Educate Yourself. Make a Plan. Take Action.,
By
This review is from: The Unplanned Pregnancy Book for Teens and College Students (Paperback)
What am I going to do? What is my family going to think? What will my boyfriend think? What will he do?
These are just a few of the many questions that might go through the mind of a teenage female (soon to be woman) that discovers that she is or might be pregnant. Unfortunately, if the test proves positive, her life as she knew it ends and those personal questions become extremely important. Not only will she be bombarded with emotional stress but financial stress to supply healthcare and support for a `new edition' to the world. Within such a short amount of time, a young woman is forced to make life-changing decisions at a time she is extremely emotional and least equipped to do so. What on Earth could lighten the load for a young woman who has suddenly found herself with this seemingly unbearable responsibility? The answer to this question, in my opinion, is the following. "Educate yourself. Make a plan. Take action." Author Dorrie Williams-Wheeler has written "The Unplanned Pregnancy Book for Teens and College Students" for exactly this purpose. "The Unplanned Pregnancy Book for Teens and College Students" is less than 120 pages, however, it is an encyclopedia of information. It could serve as the OnStar© for any young woman who has become lost in the wilderness of unplanned pregnancy. Its advice provides them something they don't always know they have-Options. Confusion without hope becomes destruction. This book provides hope. Not only is it packed with information on adoption, safe haven laws, paternity testing, financial assistance and valuable phone numbers and web resources, it contains stories of young women who have been in the same situation. It contains stories, from young women who've been in those shoes, who were still able to forge ahead. These stories reassure young women that they are not alone and that they are not helpless. In the spirit of the author, I believe I can say that no young woman wants to find herself in this situation. It is a situation that people wish not to discuss until they are faced with it. I will also go further to say that you might not need this book on your bookshelf...however, I would not necessarily recommend you buy this book for yourself. Those in need of it are probably not thinking "Is there a book out there for me?" Nevertheless, I guarantee you that within the last 5 years, or maybe even now, you've known a young woman who desperately needed this book. What these young women need is education and support and this book more than provides this for them. Buy it for them...because for them, it is essential reading. Author, Dorrie Williams-Wheeler, holds a Masters of Science of Education degree from Southern Illinois University. Review by Robert Denson III Managing Editor of Sunpiper Press

Just the Facts, Ma'am,
By
This review is from: The Unplanned Pregnancy Book for Teens and College Students (Paperback)
Williams-Wheeler's book is a plain English guide to everything a teen needs to know if they become pregnant. It encourages girls to educate themselves, decide on an option, and act without delay in a situation that could easily be paralyzing. It opens with how to determine whether you are pregnant, then moves to who to tell--and who not to.
The book is comprehensive, giving all the options for dealing with teen pregnancy, and a step-by-step guide through each. It also covers after-care for each option, then stresses preventing a subsequent pregnancy--from abstinence to all other forms of birth control. Each chapter contains stories from girls who have experienced pregnancy--from age 12 - 22. Some were heart-rending. I appreciate that Williams-Wheeler urges girls to continue their education and to take care of their bodies. An excellent resource for a girl in a bad situation.

More of a reference guide,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Unplanned Pregnancy Book for Teens and College Students (Paperback)
I bought this book thinking it was more of a pregnancy guide for my teenage daughter. What it turned out to be was more of a reference guide for things like adoption, abortion and abandonment. It had a few short personal stories for each section. Definately not a book for a teen who plans to keep her baby.

More Than Informational,

This review is from: The Unplanned Pregnancy Book for Teens and College Students (Paperback)
Dorrie Williams-Wheeler has written the best guide to help teens and young adults with the choices and obstacles when faced with an unplanned pregnancy. She shares real-life stories that will help encourage anyone when faced with this situation. Mrs. Williams-Wheeler has also provided excellent resources that will lead our young girls and young women to trusted people who can help them regardless of their situation. Not only the young ladies, but the young men can learn a lot from reading this book.
Although there are plenty of choices, she emphasizes the importance of making the right decision for you. Prevention and abstinance may be the best, but when an unplanned pregnancy happens, knowing who to turn to and where to go is most important. I wish this book was written when I was a teen, or when my own children became teens. Definitely a book that is needed for such a time as this.

