UT 2003 was a pretty good game, I played the demo for hours and hours, did the same with the full game and the same with Unreal Championship for Xbox. So when I got the UT 2004 demo for PC, I was pretty excited. But nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to experience. I immediately felt at home with the game, considering many of the weapons were the same, and much of the gameplay. But there was sooooo much more. So I played the demo everyday from the time it was released up to the time I received the full game. Believe it or not, playing that one stage in Onslaught for an entire month never got boring, that is just how great the game is. The full game however, is simply AMAZING!! The graphics are absolutely jaw-dropping, especially with the highest settings enabled (you need a powerful system to run this though). I don't think I've even seen graphics this great on any of the nexgen consoles. Also the stages are massive (mainly the Assault and Onsalught stages), its amazing to think of how much detail and creation when into the design of the stages. The sound in my opinion is also great. You can hear every little minute detail, and much of the music is good and suits the stage. The control is perfect, with the default settings being totally comfortable, allowing for maximum gameplay. Ahh yess, the gameplay. You thought Quake was good, you thought Halo was good, well they're pretty crappy compared to this game. The vehicles, the weapons, the bots, the entire style of the game, is simply outstanding. There is not enough to say about the vehicles. They put Halo's vehicles to shame. There is a perfect gun for every moment, each completely different from the other. The single player is exceptional for a multiplayer type game, and obviously the multiplayer aspect is fantastic, with up to 32 player online deathmatch, and no lag (with a proper connection). There are 10 modes of play, and about 100 levels. Then there's still the Unreal Editor which will allow you to create your own. There is also way too much that I cannot list here that you would just have to play and find out for yourself. I would actually go as far as to say this game is PERFECT. There is actually NOTHING wrong with it and EVERYTHING good. If you can overlook the extremely minor 'problem' of the 5.5 gig install, you'd be absolutely happy with your purchase. And at $40 retail, you cannot find a better videogame experience, period.

4.0 out of 5 stars Back to the good stuff, April 20, 2004

This review is from: Unreal Tournament 2004 (CD-ROM)
As someone who was a major addict of the original UT, and somewhat put off by the 2003 edition, I have to say that I have found that chemistry again with UT 2004. For whatever reason, "it" is back, and this game recaptures a lot of the great fun of the original.

While I personally thrilled to see the return of Assault, my favorite mode of gameplay, I must agree with many of the reviewers that Onslaught is the real star here. Onslaught provides for a long, agressive and surprisingly focused battle, which uses its vehicles well on the massive boards. In particular, the vehicle designs feel like a tremendous amount of refinement has been put into balancing their strengths, which was one of the things that truly brought a lot of fun into the original as well. This allows any person who is good enough with their favorite vehicle/weapon to excel, and that is really what makes these games fun. Unlike some games, where the person who got whatever weapon was the best could just devastate the world, UT2004 has created a setup which favors skill over resources as well as any game out there.

Of course, Unreal is also known for its graphics, and UT2004 delivers here as well. Surprisingly smooth for the level of detail delivered, UT2004 is a treat to look at. Audio is basic and boomy, with the biggest change being the return of the original announcer's voice. The top end is VERY high, though. I own a fairly substantial 2.5 GHz P4, 512 MB RAM, and a ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, and find that the middle settings on most of the many, many adjustable graphical effects are the best for relatively skip-free gameplay.

Which does bring us to the major weakness of the game: You need a fairly beefy system to play. While it certainly work surprisingly well on the minimum requirements, the 5.5 GB install is staggering, and the largest I have seen for ANY product, not just entertainment. With all of that data, load times for levels are gratingly long (sometimes in the 3-5 minute range for some of the really enormous Onslaught levels).

But Epic also maintains the other leg of the Unreal tradition: user mods. UT has kept a massive fanbase that constantly produces a long stream of fun and creative levels to play, and UT2004 does nothing to discourage this. In fact, a lot of the new graphical features, and the vehicles, have thrown even more arrows in the quiver of the internet world.

And speaking of which, the integration of Voice Over IP (VOIP) into the game is a major plus, especially in the popular and team-oriented Onslaught, Capture the Flag, Bombing Run, and Assault modes. Strategy and organization can be vastly improved with the ability to actually TALK to your mates.

