2.0 out of 5 stars If you don't got Live, its not worth your [$$]!
Many people will tell you that this game is 100 times better than the original UT, but after playing it for 2 seconds, I quickly came to the realization that this game was completely different. Lets start with weapons. There is no sniper rifle (only this stupid laser thing you can zoom in with but doesn't inflict as much damage), all the guns look cartoonish (as well as...

4.0 out of 5 stars Less, but also More, than it appears, May 26, 2003
This review is from: Unreal Championship (Video Game)
I bought this game when it first came out, expecting to be able to just jump into dozens of arenas, handle a huge arsenal of the usual weapons, and enjoy some good split-screen deathmatch after tiring of Halo. (I don't have Xbox Live, so shoppers needing details on that should look elsewhere in these reviews).

My first reaction was disappointment. It is complicated to set up a character and to figure out how to play splitscreen. Most of this is due to a patchy instruction manual. The action was also very frenetic, almost too chaotic for me after months of playing the more moderately paced Halo. The graphics were pretty good, but I'd heard only glowing things about the characters and maps, and it just didn't look that good to me. Most disappointingly was a seeming lack of cool arenas for deathmatch -- only about eight or so. I wasn't interested in playing the other game styles, like capture the flag, double domination, and bombing run. I would have only given the game about three stars based on that experience.

That's where my mistake lay. I recently launched into the single player mode, which takes you through all the various kinds of matches. To my surprise, I discovered they are much more fun than I had imagined. There are seven or eight different arenas for each kind of match, and the outdoor ones really shine. Also, in the full-screen single-player mode, the graphics rock. The textures, detail and colors are great, and easy beat Halo in my estimate. I've also gotten a chance to get used to the weapons, and when you learn the ins and outs of them, it becomes fun to frag opponents in new and inventive ways.

A couple complaints still remain. It is hard to tell some of the weapons apart, so sometimes I'm not sure what I'm using until I fire it a couple times. And I still haven't fully masterd the arsenal yet -- it shouldn't be this hard to get a handle on the weapons. Though I may just be dense, I haven't fully figured out the health/shield/adrenaline power ups. I just pick up every power up I see, but don't really have a sense of how they are applied.

I wish I could play this on Xbox Live -- the awesome full-screen single player experience really makes me pine for some live opponents and teammates. But as a standalone shooter it actually plays a lot better than I orginally thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars XBox Live is Where This Shines, February 8, 2003
This review is from: Unreal Championship (Video Game)
Unreal Championship for the XBox takes the great gameplay of the PC version and adds in better graphics plus XBox Live lagless gameplay!

We have Unreal Tournament for the PC, and in general it's a fun game. You have great graphics and fast-pace gameplay. The single play mode can get boring, but really it's just a training ground for the real challenge - on line play against real humans.

The problem is that on line games can be pretty laggy, and it can be a challenge finding a game that's really fun and not frustrating.

In comes Unreal Championship for the XBox. Again, single play is OK, but it's really all a training mode. It lets you get used to the wide range of characters (male, female, black, white, alien), the types of weapons and maps available. Once you're SURE you're comfortable with that all, it's time to step up to the plate. You take the game on line on the XBox Live.

Choose your type of game, the number of players you want to go against. You can join a game for novices if you're just getting started, or against the skilled warriors of the world if you're experienced. You can put mutators on the map, go for deathmatch or capture the flag or other gaming styles.

It's great! Play just with friends you know, or play against gamers around the world. You can even download new maps, skins and more as they make it available on line.

Highly recommended for any first person shooter fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best choice in First Person Shooter Multiplayer games!, October 14, 2002

