4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but not really a horror book, December 5, 2009

Sloane's second novel is a winner, although pretty obscure. The writing style is easy to take (my only gripe is telling us ahead of time that some unpleasant things are going to happen). The characters are well drawn, especially one of the central characters, Mrs. Walters, who the reader will want to be a villianess, but somehow cannot feel complete contempt for her. Recommended for mystery lovers (not really a horror novel) and people who are looking for a well-written whopper to keep them company for a few hours. (Original title is The Edge of Running Water; see reviews under that title.)
