3.0 out of 5 stars Good game if you have people to play with
This game was not so fun when I first got it because none of my friends had it so I had to play alone. Some of the levels are just too hard to beat alone even on an easier bot level setting. Then I got some friends to get it and we had a lot of fun with it. Beat the game and played a lot of multiplayer online. Only bad part is that it does get old rather fast.

UT3 is probably the fastest FPS on the consoles at this time. With lightning fast gameplay and stunning visuals. I only noticed very minor texture pop ins and the occasional framerate dips but really I'm being nitpicky here, UT3 looks and plays fantastic, near perfection for it's style of gameplay and probably the best looking, best performing game currently on the 360 to date.

With the addition of 5 New Maps for the 360 version, 3 of which are wholly new and 2 are reinvisioned versions of the PS3/PC version with Necris themes. All of the maps look quite good and some are fantastic looking.

I've noticed that they improved the 360's version , by tweaking the core controls with a 'minor' aim assist , I noticed that the bullets track a little better and behave more realisticly. I don't prefer aim assist myself ,BUT , I will say the 360 version is the most refined version yet ,aside from the HUGE GAP ,of not supporting user created mods, it is the most polished port.

The split-screen is fun,if your into that, UT3 360 supports split-screen online multi,co-op,local,and System Link. (no split-screen ranked matches though)

All DLC that's available for the PS3 is included in the 360 version (ASIDE FROM USER created mods)

(If your still into UT 'fast twitch'style gameplay)
The multiplayer is liquid fast and fun, with Game Modes DeathMatch ,Team DeathMatch,CTF,Vehicle CTF,Duel, and last but not least Warfare which is a team based mode involving Capturing and linking together 'nodes' with your orbs ,so you can destroy the enemies core. Warfare adds a little strategy to the twitch gameplay mechanics of UT3.

UT3 is so fast,so frenetic , you'll barely have time to come up for air .
I was playing UT3 for about 7 hours and didn't even realize it, there's definitely no down times in UT3.

The single player campaign ,is little more than glorified BOT matches, but that's not such a bad thing as the enemy AI are really about as close as you can get to real humans, (sometimes better) especially on the harder settings.
There isn't much of a story in the campaign, but that's ok I don't wanna watch a bunch of mini-movies anyways. But It would've been nice to have a deeper 'in-game' story mode, instead you get the occasional little cutscenes in between matches. AT least you have access to all online matches offline as well. Some of the MAPS are absolutley stunning as you progress into the game, these maps by far look superior to just about any game on the 360. There were quite a few 'jaw dropping' moments in the maps. When EPIC said in there early interviews with various magazines that UT3 'makes Gears look ugly' , They weren't kidding. But the comparison ends there, don't expect a Gears style cover system. UT3 is pure unadulterated lightning fast gameplay. I can't get over how fast this game performs. Other games like Gears,RSV, move at snails pace compared to this game, its insanely fast. You know some games slow down your player to help the graphics perform better, BUT UT3 , turns the dial past 11 and it still looks smooth as butter.

Switching weapons are mapped to the RB and LB respectively and of course all have some form of alternate fire (LT),
at first I would've preferred a quicker layout of weapon toggle, BUT , the controls are really easy for any 360 FPS veteran ,you shouldn't have any problems jumping right in and playing.
The vehicles all drive and perform closely to Halo's Warthog ,there quite easy and intuitive as well ,with a little learning curve ,that's a perfect time to check out the campaign's offline BOT matches to hone up your skills for online.Especially sharpening your skills for capturing nodes and learning the best routes in the maps. There's also tons of unique flying vehicles .

UT3 is a fantastic game on the 360 ,with the only real downside to the 360 version is the lack of 'user created mods' and the lack of a 'real' story in the campaign , BUT THERE IS TONS of game content offline with the BOTS.

