A Great CD, bottom line,

Jacob Bannon is one of my favorite vocalists today. He writes some of the best lyrics I've ever heard or read. I found this CD at a mom 'n pop shop for $6.50 brand new, and I have to say that it was worth more than the original price. Most of the songs are spectacular, and it's hard for me to pick the highlights of this CD. So if you're a fan of Converge, this is a definite must-have in your collection. If you've just heard of them but not owned any of the CDs, this would be a great starting point. But if you don't like them, well whatever, your choice.

I bought this CD the other day, it was the last Converge I still needed. I wasn't expecting it to be fantastic, since the tracks are obviously just demos and unreleased tracks.
Now I AM CONFUSED. The demo tracks are on this CD are MUCH better than their counterparts on When Forever Comes Crashing! The demos sound much more crunchy and aggressive... I've always thought WFCC suffered from low-quality recording and here's the proof.. the demos are BETTER. Great songs, great riffs. the last two songs are live and off of the Poacher Diaries, with agoraphobic nosebleed. If you've heard the Poacher Diaries, you're probably a little disappointed. Locust Reign and This is Mine are MUCH MUCH better recorded live on this CD. Finally. The first 7 tracks. These range from decent to awesome with one MAJOR standout. UNDO. UNDO. UNDO. UNDO. This might be my new favorite Converge song. This album is a MUST for Converge fans.

In the dark of our longest nights, we fall apart. Waiting for our end before it begins, we fall apart.,

Converge, what can be said that hasn't already? Such an incredible band that even an album full of b-sides and demo versions is better than most of what is being released out there today. Even though line-up changes have plagued converge,Jacob Bannon has always kept it together and kept the band strong. His lyrics are so passionate and heart felt, that many of his songs have brought tears to me eyes (i.e The Saddest Day, Flowers and Razorwire,) Being that about half of the songs here are demo versions of songs from "When Forever Comes Crashing" some who have that album, may be worried they waste their money and not get enough bang for their buck. Worry not though. Not only are the new songs more than worthy but it just can complete any Converge fanatics collection. So be it casual or obsessive fan, I recommend this.
Downpour - 4.5/5 An opening song you should exspect, heavy and relentless. The converge trademark. It only sets up for what is to come. Flowers and Razorwire - 100/5 One of my favorite song ever. The first minute is a ballad type, before becoming pure and brutal. I'd buy this cd simply for this one. Lyrics that tug at your heart and music that makes you thrash like tomorrow is never coming. Tremor - 5/5 The "You Fail Me" album had "Hope Street" and "Unloved and Weeded Out" has "Tremor" a short song, which keeps you headbanging through the whole thing. "In the dark of our longest nights, we fall apart. Waiting for our end before it begins, we fall apart." Home Song - 4.5/5 The drumming in the intro here(which compliments the bass nicely), just made me want to pace around and start throwing punches, then the breakdown kicks in...slowly followed by Jacobs vocals and all bets are off. A mosh pit anthem For You - 5/5 Could be called "Home Song pt 2" cause like the song mentioned before, this is a pit anthem. It starts out with some scratchy guitar work, before rapid drums hitting in every direction starts. Another song that if it doesn't leave you dead, will definetly leave you headbanging. Jacob's Ladder - 5/5 A sad song, with frantic music. The lyrics to me portray longing but then a hatred for this longing. Mourning perhaps. Undo. - 6/5 Another amazing song, with a great intro riff. One of the best here and is sure to be considered a Converge classic in a few years. Towing Jehova (Demo) - 6/5 One of my favorite songs from "When Forever Comes Crashing" the demo quality gives this a harsh type sound which I felt it needed in the other version. The High Cost of Playing God (Demo) - 4.5/5 The songs lyrics really left me speechless after hearing it, overall the music is good here but the lyrics make this one what it is. When Forever Comes Crashing (Demo) - 5/5 a trippy type guitar riff starts this song and carries on once everything else kicks in. Jacob's vocals sound have a static effect on his voice (due to the fact that it is a demo) The Year of the swine (Demo) - 10/5 My favorite song off of WFCC. The breakdown at the end is mind blowing. The lyrics are some of the most emotional i've heard from Jacob Bannon. "Just for one split second, I want to be the lucky one, not to have the pleasure of tasting the salt oftears when we kiss." Letterbomb (Demo) 4.5/5 - A slower song, maybe even the slowest from WFCC. Which only makes Jacobs vocals sound more throat ripping. Locust Reign (Live) 5/5 - These two live ones are from the Poacher Diaries split album. They do a decent job of capturing a Converge live show, but trust me I saw them live in Sayreville, Nj on the 15th of July during SOTU tour and this is just one amazing live band you have to see for yourself. This is Mine (Live) 5/5 Two words, pure chaos. Almost like being hit with a huge wave. or atleast that is how I feel after hearing this. So, in conclusion if you love Converge, buy it. Enjoy.