This review is from: Unreal Championship (Video Game)
This game is simply a must have for any fan of the Console First Person Shooting genre,as well as anyone who loved Halo's multiplayer game.Unreal Championship will take the multiplayer experience to the highest levels found in a console game yet. Here are the reasons I think Unreal Championship will be really fun and a great experience for XBOX owners- OPTIONS!!!- 16 player online action on XBOX Live, the Broadband only online gaming service offered to XBOX owners by Microsoft, that features the voice communicator-a head set microphone device that lets you talk in real time to your friends and opponents online, and has an optional voice masking feature that makes your voice sound like a number of characters-robots,kids,monsters,cartoons,etc. There is also an optional ignore and mute feature.-Unreal Championship gives you the option to play up to 16 player games offline as well, via linking 4 XBOXes together. You have the option for 4 player splitscreen games on 1 XBOX.- Custom soundtrack feature.Unreal Championship allows you to play music from your own CD collection that you have saved to the XBOX Hard Drive as you play the game!-Fully customizable controls.Unreal Championship allows you to change the controls of the game to anything you like. You can set the aiming sensitivity higher or lower, choose what button does what, etc. Like Halo's controls? Make it just like Halo. You can also turn on,or shut off "Auto Aim",a feature that is usually disliked by skilled gamers. You can also choose this as a server side option on XBOX Live.-Computer controlled opponents called "bots"with almost human artificial intelligence.Digital Extremes, the creators of this game, have given XBOX owners the option of playing computer controlled opponents during matches with friends,or just by yourself when no one is around to play offline. The Computer controlled "bots" increase in difficulty as they fight you,in game. You also have the option to adjust the bots' intelligence before a game, setting their difficulty.Even if you don't plan on getting XBOX Live, or don't have access to BroadBand, this feature ensures that you will still get the full quality experience this great game offers.-Over 25 characters to choose from 6 different alien races.Unreal Championship has truly unique characters. You can choose from characters that look like Japanese Anime style robots,Heavily armored humanoids,Egyptian style warriors,Goth Warriors, etc. Variety is the spice of life, and UC has flavor! - Beautifully detailed fighting environments. This game has breath taking visuals, and cleverly made levels to fight in,that will provide hours of play. This game simply takes the greatest parts of the XBOX hardware, and uses them well. The bottom line, is that every XBOX owner that enjoys multiplayer games owes it to themselves to buy this game. This is what you bought an XBOX for.The visuals, the gameplay, the options. That's Unreal Championship.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get it, and get Xbox Live, November 18, 2002

I hate it when people review games that they don't own or haven't even played. Write that in your diary. No one cares how good you think a game will be. This and Halo are the best games I've ever played on any console or PC. The maps' graphics are as good or better than Halo's; however, the characters detail and animation isn't quite as nice as Halo's, which was pretty much flawless. This is simply because the characters move extremely fast and jump high. It's hard to make that look natural. This game is very fast paced.

Xbox Live is a must with this game. The in-game voice with Xbox Live is much cooler than it sounds, though the masking is kind of annoying. I played a 16-player game online this morning and it was seamless. For you Xbconnect-ers, no more going back and forth from the PC to the Xbox to find a game that doesn't lag. You can always find a game with a good ping rate on Xbox Live.

The rankings are constantly updated. They are specific to the different game types (Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Bombing Run, etc.). This is a pretty cool feature. I'm 392nd in Team Deathmatch baby! Where's my trophy?

Everyone who owns an Xbox should own this game and should be on XBL. PS2 is for women and children.

4.0 out of 5 stars online its great but single player is lacking..., June 1, 2003

This game is a wonderfully detailed futuristic shooter. You play in arenas with certain objectives. You may have to capture the flag, control 2 points at once, or just plain out kill the other team. This game has a very limited single player mode. All you do is cycle through all of the different games types until you beat them all. It can't take more than 4 hours to beat the game. However, what makes this game a gem is its Xbox Live features. As I write this review, Return to Caslte Wolfenstein has just come out. I think this game blows it away online. Unreal gives you the ability to create "profiles" that you can use online. Once you are online, you can do just about anything. Make a private game with just your friends, go kill some 'bots, or just go play Deathmatch, an every man for himself (or herself) all out fragfest. The online replayability is infinite. You can almost never get bored of this game. I would only recomend this game if you have Xbox Live. The single player is ok at best, but it becomes too easy to beat the AI. There is nothing like playing a human opponent. If you have Xbox Live, and don't own this game...What are you waiting for?