I've seen from interviews from EPIC you can expect some solution for user created mods most likely in the form of DLC ? who knows? . But the 360 is so meaty ,so full of game content it really is an exciting game and the lack of user created mods should'nt detour you from picking up a copy for yourself. If your looking for a deep single player story campaign and don't have LIVE access I would suggest renting it first, as there's no real deep story here ,BUT , even offline the BOT matches can be fun. There's just no match though for human counterparts online,UT3 true shining feature is the Multi-player and it's one of the best looking ,best performing games on the 360 to date, if not THE BEST.

I got through the camapaign's single player in about 17 hours. I gotta admit the BOTS are extremely impressive on the harder settings and you get (8) difficulty settings from Novice to Godlike. Trust me these BOTS will test even the most skilled players. You can even play 'instant action' offline ,and manually set Bot skill levels, number of combatants,Goal Score,Time Limit,Opposing Bot Faction, and Force Respawn toggle. WOW what can I say ,stuff usually reserved for online play only is ALL available to the non-LIVE players. Very nice indeed.

Overall UT3 is much better than I had expected. EPIC really knows what there doing when it comes to Unreal Tournament style gameplay and they tweaked the 360 to its maxium limits and to my surprise ,the game is exceptionally smooth, clean, and fast paced with out so much as a hiccup or a very rare framedrop on the 360. Definitley pick this game up a very, very solid FPS.

PEACE

5.0 out of 5 stars Twitch Gaming Returns!, July 13, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Unreal Tournament III (Video Game)
Ahhh! Finally a 360 game that measures up to the original PC version of Unreal Tournament. It's lightening fast, gorgeous, and like greeting an old friend.

All the UT favorite weapons are here, the nuclear redeemer, sniper rifle, shock rifle, flak cannon, and bio gun. Sadly the only one that's missing is The Ripper, which used to shoot saw blades and had an alternate fire option that would let you bounce them off walls and around corners. As in the PC version the Redeemer can be fired guided or unguided, and you bet you can use the alt fire on a shock rifle to launch a ball of plasma that you can then shoot to cause an explosion.

The game includes many multiplayer maps to choose from including an updated version of the classic Deck 16! You can play these via system link or on Xbox Live. Maps are beautiful in HD and play like greased lightening on Live. No more tactical sorts of slow moving action or rechargeable shields. Its a welcome return to old school twitch gaming previously only seen on the PC. You need to earn your armor and fight for health packs to stay alive. There's many game types to have hours and hours of fun which including Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, CTF and a couple of new variations like "Warfare" and a one on one "Duel" mode.

The interface for multipayer hosting is very much like the original Unreal Tournament where you can make a subset of the list of maps and arrange them in any order you'd like to play them in and the game will automatically queue them up. The manual also mentions being able to add "Mutators" to the game, like the original, though I've not played with that option yet.

UT3 also includes a single player campaign that can be played either as a single player or in a co-op format with friends. For the most part the campaign mode is designed as a collection of the different multiplayer game formats and more like a tutorial on how to play the different game types simulating online play with bots. It's fun but it's not where the real action in UT3 is, which is online multiplayer playing against real thinking people. You will, however, learn about many of the new game types and features like the numerous new vehicles that are available. There are flying craft, tanks, and even war of the worlds style tripod walkers.

Graphically the game has a similar look to Gears of War, but is much cleaner and sharper. Depth of picture on a 1080i HDTV is amazing. I've played on Live with my settings all set to max and encountered no issues with frame rates or slowing. Like the original PC version it runs like greased lightening but also looks amazing.

If you're into old school, high action, fast paced, online multiplayer fragfests THIS is the game for you. If you're into slower paced duck and cover strategy gameplay this probably won't be for you. Fans of the original Unreal Tournament will enjoy it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty sweet... Worth the wait., July 9, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Unreal Tournament III (Video Game)
I'll admit I was waiting for the Xbox 360 verson because all my friends have Live. Of course, this game is optimal on PC, but it is still pretty darn awesome on Xbox.

I've been a big Unreal fan since the first game, and this one doesn't disappoint. As the previous reviewer said, the graphics are stunning in 1080p and I have noticed no texture pop-in or frame rate hiccups in the single player campaign. Online, I've found a few games that lag a bit, but the great thing is that Epic hosts dedicated servers for this game. Those don't lag at all, and that's just friggin' sweet.