A Kid's Review

i'm listening to this right now and i just have to say i'm really impressed. the sound of the rare tracks are all fresh and i can still say that there is no such thing as "filler" in converge's vocabulary. i've bought cds by other artists with previously unreleased work and quickly found out that those were unreleased for a reason. yet here these tracks are amazing. the sound is more energetic and uses a variety of high pitched notes, all sounding like a cascade of color.
the album starts off with an incredible opening track, which is something converge fans have probably come to expect. downpour is one of the most poweful things i've ever heard in my life. it basically starts with some killer breakbeats (including koller's genius drumming) and after a while receeds into some entwining voices which do an excellent job of building up into a run and then a series of epic yells, which is trademark of converge. the demos from WFCC aren't as good as the re-release of the album, but the poor quality accually adds a bit of variety and flavor from the re-release. a song that apperently went through a few changes since the latest reprint is letterbomb, i didn't even recognize it. as far as the last two live tracks are concerned, they are powerful but almost incoherent. it would be amazing to have studio recordings. only 4 stars since i already had WFCC.

because I don't own "when forever comes crashing",

It's true...I'm a big converge fan, and I still don't have a copy of "When Forever Comes Crashing." I had heard some tracks, some of which were pretty good, but they all seemed very muddy, less exciting than most converge tracks. what does all that have to do with THIS cd? Well, Unloved and Weeded Out(a very missleading title) contains quite a few demo versions of tracks on when forever comes crashing. most of these were new to me, and the ones I'd heard before sounded twice as good(the when forever comes crashing demo especially). Though, that says more about the production of "when forever comes crashing" than it does about this cd, to be honest. This is not a perfect cd. It claims to be a collection of rare and saught after tracks, but for the most part, the only tracks I hadn't heard were from "when forever comes crashing." There are even new versions of two of the weaker songs found on "petitioning the empty sky." not exactly rare tracks, and worse yet, these versions don't sound as good! The few tracks I hadn't even heard of, are for the most part, really good. Though I don't know if they're worth buying the cd for, if you already own the other releases...unless you're a truly diehard fan. So there you have it, most people looking at this cd might want to save their money, but for me, this was a bunch of new songs from one of my faveorite bands. And besides, the live rendition of Locust Reign is just great

The Hidden Gem,
By
This review is from: Unloved & Weeded Out (Audio CD)
I could easily rant & rave over each and every Converge album that in one way or another has been my favorite album ever recorded. But I think giving their hidden gem a decent review, would be the better bet. Unloved & Weeded Out stands as Converge's select polished secret catalogue of intense, visceral and very raw songs. First ripping your face off with my undisputed favorite Converge song: 'Downpour' (for the drums alone), the bands most stark, carnal display of hardcore excellence (make sure you watch the video to get the full effect.) While that track sets the standard for the rest of the album, it then cascades into a mix up of some of their most violently melodic tracks. Or the Skull mincing bass intro of 'For You' which bleeds directly into the albums centerpiece; 'Jacobs Ladder', a hardcore song that redefines the term 'Shred'. While the first brilliant half will leave you begging for more. The band chose a small handful of songs of their monumental album 'When Forever Comes Crashing'. The album's foresight of a greyish, haunting tone, takes startling power over the WFCC tracks. As the select tracks havebeed stripped down and elegantly slaughtered into a chainsaw sounding rawness which you might find better compared to the originals. The only downfall to this album is the spare live tracks, which I never find impressing. But otherwise, if you just got into this iconic group, make sure you buy this album. As it finds them at their most tempered, and the results will haunt your ears for decades to come.

What the Hell is with you people!? Whether you are a new Converge fan or an old one, you should definitely buy this kick ass cd! I mean this cd is no JANE DOE, but it still has all the elements of a great Converge cd even if it is mostly unreleased or demo tracks (By the way, the demo tracks F*cking own) it still has the brutality and insanity as with any Converge album.Plus you get two amazing live tracks from they're California show! This is a must for Converge fans, and even if you are just a casual Converge listener, Pick this album up! |
