Review

A compelling theory about the chemistry of skin color that includes step-by-step advice for those who want to lighten their skin. While the belief that one skin color is superior to another is unthinkable for many, Vietnamese author Ho reiterates a powerful social reality: In many parts of the world, including the United States, fair skin is equated with beauty. Part autobiography, part instruction manual, the book describes how she experienced shame as a child because of her complexion, which was darker than other members of her family. Ho s experiences drove her to develop a method to alter skin color while pursing her doctorate in nutrition at San Francisco State University. The author claims great success the cover shows before and after pictures of her transformation from olive to nearly ivory-white. Ho devotes much of her book to proving her theory that complexion has little to do with genes but instead is a product of diet and atmospheric toxins. She contends that some countries are likelier to produce darker-skinned people because of poverty, malnutrition and geographical elements like volcanoes. To her credit, Ho offers sound nutritional advice avoid smoking and excessive antibiotics, stick to whole foods and hormone-free dairy products. However, readers may wish that in choosing to study the science of skin care, Ho might have also discovered her unique beauty and focused her expertise on well being rather than the struggle to conform. Even so, her method is more realistic than most of the claims that come with many anti-aging products, which promise that we can transcend time itself provided we buy the right cream. An intriguing guide that might comfort readers who seek to fit social definitions of beauty. --Kirkus Discoveries

About the Author

How Dr. Thienna Solved Your Skin Problems.......... As a young girl growing up in Vietnam, Dr. Thienna found herself comparing her own skin, to the smooth, alabaster complexion of her mother. She wondered why her skin was several different shades darker, uneven in color throughout her body, and prone to deve-loping thick, fibrous scars at the slightest pimple or abrasion. Even worse, the skin on Dr. Thienna s elbows, knees, feet and ankles was embarrassingly rough, thick and dark ashen gray in color........... Over the years, Dr. Thienna tried every skin preparation imaginable to improve her total body complexion. But to her dismay, these products only darkened her skin and made the anomalies more obvious. Her intense desire to correct her own skin problems became an obsession, driving Dr. Thienna to learn everything she could about the science of human skin. After seven years of scientific research, Dr. Thienna solved one of the most enduring mysteries on earth the causes for variation in human skin color. With her revolutionary breakthrough in the altering of human skin color. You can now use her method to solve your own skin riddles. .......... About Dr. Thienna .......... 5.0 out of 5 stars Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color, February 5, 2008
This review is from: Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color: The Strictly Natural Way to Dramatically Lighten Your Skin Color Through Diet and Lifestyle (Paperback)
Did you every wonder about the following?

Why do men tend to have darker skin than women? Why do the poorest countries have the darkest people? Why do some African American celebrities seem to get lighter over time? Why do I have a tan even when I do not go out in the sun?

If so, Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color is a must read for you.

Thienna was born in Vietnam where white skin is treasured as a characteristic of beauty. Her mother, sister and brothers had a light complexion but she did not. This caused Thienna much distress.

By the time Thienna was twelve years old, her family moved to San Francisco. She tried several things to lighten her skin but it only darkened it. Thienna came to the conclusion that scientific research did not have the answer to her questions.

Since Thienna is a nutritionist, she started her quest by investigating how nutrition influences skin color. She was able to make many connections between what people eat and their skin color. As the author continued her research and experimentation, her skin color lightened. It is important to point out that she did not use any toxic or botanically based chemicals, no drugs and no steroids.

The author gives us some very interesting facts regarding Von Luschan's Chromatic Scale, the first tool used to classify skin color.

Thienna points out that melanin is the basic building block of your skin pigment; however, its characteristics make it very difficult to study.

The author states that one of the most important determinants of skin color is the amount of sulfur in the skin. If you change the amount of sulfur in the pigment producing layers of your skin, you can change the skin color.

Another factor in determining skin color is the environment.

Thienna gives the reader detailed information on selecting a diet that is good for the skin and tells us about foods and drugs we should not even touch.

Unlocking the Mystery to Skin Color is an intriguing and interesting book. It is very obvious that the author has done much research in order to be able to write this book. This book is easy to understand and gives the reader a thorough history on skin color. Throughout the book there are sections called "Warning" where the author advises the reader on what they should not do. There are several photographs, charts and lists to help the reader understand the points the author is making. The reader will also find a lists of "Dos and Don'ts" in order to have fantastic skin. Thienna backs up her research with several before and after photos of people who have been able to lighten their skin by using her method. If you are interested in changing your skin color or want more information about restoring damaged skin, this is the book for you. The author has done a thorough job in writing this book and if you ever had any questions regarding skin color, I'm sure you will find the answers here. As the author states, skin color is not fixed. Thienna gives the reader plenty to think about. I know it made me do a lot of thinking as I read this book. Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color is highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not enough scientific evidence., June 15, 2009
This review is from: Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color: The Strictly Natural Way to Dramatically Lighten Your Skin Color Through Diet and Lifestyle (Paperback)
What she is saying here maybe worth looking into. However, there is not enough scientific evidence to support the claims so far. I've tried monobenzone and it works at lifting the pigment, but it is unnatural looking.

I purchased some of Ms. Ho's products, the lightening shake and pills. She is a little too expensive for me. She has very attractive black packaging but her shake came with only a few months before expiration which I was put off that maybe she is not selling much of this stuff or not very many ppl have heard about it, but at any rate, I need longer expiration date than just about 3 months especially for a powder shake. Her pills have high levels of synthetic vitamins.
I think you can get really good results with skin by limiting fried foods and eating a more raw fruit, vegetable diet with steam or baked fish, chicken and limit red meats. Taking natural vitamin c helps as well.
Though she is godawfully expensive, I am tempted to purchase her shake again because I liked the taste of it mixed with milk and request from her company to not send out the oldest can of it that expires in a few months.

BTW Miss Ho, was never really dark. She has always had white skin, just with some darker undertones to it, so it is much easier for her to lighten her skin versus someone who was born dark.

5.0 out of 5 stars In depth look at skin color, October 5, 2010
This review is from: Unlocking the Mystery of Skin Color: The Strictly Natural Way to Dramatically Lighten Your Skin Color Through Diet and Lifestyle (Paperback)
This book was very helpful and I learned so much!! True, Dr. Thienna does use a very scientific rhetoric throughout this book (making it difficult at times for some people to follow), but that is her standpoint. She views skin color from a researcher's point of view in order to discover why it occurs deeper in some than others--and not just in humans, animals and birds too. I think she did a great job.
