She covered the U.S.–Mexico border as a senior editor with San Diego Magazine and as a contributor for the Los Angeles Times, then left full-time employment when a publisher asked her to write a book on the coastal resorts of Mexico. Since then, Maribeth has authored or contributed to more than 20 travel books about Mexico and has received the prestigious Pluma de Plata award for her writing about the country. She also has authored books on Costa Rica, Peru, Argentina, Hawaii, and San Diego, where she lives just a few blocks from the beach with her husband, Gary. Her writings on social, legal, and medical issues, along with her travel articles, have garnered more than two dozen awards from journalism organizations.

Jane Onstott earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish language and Hispanic literature from San Diego State University, with a year’s study in Madrid. Since then she has lived and traveled extensively in Mexico and Latin America. She worked as head of the Communication and Information office of the Charles Darwin Research Station in the Galápagos Islands, and has worked as a Spanish-language interpreter and translator in Mexico and the United States. Jane has collaborated with colleague and friend Maribeth Mellin on several books, including San Diego Best Places (Sasquatch Books, 2002) and The Insiders’ Guide to San Diego (Globe Pequot Press, 2004). A San Diego resident, Jane travels to Mexico often to work for a variety of travel publications. 2.0 out of 5 stars Not like the other unofficial quides, June 1, 2007
By
This review is from: The Unofficial Guide to Mexico's Best Beach Resorts (Unofficial Guides) (Paperback)
This book is not written in the same format as the other unofficial guides. This guide only covers a handful of resorts and has very little detail on the ones it does cover. The book is split up into sections and only covers about 10 hotels per area, come on these areas have hundreds of hotels. I mean I don't expect every one to be covered but it looks like the only ones they cover are the ones willing to pay to be in this crummy book. I own several of the unofficial guide books (the unofficial guide to Disney World is a lifesaver) and in the past have found them very useful and entertaining. The other unofficial guides have a lot of relevant information and tips on how to avoid crowds, when the best time to go is and sample itineraries' to help you get the most out of your vacation. This book has none of those things, it is poorly written with little information on the resorts and even less on what is around the resorts. To give an example the resort description says "great resort for families" but then has no information on child care or child activities. Great, why don't I just check out the resorts website and save 15 bucks! I understand this stuff changes all the time but the other books I in this series have first hand reviews of most of the hotels and attractions along with a guide to what is age appropriate. This book nope, none of that the resort information looks like it was copied of a press release. This book is a waste of money, the little information contains can be found for free at any of the web sites for the few resorts that it covers. Having traveled across the US and Europe and owned many many travel books I have to say this is about the worst one I've seen.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed, October 31, 2009
By
Mannon (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
I purchased this book because I have also found other Unofficial Guide books to be very helpful but I totally agree with the person who wrote the first comment. I was really disappointed that such a limited number of resorts were covered in some of the sections.

I wish that I could return the book to the store but I had already started highlighting inside it so it's too late now. I got more information off of the internet from [...] and Expedia.

Don't waste your money on this book. Just take the time to do the research on the internet and you'll be much happier. In my opinion this book is not worth it.
