More About the Author

Bob Sehlinger, a Lowell Thomas Award winning journalist, is best known as the creator and producer of the Unofficial Guide Series published by Wiley Publishing Inc. and sold worldwide.

He is credited with being the first to apply research techniques from the fields of operations research and statistics to travel guides. Among other projects, he was able to develop mathematical models that could save theme park patrons more than three hours of standing in queue in a single day.

Sehlinger and his research team (pictured) have had numerous adventures and developed some unusual methodologies. Here's a sampling from research for The Unofficial Guide To Walt Disney World:

"We've slept in every Disney resort multiple times and more than 80 Orlando-area properties. Only once did we wake up covered in bugs. (It was a non-Disney hotel.)"

"We test hotel room soundproofing using a sophisticated digital sound meter and a copy of The Who's Greatest Hits."

"The first time we did Orlando spa reviews, one of our researchers had an eyebrow burned off during a waxing that went horribly awry."

"We once logged more than 700 miles in one week on buses to test Disney's transportation system, and never left Disney property. The bus drivers got so used to us being on board that one forgot we were there and took us back to the bus garage when his shift ended."

"We test pillow fluffiness using a measurement process we invented. We intended to use a fake human head as part of the test, but worried about getting it through airport security. We settled on a gallon jug of water, which is about the same size and weight as an average adult's noggin."

"When we test counter-service restaurants, we order at least one of everything on the menu, and break up in to small teams to sample each thing. We've tried every counter-service food item in every American Disney theme park."

"Our crowd prediction models take in to account everything from the day of week and time of year, to the vacation schedules of the fifty largest school districts east of the Mississippi, to weather phenomena including temperature, rainfall and humidity."

Bob Sehlinger is founder and co-owner of Keen Communications, a book publishing company that includes Menasha Ridge Press in Birmingham, Alabama; Clerisy Press in Cincinatti, Ohio; and Wilderness Press in Berkeley, California. The author of twenty-seven books, Sehlinger is a past president of the Publishers Association of the South, and has served at the invitation of the U.S. State Department and the U.S. Information Service on educational missions for publishers in Hungary, Romania, and Russia.

Before becoming involved in writing and publishing, Sehlinger was CEO of SAGE, inc., a wilderness arts teaching and expeditional company that produced courses in kayaking, rock climbing, survival, and backpacking (among others) for high schools and universities in a 7-state area. During this period Sehlinger served as president of the Eastern Professional River Outfitters Association. Sehlinger makes his home in Birmingham, Alabama where he continues to be an avid river runner and mountain biker.

4.0 out of 5 stars Awesome kid info! October 12, 2011
Format:Paperback
I bought a regular TUG 2009 at a discount store to start learning info about our trip in Jan 2012. So much has changed since we went in 2000! I decided to get an updated version because of all the changes (or so I've heard, this is our first family trip.) This book is essential in any form. LOTS of good info for parents, especially if you have preschoolers. It is a smaller book compared to the TUG WDW, but more focused on kids. It condenses some of the WDW hotel info and does not include as many of the reader comments. Fully describes the attractions and shows to help you decide what the kids will like. Great book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelieveable February 14, 2012
Format:Paperback
When planning a trip to Walt Disney World I ran across this book at a local library. I picked it up and was immediately impressed at the wealth of information and tips about visits to WDW. However, I was skeptical of the authors' promises that their touring plans would minimize our wait times in line, but still bought the book and tried out the touring plans for families with small children at Magic Kingdom, Epcot and Animal Kingdom. Our family had passes for Disneyland for years and we never knew any touring plans existed, so we would spend our days at Disneyland and California Adventure wandering around and standing in long lines. When we tried the touring plan out at Walt Disney World we had low expectations. After only 2 hours at Epcot we had already seen 8 major attractions. By the end of the day we had been on every single attraction, and this scenario was repeated at Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom, using the touring plans in the book. We were quickly blown away at their efficiency, accuracy and our ability to see the maximum number of attractions in one day! We had planned to visit the Magic Kingdom for two days, but found that by following the touring plans we could see almost all the attractions in one day instead of two. (Granted, we went in early February which is a slower time of year.) I highly recommend this book for its invaluable tips, accurate assessments of rides, food and hotels and especially for the touring plans! When you spend thousands of dollars on a vacation, you want to make sure you're prepared and informed so you don't waste a minute of your precious family time. I've already recommended this book to many friends, and will continue to do so.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must for families with small kids January 16, 2012
By Rusty
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
OK, I'm going out on a limb as we are still in the planning stages of our trip, but I think this guide will prove to be invaluable. Despite being a seasoned traveler (with and without kids) and having been to Disney World once and Disney Land twice (as an adult, going with other adults) this book had suggestions/recommendations for things I would never have thought of based on the authors's experiences and surveys of families who have attended previously (who knew that you need to make your reservation SIX months in advance for some of more popular restaurants and character meals?!) and contingency plans (OK, so you didn't plan ahead 6 months, what places STILL may have reservations 1-2 months ahead of when you want to go), descriptions and ratings of lodging, restaurants, attractions (i.e., do most preschoolers consider this ride too scary?), how to beat the crowds (which is not something I worried about too much previously but now know that long waits in line in the hot sun with small kids is a recipe for disaster!). The end of book includes suggested touring schedules (if you want to spend 1 day in the Magic Kingdom-follow this itinerary to see the major sites with the least crowds; If you want to spend 2 days in the Magic Kingdom, follow this one, etc).