A great first read when you're pregnant,

This book is a quick read. It's a great place to start after the home pregnancy test results are positive. It presents a very non-judgmental approach to dealing with some of the harder realities that today's young woman may be faced with [ie what to do when a casual relationship led to the pregnancy]. The best part of the book are the stories of various young girls, in their own words. This book also has some really good references for a pregnant girl, regardless of how she wants to handle the pregnancy.

Pregnancy Choices,
This review is from: The Unplanned Pregnancy Book for Teens and College Students (Paperback)
The Unplanned Pregnancy Book For Teens & College Students by Dorrie Wheeler-Williams is a must read. Any heterosexual couple engaging in a physical relationship should pick up a copy of this book.
The novel is very informative, educational, and compact. It covers the three choices women face upon learning they are pregnant: raising the child, abortion, or adoption. For the inexperienced mothers to be, there is a list of must haves in preparing for baby. Those choosing the route of abortion, it explains the different procedures and gives an estimated cost. It also gives you information on the different types of adoption. The novel should definately be required reading for High Schools and Colleges. Ms. Wheeler-Williams put a lot of hard work and research into the novel. She took the guesswork out of choices. The Unplanned Pregnancy Book For Teens & College Students shows the reader things are not always as bad as they may seem. There are alternatives and options in every situation. The choice is up to the reader which path they choose follow.

What a great resource guide for young women!,
By Rosa Ortiz "Ms. Rosa" (Hammond, Indiana) - See all my reviews

This is really an excellent book for pregnant teens and college students. The information on parenting is very valuable to someone who doesn't know much about being a parent. I found the chapter "What To Buy Now, and What Can Wait" very helpful. I bought this book for a pregnant church member of mine and together we used it as a resource guide. This book has great info for young women who are pregnant and their pregnancies may have been planned. The chapter on "Continuing Your Education and Parenting" lists colleges and universities that offer family housing. I never realized just how many universities have family housing options. I commend the author for all of the research she did in putting this book together. The book is a little on the short side but the important stuff is all there. It's very objective and the stories from the women in the book show the upside and downside of unplanned pregnancy.
The author lays out facts about abortion, adoption, pregnancy, and just puts all the information out there without opinion. She also notes programs such as WIC and Medicaid--two programs that low income women can benefit from. The activities in the back of the book are helpful as are the discussion questions which are broken down by topic. The author even has Webquests associated with the book on the books website, the URL is listed on the book. Wonderful book! Kudos.

By Loose Leaves Book Review (Atlanta, GA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Unplanned Pregnancy Book for Teens and College Students (Paperback)
The Unplanned Pregnancy Book for Teens and College Students is an excellent resource for young parents-to-be. Williams-Wheeler has compiled a step-by-step guide so an individual can formulate a course of action and gain insight into their purpose in life. The chapters are detailed and offer a non-judgmental description of all the options available. Particular attention is given to determining if you are actually pregnant, how to have conversations with parents and boyfriend/child's father, what to expect during the pregnancy, parental assistance programs, what will the baby need, the 411 on abortion, adoption, future contraception, and an extensive resource section with addresses, telephone numbers and internet addresses.
Williams-Wheeler has taken the time to develop a resource that will enlighten lives and encourage young people. It is written in easy to read language and organized to answer the questions young parents may have. She offers first-hand stories and testimonies from teens and young adults who found themselves in similar situations. There is also a section with questions to stimulate conversation and activities to be used in conjunction with the reading. This is a superb resource for every high school counselor, youth group advisor, or organization that works with teens. Reviewed by M. Bruner for Loose Leaves Book Review
