Editorial Reviews

Simian Mobile Disco's James Ford and Jas Shaw, esteemed producers individually and
acclaimed band together return with their new album, UnPatterns. With their albums to date, spanning from their seminal debut Attack Decay Sustain Release to 2011's compilation album Delicacies, the only throughline in their varied career has been their constant refusal to play by the rules, their creative restlessness resulting in them staying perpetually ahead of the curve.

UnPatterns is a record full of love, dedication, hard-earned experience, obvious understanding of decades of electronic music from across scenes and styles, and huge fun. It's completely of the now, showing a band as familiar with Blawan and Lone as they are with Silver Apples and Phuture, but never jumping on bandwagons.

To the first review who called this their second album, it's actually their third. It's a good thing you are such a good fan.

Anyway, this album is better than their two previous albums in my opinion (that is not to say the first two aren't good, they are). With this album though it is important to realize that they have gone in a slightly different direction. This album is less huge banging beats and more of a progressive house vibe (a genre which I really like). I also think the song composition is much deeper than that of their two previous albums. The songs themselves seems to be more emotional and go for a specific mood where the songs on the two previous albums were more about having fun. Think "Wooden" from their first album and then this is almost like an album built around that vibe. So really, it pretty easy to determine if you would like this album based on that observation alone. If you like electronic music you will like this album. If you just like certain types of electronica here and there then maybe you want to preview the album first.

Wasn't as fond of the previous release. This one has 5 or so tracks I really dig. They've been playing a lot of the tunes from this album live and works for some great shows (still wish they'd throw in Sleep Deprivation here n there though :D)

Nowhere near as good as their first album. I was totally disappointed with their second effort. Hopefully their next album will be better.
