Book Description

July 16, 2012 The Gates of Heaven Series (Book 4)
When the simple, backward village of Wentwater begins disappearing one word at a time, no one can figure out how to stop it. Not the learned men living up in the Heights nor the superstitious leaders of the village. But those who had attended the baby naming ceremony seventeen years earlier remember the words of the marsh witch, and her pronouncement that the babe would one day cause the unraveling of Wentwater. In their fear, the villagers banish the parents and set their cottage on fire, and the babe was thought to have perished in the flames. But . . . did she?

Teralyn lives in the Heights and wants nothing more than to create beautiful music on her lap harp. When she comes down to the village for a festival, she falls in love with a villager named Fromer, much to the fury of Fromer’s brother, Justyn. Justyn’s jealousy moves him to make a deal with the witch, and when Wentwater vanishes due to a backfiring spell, it leaves Teralyn, the only person left in the kingdom, with a terrible choice. She must leave her life and forget Wentwater, or she can spend seven long years restoring everything back to the way it was, by spinning nettle into thread and stitching the world back . . . one word at a time.

The Unraveling of Wentwater explores love, jealousy, mercy, and judgment. It spins a tale about the power and magic of words, and as the marsh witch, who keeps words in a jar, warns, “Be careful with your words, they have consequences!” Secrets and superstitions abound in the kingdom, but only a water creature who lives at the bottom of the lake and guards the sacred site knows the truth and can help Teralyn restore all.

In this fourth installment of The Gates of Heaven fantasy series, readers will learn of the fourth of seven sacred sites heaven set up on earth to prevent evil from gaining a stronghold over the hearts of men. Inspired by the traditional fairy tale Sleeping Beauty, readers will be taken on a journey that will leave them, in a word . . . speechless.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Lakin (The Wolf of Tebron) mixes classic fairy tale elements (witches, spinning thread from nettles, water spirits) with wisdom elements from the Bible in a highly imaginative amalgam that examines the making of meaning and the making of mercy. Lakin's clever revival of the power of fairy tales as she continues The Gates of Heaven fantasy series makes one miss them as a vehicle for instructing the young." -Publisher's Weekly

"The fourth Gates of Heaven fantasy (see The Land of Darkness and Map Across Time) is a terrific allegorical drama based on the premise that one needs to "Be careful with your words - they have consequences!" With a reverse Sleeping Beauty theme and biblical references on wisdom, passion and faith, fans will appreciate this timely tale of two siblings and the harpist, as sticks and stones can break my bones, but words can harm you too." --Harriet Klausner, top Amazon reviewer

5.0 out of 5 stars Lakin Provides another wonderful adventure! July 16, 2012
Format:Paperback
My Review: Once again C.S. Lakin takes us on a magical journey with talking owls and witches from the marsh in the fourth installment of The Gates of Heaven Series. This time the journey takes us to Wentwater, where tradition and superstition rule the every day life. In the mountains above known as The Heights knowledge and wisdom is power.

Justyn the boy from Wentwater who always questioned the superstitions grows into a young man to be educated at the university in The Heights. Determined to turn his back on the foolishness of his family and the others in Wentwater. Teralyn has always lived in The Heights but never felt like she fit in, for deep in her heart is a passion for music.

When Justyn's mentor asked him to take Teralyn to Wentwater for the annual festival he sees an opportunity to endear himself to his mentor. But he is soon consumed with much more than that when Teralyn seems to fall in love with his brother, Fromer. What follows is a classic story of love and the dangers of jealously and bitterness.

The author weaves several life lessons in this tale. I honestly don't think I've figured them all out. Having worked in higher education for over 25 years I see many Justyns. As well, I've seen many Teralyns who have captured the passion of music and life. I think it's safe to say we need to land somewhere in between.

Like the other books in the series it is appropriate for any age. If you enjoy escaping into another world that is beautifully painted with allegories this is an excellent choice. Although the fourth book in the series you do not need to read the books in any particular order. Having read the others there are locations and characters mentioned in each book from the other books.

Disclaimer: I would like to thank the author for the opportunity to read this book and was under no obligation other than to give my honest opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Read! July 16, 2012
Format:Paperback
Ready for another entrancing story from Gates of Heaven series by C.S. Lakin? The Unraveling of Wentwater doesn't disappoint. Enter into a world where superstition, miscommunication, prophecy, love, envy, hope and truth all clash their voices into a cacophony striking the heart of their land.

Teralyn struggles to speak words of truth to pierce the rigid mindset of the Heights, where everything has to form in logical sequence, and the superstition of the Wentworth villagers, which often borders on ridiculous. Then, in her failure, she is bound into silence where she faces the tyranny of her own heart. And discovers that each heart is capable of great evil or loving sacrifice.

Set aside a whole afternoon or evening, because once you start reading you may not be able to stop.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lakin's Gates of Heaven Series A Winner! July 16, 2012
Format:Paperback
While you may not want to read the whole series, if Fairy Tale Fantasy is not your thing, I found this latest book by C. S. Lakin, which is due out in July, particularly delightful from a reading and writing standpoint... Many writers will enjoy reading what happens when all the words are gone!

It all happened in Wentwater, a small village that was mostly made up of farmers and tradesmen. For some reasons, the town had become insulated from other towns, due to distance perhaps; however, it had resulted in layer upon layer of various superstitions that had been passed down through the generations... There were so many issues that had to be remembered that it was hard to even finish a day's work without ensuring that this or that was taken care of... Chicken feathers, for instance, that might have been left by the chickens or roosters had to be picked up immediately, else bad luck would surely strike!

One of the tragedies coming out of those traditions, was when a family had a child and the women of the village gathered, with the oldest woman having the privilege of naming the child... Fromer, one of the main characters had been thus named--but it had been by mistake. The woman had been planning on saying farmer, since she believed he would one day do that work...but what a mistake that turned out to be!

Now the town women were gathered for the birth of a girl to a young couple. But an old woman, a witch, busted into that gathering, asking why she hadn't been invited, and then proclaiming that the child would bring about the end of Wentwater!

And that superstitious town forced the parents to leave and burned down their house! Everybody had always thought that the baby had been burned along with that building...

Fromer and Justyn, his older brother, were both there that day and saw what happened. Justyn, who was very intelligent, remembered that; and as he grew older, he began to see that the superstitions and some traditions were not just silly, but could be dangerous! He was fortunate to later win a scholarship and moved to the location of a major school of learning that was located above the village. There Justyn thrived in learning and moved forward rapidly!

But a young girl named Teralyn who had Professor Antius as her friend, also lived there. She had been left at his home many years ago by a young woman and had since been adopted by parents who also were part of the faculty. Teralyn was going to be 18 soon and loved music. The town was happy and played music, dancing and singing, and a festival was coming soon. Antius suggested that Teralyn accompany Justyn when he visited home and she would be able to attend the festival!

Justyn came to care for Teralyn, but Teralyn had immediately, upon meeting Fromer, fallen for him! And as simple as that, the curse on Wentworth began to come true!

And continued until the village was no more...

But somewhere close by was one of the Gates of Heaven; and Teralyn knows where the Gate is...

Obviously, for me, this was a fun read! The result of the curse was simple--if a word was deleted from the world, then that item or person for which the word was used--would disappear too! One of the first to go was the rutabagus!

This is a wonderful series and I enjoyed this one even more. For 14+ and above, these books will be enjoyed by teens as well as adults! They are very well written but more importantly, have an important message in each! Highly recommended.
