatekeeper, of course). That is hardly good science and one of the reasons that evolutionists continue to ridicule creation science. Peterson does not stay in the safe zone and merely re-package a lot of the "safe" creation arguments, but rather he looks at and discusses some of the more controversial issues. While you may not agree with him on all the issues, and I don't think he would expect you to, he does get you to think about them. That is one of the things that really makes this book stand out.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for the layperson., January 3, 2000
This is my favorite creation/evolution book.

Wow! This book is great! Written by Dennis R. Petersen, it presents the evidence for creation-quite convincingly. He does not go very deeply into any particular subject, instead giving the reader a broad overview of almost all the subjects. The book is divided into the following four sections:

Section One UNLOCKING THE MYSTERIES OF THE EARLY EARTH. This section is about the age of the earth, a very controversial subject. Using evidence such as moon dust and the sun, he shows how small is the augment for an old earth. I'll quote from pages 44:

"Astronomers have set up a measurement scale by which stars are calibrated according to the amount of energy they emit. Letters are designated for each star type...The 'O-type' stars are over 90,000 degrees with diameters 10,000 times the size of our sun (which has a diameter of 864,000). The 'B-type' , though not as big, are still monstrous energy burners. "These 'O' and 'B' stars are radiating more that 100,000 times the energy coming from our sun. Burning down at that rate, and clocking backward, THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE WOULD HAVE BEEN FILLED WITH THE MASS OF THESE STARS JUST A FEW THOUSAND YEARS AGO! Not millions!" Section two is called UNLOCKING THE MYSTERIES OF EVOLUTION. In this section the author examines the basic theories on which evolution is based and using scientific evidence and common sense, he destroys them. Section three is called UNLOCKING THE MYSTERIES OF ORIGINAL MAN AND THE MISSING LINKS. In this section the author looks at each specimen on the famous chart that "shows" how man evolved from the apes. After reading this section, any sane person is forced to admit that there is (so far) no reason to believe man and apes are related. Section four is called UNLOCKING THE MYSTERIES OF ANCIENT CIVILIZATION. This section challenges the idea that pre-historic man was primitive. Did you know that a Chinese lady has been preserved for 2,100 years? She is so well preserved that her hair is still firmly imbedded in her scalp! This section gives many such examples that early man was not primitive. This book is best for the theistic evolutionist or the Creationist who wants to learn more about the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!, May 1, 2004
I highly recommend this book. I can't believe how mis-informed and even "brainwashed" I've been. I've been a Christian all my life yet I've never disputed "modern sciences" theories on the age of the earth and dinosaurs and the development of technology and many other origins. But it's impossible to hold onto any of modern science's theories about early earth AND say that you believe the Bible 100% because each contradicts the other.
I've always disagreed with evolution but never knew how to back up my reasoning with anything other than "because the Bible says so!"
But this book tells you why and how the Biblical account of creation, man and ages past is true and modern science is wrong. It does it in plain, easy-to-understand language. hte book is full of illustrations and pictures making it an interesting and pleasant read.
I recommend this especially to Christian parents who have children in the public school system. Carefully monitor what your children are being taught in the area of science and ancient history and use the book as a parallel with the Bible to teach them the truth.

Peterson has good intentions -- uphold the authority of scripture with Science. Unfortanutely he is using outdated and fallacious arguments to do. This book only gives many evolutionist a reason to reinforce their thoughts concerning creationism. (i.e. it isn't science, no respectable scientist believes in it, etc..)

Examples: The Second Law of Thermodynamics began with the original sin. There are no beneficial mutations. God created starlight to *appear* millions of lightyears away.

To Creationists: Do NOT use this as a source for debating with evolutionists. Instead, read and use peer-reviewed literature from organizations such as Answers In Genesis or the Institute for Creation Research.

To Evolutionists: Don't use this as an example of "typical creationist beliefs." To do so would be ignorant and dishonest.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable, Great, Intriguing, Makes you Think, February 4, 2003

This book really opens many windows to your thinking process on Creation. Every day there are more scientific facts coming out about DNA, universe being younger than once thought, Humans being younger than once thought....most of it favors the Biblical view of creation. This book has many concepts that can take you into further study on different topics of creation and civilization.

I love the graphics, pictures and color.

Author is careful about not expressing his own opinion, but helping you "THINK" some issues through.

I recommend it to every Creation as a study guide to this topic.

This review is from: Unlocking the Mysteries of Creation: The Explorer's Guide to the Awesome Works of God (Hardcover)
This book is a must for every family who desires to teach the wonderful truths of God's amazing creation. Packed full of scientific research and archaelogical findings. My 9 year old son read this book every night for a month and was extremely excited about the truths he learned. It answered many of the questions he had about our world, sickness, poisonious insects and snakes, and suffering. It built his faith and trust in God.
