Book Description

Bears, princes, witches, dwarves, and other fanciful fairy tale creatures step out in this charming story about Annie and her sister Gwendolyn ... and Gwendolyn's beloved prince, Beldegard the Bear. You see, Beldegard is only human when he's near Annie, so Gwendolyn is desperate to find the evil dwarf who turned Beldegard into a bear in the first place, and reverse the terrible spell. But Annie has just traipsed all over the kingdom to free her sister from the Sleeping Beauty spell...will she want to set out on a magical quest once more? Or has she had enough of watching her sister gaze lovingly into Beldegard's eyes?
With trademark humor and many delightful twists, E. D. Baker brings us back to a magical land that offers many layers of fun and fantasy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Princess Annie is back and better than ever! October 15, 2012
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was pleasantly surprised when I was searching through my Kindle book suggestions and came across this. I had previously read "The Wide Awake Princess" and I loved it, but I had no idea that the author had a sequel lined up. As much as I enjoyed the first book, this one was even better! E.D. Baker just has a knack for weaving all the fairytale characters that we love into an exciting tale that the whole family can enjoy, not just the kids. I'm a 21 year old college student who can attest to that!

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely book. Great funny New output on old fairy tales. February 18, 2013

I loved this book so much. I could read it like a billion times! Definitely one of my favourites. The reason I took a star off was because they forgot to capitalize some of the characters name four times (yes I was counting)! Anyway back to the book all in all its a great read for anyone from kids to teens to adults!

5.0 out of 5 stars My daughter loved this book February 24, 2013
    Format:Hardcover
We read this book to my second-grade daughter after reading The Wide-Awake Princess. My daughter loved the brave princess Annie's adventurousness, and enjoyed how the book incorporated familiar fairy tales with a twist. I liked how Annie uses her mind and experience to solve problems, rather than relying on magice, like so many others in the book do. It is a great message for a girl to excel being her "true self", rather than relying on help and "saving" from fairy godmothers. I would recommend this book for second-grade and up - there is a lot of great but hard-to-understand vocabulary for younger ones, but reading with a parent helps.

    4.0 out of 5 stars A Fun Middle-Grade Fantasy July 9, 2013
    By 1110cg
    Format:Hardcover
Unlocking the Spell is a cute middle-grade fantasy novel. Baker does a great job of adding plenty of the recognizable fairytales into the book, but having fresh twists on each of them. There are many characters profiled throughout the story, yet they always seem to have depth and unique personalities, which is one of my favorite elements about Unlocking the Spell. The only negative is that I wish the ending of the book was a bit more detailed, you hear about the dwarf that the characters are seeking the entire novel, but once they come face-to-face with him, the confrontation is very brief. Overall, this is a fun fantasy read; 4/5 stars.