Given all of the above, I would give UT2004 five stars for gameplay and value (mainly because of the added value of the massive internet mod- and map-making community), but I have to take one away for the heavy requirements and long load times. But still something I see myself playing a lot, warts and all, because the multiplayer aspect is just too much fun, all over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Friggin' Awesome., February 16, 2004
This review is from: Unreal Tournament 2004 (CD-ROM)
Unreal 2004 combines UT 2003 and Halo together. I played the demo online and I must say the graphics are just beautiful. I have an ati radeon 8500 128mb, 1GB of corsair pc2700, and a p4 2ghz and I handeled the game at MAX settings at 1024x768 -- the engine is really something. For those of you who say that 2003 was better, thats impossible, because if you don't like the cars and "complicated" missions, there are good ol' deathmatch, team deathmatch, FFA and capture the flag matches without vehicles. Sound deserves 5 stars. If you have an audigy and a nice sound system (like logitech z560) this game is gonna rock your house. The ONLY thing I didn't like was the lagginess on big public servers (im talkin 32 ppl). Sometimes it gets outa hand and you cant even aim straight. But if its a LAN party - thats another story.

If you liked UT2003,then UT2004 will be off-the-hook!!

The graphics is phenomenal, also the AI isnot bad either.
I have 256mb Video,512mb ram,P4,DSL.

Over 100 levels of play, and new Maps.

My favorite game is the invasion board, you and your teammates (real or bots) must fight off a wave on monsters for 3minutes.
IF you are fragged you will respawn,if atleast 1 teammate survives,on the next wave, you will then respawn.

Each consecutive wave gets harder,as the monsters get tougher, and new monster appear, with deadlier weapontry.

I also like Onslaught,a sort on capture the flag game, but better. You must secure power-nodes,for you team. As you secure these nodes, you eventually get to the opposite teams base, and you can now destory there power-core to win.

Also, when playing the single player game, you win credits for every game you win against your opponent. You must pay your teammates, and also pay their injury bills. You can manage you team, sort of like XBOX's Madden 2004.

After installing your game, goto the website, and download the 12mb upgrade. This will allow you to play game, with out inserting the Play Disc.

enjoy...

But there is something here that has not been mentioned.
Hitches.

That's right. An enormous amount of people have been having problems with the game hitching and stalling no matter what is done (although various workarounds have been tried). The good people at Atari have been completely useless in addressing this problem saying to download the latest patch which doesn't fix the problem.
That said, the game is amazing. It's graphics are stunning (say what you like about Half-Life 2, I've played it and I still enjoy playing Quake (quake one)), the offline bots are fantastic and gameplay is just downright fun, the way games should be.
I just couldn't let all these fine reviews go by without a mention of this problem.
If you have this, or are planning on buying it, and have these problems then I recommend the Atari forums. The fans have done far more than the developers, though that seems to be a sad truth in todays world.

5.0 out of 5 stars There isnt anything better, March 25, 2004

We can all admit Halo raised the bar as far as quality and gameplay goes. UT 2004 has set the new standard. There really isnt anything buggy with this game, and for the first time in a long time you get more then what you payed for. More times than not you spend 50$ for a game that works 3/4 or 1/2 of what it is supposed to do. Here your spending 39$ or LESS!! on a PERFECT game. Frankly, I would have payed 50 or 60 for this game. Its just that good.
Half Life 2 and Halo two better come up with something pretty kick a** to be able to beat this game out of Game of the Year.
The Demo honestly doesnt give this game justice, its just a crum of a whole pie. There are 10 different game modes, Stats, Vehicles... AN AWSOME!! singleplayer. This game will keep you busy for the next 5 years+.
The Only Complaint I have about this game is the load times can be lengthy.
If you dont take my word for it, take the 2000+ plus peoples word for it that already have the game.

this is the most entertaining video game ever. it has SO much depth and character that you could play it for the rest of your life and never get sick of it. i thought Unreal Tournament G.O.T.Y had a lot of weapons, but this game's arsenal is ridiculous. and not just hand-held weapons, but tanks and turret guns and all kinds of stuff. the levels are beautiful and COMPLEX and there are hundreds of them. THIS GAME IS WAY BETTER THAN HALO, HALF-LIFE, OR ANY OTHER MULTIPLAYER SHOOTER. M-O-N-S-T-E-R KILL!

