5.0 out of 5 stars Her best CD
If you are familiar with Ms Miles' work, you will love this CD. If you are a first time listener, this is the one to buy. The music and the lyrics are sad, wistful, longing, hopeful and yet so subtle. The music hits you like a gentle breeze, but the lyrics live in your mind like a forceful wind. I LOVE THIS CD.

1.0 out of 5 stars This CD belongs in Dante
In Dante's Inferno, there is a section of hell he titles "Malebolge," in which the sinners, placed in hell for being sullen, are immersed in a muddy swamp to chant their grievances for eternity, mud filling their mouths and only gargled bubbles resulting.

I bring the image up only to enforce how much I dislike this CD. Please don't just label me as...

Track 8..."those who love moonlight across a bed/who question every word thats said" This song is for me, it is for you, it is truly a great great song. Lynn Miles should be one of the most popular song writer/singers out there, but I don't believe she cares about popularity. She just sings her heart out.
I thank her for this collection of songs. Simply lovely.

Like only a few of her contemporaries (Lucinda Williams, Jann Arden and Jackson Browne come quickly to mind), Canadian Lynn Miles has the rare gift of being able to write songs that put into beautiful words the feelings of anyone who has been in love. Songs like "I'm the Moon," "When Did the World" and "Surrender Dorothy" (a nod to Judy Garland), beautifully, intelligently articulate all that the human heart would say if given a voice. Miles uses images and sounds we have all seen and heard as a means of conveying feelings we have all felt "...I'm calling you now/I'm as sad as a train/can you hear me calling/through the cold and the rain?" Still, as sad as most of these songs truly are, what is just as undeniably woven into every bar and lyric is a courage and resiliency that keeps us listening, hoping, even believing that perfect love could be in the next verse or song. And even if it isn't, we know the journey is worth taking. But don't leave this review thinking that "Unravel" is just a series of sad ballads. There's plenty of energy and power in the performances, hers and those of the wonderful band she's assembled, to keep you riveted. Like her previous two releases, Unravel is a Lover's Journey, performed by one of the most talented singer-songwriters working today. Sadly, her gifts continue, for the most part, to fly beneath the radar. Do not pass up an opportunity to hear one of the best; buy this CD, play it, share it. It has heart, energy, passion. They may be hers, but throughout, you'll find yourself time and again mistaking them for your own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why isn't this woman a star????, December 9, 2002

I first saw Lynn back in '96, I think, in a music series a friend was promoting. We were all absolutely knocked out by her brilliant, dark lyrics, beautiful voice and her marvelous self-deprecating sense of humor. We chatted at an after concert party (where she put a "Canadian curse" on me ;-) and I found her to be just as charming off stage as she is on.

I saw Lynn again just the other night (with the exceptional Keith Glass accompanying), and I have to say her songs and her voice just keep getting better. I cannot understand why she's not one of the biggest selling singer-songwriters today. If you can, do try to catch Lynn in person, but if you can't this album (and her other albums) are the next best thing. You'll be converted.

Amazing and no question this is one of the finest albums of the year. Emmy Lou meets Sarah M. meets tenderness. This is a great great record. It is not just a couple of singles it is consistently great from beginning to end. Why is a record like this not on radio every day all day? A must buy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Diamond Lost in The Music Business, July 23, 2002

Lynn Miles has without a doubt released her best work to date with Unravel. Lynn's vocals are sultry, breathy, beautiful, sexy and piercing at times. Lynn uses wonderful vocal range to express her emotions in this 11 song CD. The overall sound of this CD is sombre, yet uplifting in a subtle way. Lynn is in a class by herself when it comes to singing sad love/fullfilment songs in the most beautiful of ways. Unravel has a very organic intimate feel, with eerie guitars swirling in the distance with the vocals in your face, crisp & clear. This Cd would get a 5 star rating (hands down) if it wasn't for a few areas with spotty mixing.
This Cd is simply brilliant. Lynn Miles has stepped out of the shadows with possibly one the best CD's of the year....

5.0 out of 5 stars STILL ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE, February 15, 2004

It's been over a year since the last review, and I've never been moved to write one, but this CD gets more beautiful as it ages. If anyone stumbles across these reviews, just know that Lynn is as good as the best country, folk, country-western, or bluegrass singer/songwriter/performer today. I have never recommended a CD more often or had as many heartfelt thanks for a suggestion. Give the CD a listen, and then spread the joy of your discovery; such beautiful creations deserve greater recognition and the financial rewards that accompany such success.

I love to make compilation albums. I buy music and feel lucky to get one or two cuts off each album. So what's going on here? I like ALL the songs on Unravel. Maybe, I can't be objective because I went to the Minnesota Folk Festival and loved John Gorka and Vance Gilbert, but, Lynn Miles was amazing and stole the show. Take a chance and buy this album - you won't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truth reveals itself, August 2, 2002
This review is from: Unravel (Audio CD)
Having to listened to her two previous albums - if you haven't already then please do - I think this is probably her most mature work so date - both musically and lyrically. There is endless depth to plumb here so do take your time to savour every little ripple. Lynn Miles is precious.

My name is Gene Dawson, host of Dawsonconcerts house concerts in North Potomac, Maryland.

I received Lynn Miles CD, "Unravel", in the mail recently and really came unravelled upon hearing it. Lynn's voice is as perfect as any I've ever heard and her songs easily touch many emotions. The CD is a nice mix of fast and slow songs with unique guitar work.

When the track "Unravel" played, I recalled when I heard the song on a Pittsburgh radio station a few months ago and was so taken with it, I pulled off the road and wrote down the title and artist. What a surprise when I realized it was part of this wonderful CD I just received. That song could could be a big hit in Nashville.

Yes, I'll working on arranging to have Lynn Miles perform at one of our house concerts in 2003. What a special treat that would be for me and everyone else that would be lucky enough to attend.
