Unreal Championship 2 - Circa 2005
GOOD: - Play over Xbox-Live (and has downloadable content) - Gameplay is very different which makes it not another Halo clone - Graphics look great (Halo 2/Doom 3 quality) - Over the top matrix or anime style gameplay - Unique characters and unique setting - Lot's of maps and gameplay modes BAD: - Not really recommend getting this game if you don't have Xbox-Live or play a lot of system link - Fast and furious game play maybe too much for some who like slower paced FPS like Rainbow six or Counter Strike - New gameplay style may be difficult to get use to - Controls are difficult master - A.I. can be brutal and unforgiving, especially on higher difficulty - To unlock most of the characters or bonuses you have to play a lot of the single player levels IF IT FITS YOUR TASTE: - Great multiple player game on either Xbox-live or system link, Single player is also great training - This Unreal takes place in a Sci-fi futuristic Egyptian world sort of like Star Gate or Chronicles of Riddick - First person or third person camera (switch at any point) - Gameplay is really over the top even when compared to other games of its type like Unreal 2004 and Quake 3 - All characters not only use guns and rockets (etc) but swords staff's and some even use brute strength GAME ITS MOST ASSOCATED TOO: - Jedi Knights Academy 2 - Unreal Championship ADDITIONAL NOTES: - You can do Mortal Kombat style Fatalities and Radien (from Mortal Kombat) is an unlockable character

The Unreal series finally delivers on a console!!,

With most first person shooter games, having a mouse and keyboard is simply a most effective way to control the game, so the developers at Midway decided to take a different approach to the series. What we have now is a game that is a mix between a first person shooter (counterstrike, halo, doom) and a 3rd person action game (devil may cry, jedi knight: jedi outcast).
The balance feels just right. You start each match picking 1 of 4 power weapons (flak cannon, rockets, ripjack, or grenade launcher) and 1 of 4 secondary weapons (sniper, machine gun...) And of course you have your melee close range weapon which is different for each character you pick. Some characters have two swords, some have a claws, some have broadswords, some have sickles etc. As a first person shooter if you only use rockets etc, or if you only use melee weapons you are only experiencing half the game. You have to learn how and when to utilize the strengths of both the guns and the swords. The swords by the way are way cool cuz you can fly across the level for a one kit kill and you can reflect any type of bullets back at an attacker if you time it right. The game also has an easy to use "adrenaline" system. Basically the more people you kill the more adrenaline you have. Once you have enough adrenaline you can choose to use it on temporary abilities (extra speed, higher jumping, healing, defense shield, increased vision etc.) So part of the game also is knowing when to use your adrenaline. For instance if you just picked up the flag, it might be a good time to use that speed boost. Anyone familiar to the unreal franchise will be familiar with the "mutators" in the game. basically when you start your own multiplayer game you can have the game tweaked with low gravity, one hit kill, snipers only, quadruple jumps, and many more you can balance the game to your liking, which means the game never really gets old. The maximum # of players online is 8 which may pale in comparison to other online games, but any more than 8 people is really too many. The maps don't feel cluttered this way. The game by the way has 40 maps, which is pretty impressive since each has its own unique feel. There are jump pads, teleporters, walljumping areas, and a good overall flow of the levels. Oh and raiden from the mortal kombat series is a playable unlockable character (he throws lighting from his hands!!) In conclusion: PROS: -good balance of melee weapons/regular guns/jumping around the level like a madman. -melee weapons can reflect projectiles, and can be used for one hit kills -raiden from mortal kombat is a playable character -adrenaline (powerup) system is easy to use -40 maps -fast paced action -good graphics -adjustable violence levels CONS: -2 player split screen max -single player mode is not as strong as multiplayer. It's good practice against the bots, and it's fun enough so that when you have to earn things it's not boring, but i wouldn't get this game if you don't have xbox live or some friends -no custom soundtrack BOTTOM LINE: Unless you are a friendless hermit, you can't go wrong with this game.

UC2 is a very sophisticated shooter... what do i mean by sophisticated?
- balanced gameplay: this is THE FIRST shooter to incorporate melee combat in a way that you can actually beat a guy carrying a rocket launcher (or even a sniper rifle!) with your sword... u need to play it to believe it!! - balanced weapons: ever tried using ure assault rifle against a shotgun/rocket launcher carrying player in halo2? its one sided and hopeless... not so in UC2. Every weapon is potent, though you might need to change your tactics to get the full mileage out of it... - multiple characters - there are 3 categories of characters - high strength/low mobility, medium strength/medium mobility and low strength/high mob. The way you play the game will change based on the character you choose. You will need to adopt different tactics based on the strengths & weaknesses of the character... - 3rd person to 1st person toggle - for one-on-one shooting match the 1st person view is better while for high mobility melee combat the 3rd person view is better - and you can switch on the fly... perhaps the low ratings given by other reviewrs is because this game has a steeper learning curve than normal shooters... it takes time to explore the multitude of options available to you...plus tactics need to be changed based on the type of character/weapon/map you choose. The good thing about this is that the replayability of the game increases. overall one of the best shooters for xbox....if you have any interest in tournament shooters - just buy UC2.