5.0 out of 5 stars Freakin Awesome!, October 4, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Unreal Tournament 2004 (CD-ROM)
Unreal Tournament 2004 is the best first person shooter game I have ever played! The graphics are quite impressive. It really seems like you're actually there in the game. The designers paid very close attention to detail on every level; that's what makes it so neat. Realistic rain, smoke, fire, and lightning effects certainly help the game to be more enjoyable to play. There's a horde of different bots (characters) to fight against, like "aliens", robots, and humans.
There are many modes to play in, for example: there's a Deathmatch mode where you just try to kill as many of the bots as you can, an Assault mode where you complete a mission with a team, an Onslaught mode where you capture and hold strategic points in order to destroy a power core in the end, Capture the Flag mode where you take the other team's flag and return it to your base, Domination mode where you capture points and hold them for as long as you can, and many more (10 total). These really add to the excitement of the game by giving a variety of things you can do. My favorite mode is Onslaught because there are all sorts of vehicles to drive around and blow up the other team's nodes with.
With multiplayer there can be up to 32 people playing against one another on LAN or online compared to Halo which only allows 16 people to play at one time. You can start your own server or join up with someone else's. There are usually many servers online running at any given time during the day of which you can connect to and play with whoever is on there. I recommend a faster connection than dial-up because it can lag a bit while playing larger maps with a bunch of people.
When I get tired of playing the maps that came with the game or just want more excitement, there are hundreds and hundreds of maps available online on various sites for no cost. Simply type "unreal tournament maps" into a search engine and numerous results will show up. There are also mods out there which are complete modifications to the game and give it a totally different feel. You can even make levels of your own with the level editor (UnrealEd) supplied with the game. Just about any scenario you could think of can be made with the editor. The possibilities are really endless. You can even design your own vehicles, weapons, and characters with Maya Personal Learning Edition which is also supplied with the game! I have made a couple maps of my own and it's a lot of fun.
There is free demo version available from www.unrealtournament.com if you want to try the game out. One drawback may be that you need a powerful computer for the high graphics. I have a 3GHz processor with 512MB of RAM and 32MB video card and it runs great without too many bots running around. The installation size is large (5.5 GB), but don't let that scare you, it's an awesome game!

This review is from: Unreal Tournament 2004 (CD-ROM)
UT2004 is the best multiplayer PC game of 2004. The single player is non existent, less so then Battlefield Vietnam. Not only is is fun to play, you can run it on a crappy computer! The minimum v-ram is 32 mb! Holy Crap! This game look incredible as well. Textures, character models, vehicles, enviroments, everything.

UT2004 won best multiplayer PC game form Ign.com, which I think is perfect. It is the best. Asseult is back along with a new mode called Onslaught. the perpose of Onslaught is to controll certain controll points and defend them. And one you have a certain ammount, a schield around the enemys reactor thingy goes away and you have to destroy it. Onslaught also has vehicles. My favorite vehicle is like a jeep, but press the left mouse button and two razor sharp blades swing out and cut down anything in their path.

UT2004 has definetly earned its M raiting. You can say to people "Die B&%CH!", which I have to say, is fun to do online. Its un-realisticly gorey, body parts fly when you hit someone with flack from behind.

UT2004...buy it if you like online FPS, if you dont, your missing out.

Concept- Actually make a UT better then the first

Presintation- 9.6- The Box art is good and the menues are polished to perfection.

Graphics- 9.4- The game looks great. You can also run it on any machine.

Sound 9.0- The battle sounds and in game techno music is good, but the announcer is freaking anoying. DOUBLE KILL!

Playability- 9.8- Fast paced and engaging. The vehicles add a whole new stratagy.

Entertainment- 9.4- The most you will have playing a game online this year.

Replay Value- 10- Impossible to put down
