Book Description

January 1, 1998
Biographies have been written of the liturgical pioneers in the United States, and scholars have studied particular aspects of the movement. This volume is the first to treat the movement synthetically. As a social history, the liturgical movement in the United States is examined not only from the perspective of the people who were behind it but also from its socio-cultural context treating such issues as immigration, ethnic identity, and poverty in the years of the Great Depression. Grounded in the theology of the Mystical Body of Christ, the pioneers' call for full and active liturgical participation necessarily included social responsibility. At the heart of the liturgical movement in the United States in the 1930s and 1940s was one fundamental principle: liturgy and social justice are inseparable. The author calls for a new liturgical movement and for the rediscovery of that inseparable relationship within the contemporary American church.

5.0 out of 5 stars Recovering the Foundations of the Liturgical Renewal, April 27, 2000
This review is from: Unread Vision (Paperback)
This book is a must read for all Catholic liturgists, especially those more recently drawn to this area of study. By tracing the pre-conciliar history of the liturgical movement in the U.S. and examining the pioneers of that movement, the author uncovers its foundations which were encouraged by Pius XII's encyclical "Mystici Corporis Christi" (29 Jun 1943) and inseparably linked to issues of social justice. It stirs one to reflect on the current liturgical movement which, having lost its roots in that earlier vision, has drifted into battles fueled by competing ideologies. In his concluding chapter the author offers some valuable insights for the future of the Liturgical Movement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Revitalize Your Parish, August 7, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Unread Vision (Paperback)
Fr. Keith Pecklers, a Jesuit priest, is a professor at the Pontifical Institute of Liturgy at the Unversity of Sant' Anselmo in Rome. He is a leading scholar on catholic liturgy. This is a must read for anyone interested in liturgy and the Liturgical Movement. The book is thoroughly researched and very readable. Catholics seeking to revitalize liturgy in their parishes should read the book. Try introducing some of the book's themes in your local parish and get the liturgical movement back on track. Tell your pastor to read it too.
