A terrific no nonsense explaination of Sensory Dysfunction,
By A Customer
This review is from: Unlocking the Mysteries of Sensory Dysfunction: A Resource for Anyone Who Works With, or Lives With, a Child with Sensory Issues (Paperback)
Great, easy to read for parents and others that have SID children in their life. Highly recommended that parents have teachers, friends, relatives read this to help them understand that our children are in need of gentle support for their needs. Really helped me understand the relative dysfunction that my child has. Gave me hope that with a little education and help from OT we can work on making my childs life much better. It won't be easy, the authors are very honest. No-nonsense, reality based from two mothers of SID children.Another great recommendation is The Out of Sync Child.

Easy reading. Covers typical and atypical behavior of infants, toddlers, preschool and school age. Touched on ways children with these behaviors can disrupt home and school activities. The key is early intervention. Written more for parents of children who have significant SID issues.

This is a very simplified, big-picture look at sensory integration disorder. If you have never heard of sensory integration and are looking for a quick way to get up to speed on the basics, then this book might be helpful. The book is easy to read and covers issues like school, different age groups, and an explanation of what SI is. However, there isn't much text, and what's there is short on details and depth. If you've already read "The Out of Sync Child," by C. S. Kranowitz, then you will probably, like me, find this too simplistic to be worthwhile.

Superficial and unsatisfying,

This review is from: Unlocking the Mysteries of Sensory Dysfunction: A Resource for Anyone Who Works With, or Lives With, a Child with Sensory Issues (Paperback)
This book introduces the concepts but then leaves you hanging. It talks about children who don't fit in with their world in a way that you can't quite put your finger on, but then doesn't give enough examples of what sensory integration dysfunction can actually look like. All SID kids are different from one another, and the problems can manifest in very subtle ways. The book mentions that occupational therapy is helpful, and gives one or two sentences to an (incomplete) assortment of other approaches, but doesn't give you any idea of how they work, or how you can combine them to address your child's specific problems. And it's extremely short on practical day-to-day suggestions of how to make life easier both for the SID child, and the family, friends and teachers they interact with. And I'm probably being petty, but I found the typos disruptive and the font and formatting uncomfortable to read. For someone entering the world of Sensory Integration Dysfunction, I would recommend Carol Stock Kranowitz's The Out-of-Sync Child for a starter on the topic, and Klass and Costello's book, Quirky Kids, for good, solid, compassionate, even funny advice on how to navigate daily life, the school system, and the medical system with a child who doesn't quite experience the world the same way everyone else does.

What a great way to get a quick, overall picture of individuals with sensory issues. I did not get bogged down with so much detail, yet it was thorough. It proved to be an informational, interesting easy-read for me.

This book should be read for anyone working with individuals on the autism spectrum. Pauline and Elizabeth have great suggestions for some of the issues that can be more challenging (public restrooms, public outings, baths, dressing). I thoroughly enjoyed the 1st hand account of these ladies in their journey to understand their children's pain, and to bring out the very best in them.

I wanted a book that would be simple and straight forward. I intended to buy it for family members that were having a hard time understanding what we were going through after my son's diagnosis of Sensory Integration Dysfunction. And this book helped immensely. For my husband and I, I bought the Out of Sync Child and The Out of Sync Child Has Fun. But I wanted an indepth book for me and something more basic for family members that would need some understanding of my son.

Sensory Disorder...A really difficult concept to understand for those of us who do not have it, yet very real for those who do.
For those who live with someone who suffers from the disorder, it is so very important to understand them and their specific needs. For these individuals, it is of utmost importance to recognize the symptoms so they can be dealt with accordingly. This book really sheds some light on the mysteries surrounding the disorder and gives guidance to making the right decisions for the child when it comes to school, sports, treatment, discipline, etc. I recommend this book as well as "Ten Things Every Child With Autism Wishes You Knew". It is another excellent resource.

Cathy's review of Unlocking the Mysteries of Sensory Dysfunction,
This review is from: Unlocking the Mysteries of Sensory Dysfunction: A Resource for Anyone Who Works With, or Lives With, a Child with Sensory Issues (Paperback)
I read this book in order to gain more insight into my grandaughter's problem. I found the book to be very informative and down to earth. However, I felt that it would have been much more pleasurable to read if there had been colored illustrations or something to break the monotany of the black and white type. It has the appearance of a college term paper.

This is a great book. I wish this was the first book I had read after my son was diagnosed with PDD-NOS. This book will help you get your kid and your family through the day. I already read "The Out of Sync Child" but found this book really put sensory integration into layman's terms that a parent could understand. It also reads fast but has a huge amount of targeted information in it. If you need fast help with a hard to manage kid who is getting OT or PT or is on the spectrum, this book is for you.Bless Liz and Pauline for taking the time to write this. |
