A fascinating and evocative read, January 6, 2012
This review is from: Unquiet Souls: A Social History of the Illustrious, Irreverent, Intimate Group of British Aristocrats Known As "the Souls" (Hardcover)
Although I must confess to having done some research for this book, Ms. Lambert was so thorough in delving into the life and times of the Souls that my contribution was a small part of the whole. I don't think I have a conflict of interest in saying that for those interested in Edwardian times, this book is a Masterpiece. Although the Souls may appear as as a group of spoiled, aristocratic young men and women, their group was decimated by the First World War and Ms. Lambert evokes the grief and shock the Souls felt as news of each death arrived.
The Souls were made up of politicians, writers and artists, many of whom scandalised Edwardian England with their behaviour and their opinions. Not only is this book a wonderful portrait of a bygone era, it is superbly written and packed with "gossip" and fact.
