Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Mel Odom lives in Moore, Oklahoma, where there are reportedly no vampires. But there's lots of interest in finding out everything there is to know about them. And some people around the neighborhood do mulch their gardens at the oddest of times.

In addition to writing for Buffy, he's written books in the fantasy, SF, computer gaming comics, action-adventure, and horror fields, including titles for Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, Allen Strange, Young Hercules, and Alex Mack, as well as the novelization of Blade.

His e-mail address is denimbyte@aol.com, and he enjoys corresponding with readers.

More About the Author

I write in a number of fields, but always with the hope of telling an interesting tale that will incite a reader to think for himself or herself, to examine his or her own place in the world, and offer a little nudge in the direction of dreams, faith, and personal growth in spite of whatever odds a person has to face. I also believe we were all put here for a purpose. Hopefully, several purposes. I'm a father, a little league coach, a teacher, a friend, and a writer. I struggle to keep that balance, as many of us do these days, but I hold tightly to the belief that I'm doing all I can be doing, and doing what I should be doing.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best books in the young adult series..., May 16, 2001
By
This review is from: Unnatural Selection (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) (Mass Market Paperback)
Willow isn't too happy with her new baby-sitting job. The strange noises she hears in the house are starting to scare her, but nothing could prepare her for being attacked by a creature that has taken the place of baby Tad. Only just managing to get away, Willow can't stop thinking about what happened and is haunted by images of the missing child. At the same time, Buffy has her hands full with the vampires of Sunnydale. When she and Giles discover some ancient artefacts at an archaeological site, it seems they may some how be connected to the missing children. But what is behind the disappearances and why will no one do anything about it?

"Unnatural Selection" is a great addition to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Series, although you don't have to be a fan of the TV programme to enjoy this book. This is probably one of the best young adult Buffy books around. The author manages to write convincingly about the characters and they all act as you expect them to. The plot was fast paced, enjoyable and kept me reading right up to the end. I recommend this book to fans of the series and any one who likes a mix of horror and fantasy.

4.0 out of 5 stars READ IT, IT'S GREAT!!, October 10, 2001
This review is from: Unnatural Selection (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) (Mass Market Paperback)
The little baby Willow is supposed to babysit starts making threats, the woods and the park is flooding with vamps and Cordy is planning Spring Blow in the park, get ready for an adventures trip to Sunnydale(has it ever been boring?NOPE!!)
Willow is organizing demonstrations against a company that wants to build an amusment park in the park she grew up in. Cordy is furious with Will because this will ruin her plans for a big Spring party in the park. Then evil, mad faries(changelings) kidnap little babies to get their way with the forest(they are protecting it,kind of). They kidnap the baby Wills watching. Mean while more and more vamp are found in the forest near an archeaological dig.The Scooby gang has a lot to do and as the plot thickens it seems like it's to much for them to handle.
What happens? Read it, you won't be abel to put it away.
It is a really good book, not up to Golden and Holder standards but all in all good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vampires, Changelings and fairies oh my!, September 1, 2000
By
This review is from: Unnatural Selection (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) (Mass Market Paperback)
Fantasy and horror collide in this Buffy novel. Willow is in the center of a growing evil. Babies are disappearing and no one seems to want to do anything about it. When the vampire population explodes the slayer has her hands full. When Willow is kidnapped to be used as a human scarifice the scoobies moblize to save her. Angel, Buffy and Oz make a good team. The action is exciting. I enjoyed the battle with the little people. They held their own.I believed Angel and Buffy could be mortally wounded by the fairies. The folklore was very interesting. One of the most moving moments is Angel's conversation with a grieving mother. I recommend this book. A reader does not need to be a fan to enjoy this excellent addition to Buffy fiction.