2.0 out of 5 stars If you don't got Live, its not worth your [$$]!, November 19, 2002
This review is from: Unreal Championship (Video Game)
Many people will tell you that this game is 100 times better than the original UT, but after playing it for 2 seconds, I quickly came to the realization that this game was completely different. Lets start with weapons. There is no sniper rifle (only this stupid laser thing you can zoom in with but doesn't inflict as much damage), all the guns look cartoonish (as well as the rest of the game) instead of deadly and threatening, the rocket launcher explosions are smaller than ever, and where is the trusty Enforcer!! Also, the dude that yells "Multi Kill!" isn't as dominant as before. You can hardly hear him! More things seemed to be taken away from the game instead of added on. Anyway, levels next. No classics are on this game which stinks, and they are all too boxed in, not a lot of out in the open environments such as LavaGiant or Facing Worlds in UT orginal. The only thing that made me put 2 stars is the Xbox Live feature. Its always fun playing online, even with a game like this. The start and in-game menus are hard to scroll through and provide lots of annoyances (such as changing your profile every two seconds, whats up with the profile, guys at Epic!!) Anyway, take my advice for what its worth, and I suggest renting it before you buy, to see how you like it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Only for Xbox Live, December 12, 2002

On Xbox Live (or probably over a network), this game is great. Lots of multiplayer action. And I like the fact that there are bots even in multiplayer (so when I'm outclassed I can run and hope the bots distract my opponents).

But on a single Xbox machine it is useless. I was hoping that it would be close to as fun as 1 player Halo, or cooperative-mode Halo, or Halo deathmatch (on a single Xbox). Problem is, you can't play deathmatch or cooperative play on a single Xbox! So all you're left with is fighting a bunch of bots.

If you have Xbox Live and you like deathmatch type games, then you'll probably enjoy this.

If you don't have Xbox Live, save your money for Doom 3 or Halo 2 (if you don't have Halo, go buy it NOW).

5.0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable, absolutely amazing, May 11, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Unreal Championship (Video Game)
This is easily the best multiplayer game for the Xbox. It is also probably the best online FPS ever made, and I promise you I have played a LOT of FPS'. Balance is nearly perfect, the weapons are all completely unique, the races and affinities (increased damage/rate of fire/ammo) contribute to the depth of gameplay. Gametypes are all great, each one appealing to a different player, or a different side of the same player. The maps are excellent, well balanced, and allow each race to employ it's unique traits and strengths while still forcing players to overcome each races weaknesses.

The pacing, though, is where the game really shines. This is easily the fastest moving game I have ever played, furious and chaotic, but still managing to stay strategic, by naught but the will of God. If you lack reflexes, prepare to face a steep learning curve if you jump into an online game, as your learning curve is gonna sting a little. And yes, I do intend this to be a compliment to the game - people who aren't good at a game should know it immediately, and should be forced to get good to win. Equalizers are just a games way of telling you it's ok, don't worry, you don't have to be good to win.

Minor framerate issues do exist, but this is less a matter of the game itself and more a matter of its interaction with XBL. Server upload/download is slow, mostly because this was a launch title for XBL. Things weren't quite perfected at that point. Hopefully by the time they BC it to the 360 that will have been fixed, although knowing MS they probably won't put a whole lot of effort into it.

In the end, this is a must-have for anyone who finds online shooters even TOLERABLE, the image of perfection itself.

I've run through single player mode countless times, and on Xbox LIVE!, on varying difficulties, and I must say, UC is one of the best FPS deathmatch games for the Xbox or any other system. I don't recommend playing this or any other game in Split Screen mode, it can be quite frustrating, and it took me a while to figure out how to start the Split Screen mode...

I've played the deathmatch modes in other games like Mech Assult and Halo, which are both great games, but they are lacking in on major area...

Speed! UC plays fast and furious, sometimes even chaotic, which is awesome during online play!! Halo is IMHO very boring in Deathmatch mode, simply because it's so S L O W...
Mech Assult is great, if you're into the whole "Mech" thing, but again moves very slow.

Overall, I recommend this game to anyone who even remotely likes FPS games.

halo gets boring after a few months of playing. when you are done with that, it may be good to pick up this game.
nice controls, and a good amount of weapns. the lag on Xbox live is annoying though. no vehicles and a limited varity give this game an abouve average rating. Why? because everything else is fine! the graphics and the gameplay is smooth and refreshing.
