Travel guide to events rather than to places,
By Michael A. Duvernois (Minneapolis, MN United States) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: 300 Unmissable Events and Festivals Around the World (Frommer's Day by Day - Pocket) (Paperback)
There have been a number of these sorts of guides that I've seen over the last few years. I bought this one though, and it's rather well conceived and executed. There's a good range of events/festivals/parties/happenings from a wide range of cultures in all corners of the world. Highlights include standards such as Oktoberfest, Mighty Mud Mania, Burning Man, and odder events such as the Yasothon Rocket Festival. There's the Venice Carnival and the Northern Lights, the Dubai shopping festival and the pagan Beltane Festival in Edinburgh.
There are traditional religious festivals, comedy events, and extreme sports featured here. There should be ideas for most anyone to get some tomato throwing in, or to watch tango competitions.

No San Fermin running of the bulls?!,

So far the book seems pretty good. I know from my own experience that the insider tips they give for Oktoberfest in Munich are right on, that hopefully the rest are too. I was really disappointed to see San Fermin's Running of the Bulls somehow didn't make the cut, though. Makes me wonder what other great events they excluded....