I adjusted the turn sensitivity all the way up and this game is smokin' fast. The action is nonstop and plays out at a breakneck pace online. This is the fastest FPS you'll ever play on a console and the whole thing runs without a single hiccup. Epic did an awesome job optimizing this for 360.

The controls are almost flawless. The only things I don't like are that (1) you have to hold the D-pad right to voice chat. That's a pain when the pace is so fast, and (2) you can only cycle weapons forward (using RB). The LB brings up a radial menu that you can select weapons from, but again, with the pace as fast as it is, this will get you fragged over and over again. You'll just be mashing the RB as you cycle through weapons. Let's just hope that you don't miss that Flak cannon because if you do, you'll be cycling through them all again.

Online is the way to play, as the single player campaign is dry and little more than a series of tutorials. The warfare mode is totally awesome online. This is the mode to play. Also Vehicle Capture the Flag is freakin' sweet too. Team deathmatch is my favorite. Matches go to 300 kills and when you've got 16 people fragging each other on a small map the action is literally non-stop.

Sucks that there's no Modding or User Generated Content, but I'm sure there will be DLC on the marketplace. Epic even said they might develop and release the most popular maps that users have generated. I'm not holding my breath for that, but I'm sure there will be at least some DLC, and there are alread tons of maps to play.

Final words: Buy it, and meet me online.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fairly Fun Game, but over the top story, September 9, 2008
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Unreal Tournament III (Video Game)
Unclear if people really get this much into the story/culture of UT. The basic game hasn't really changed in the many versions of UT (which if you haven't played before has several games: capture the flag, deathmatch, blow up the other guys reactors in a team based environment).

The primary problem that I have (maybe it's because I'm in my 40's) is that I don't care about the back story... It adds nothing to the game, and provides nothing about each level that helps me win or even appreciate the environment (I'm sure this battle with the Necris has a fascinating political base, but WTF, it's a shooter!?). I'm sure that there are people who are looking for more than a team based shooter with frenetic action, but really... The action is fun and frenetic, and the comments are amusing from the announcer. (I personally enjoy the title of "Flak Master" the most).

The guns haven't really changed since the earlier versions. There are some new vehicles, the nastiest is the "dark walker". The other vehicles aren't really game-changers.

The most confusing of the game modes is the node-core game, where there are nodes that you "link" (i.e. capture) together to connect to the enemy core reactor. When you own all the nodes inline, you can strike the enemy core. Certain nodes also give your team extra benefits (like the ability to get tanks...) Most of the time this is pretty clear what to do, occasionally not.

In some of the capture the flag levels, the levels themselves are huge and confusing, and it is easy to get lost. In the node games, there are directions to point you to the node you need to attack.

As far as age appropriateness, my 8 year old has no problem playing, and enjoys it. He also gets annoyed by all the back-story chatter during the cut scenes. The violence is cartoonish, and amuses him.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Cool, September 11, 2008

It seems that most people I've talked too are/were very familiar with all of the old computer versions of Unreal. But my review is for the Xbox 360, which, like many of us, had never played any version up until buying this one for the 360.

This game will have you hooked. It is super fun, and the gameplay on plasmas and lcd screens is amazing. There are LOTS of things to do, including the main campaign, and random fun instant action levels.

NOTE: The best part about this game is that the initial campaign is basically just a training mode to get you online (great idea!). The game is designed for online play. So, by just going through the campaign and having fun, you are now ready to hook up Xbox live and you'll fit right in.

The 1up.com review of a "C" grade is absurd, and I've read it. If only because every reviewer is comparing it to all the other releases dating back years and years. As a new player to this great xbox 360 game, I was very impressed.

IMO, this beats Halo 3 in a heartbeat. Why? Because there are, among others, two specific 'mutators' (which modify the game play) that you can turn on together. One is Speed Freak, and the other in Low Gravity. Now, imagine this. Playing the fastest Xbox 360 character ever made, and then being able to jump the equivalent of about 300 feet in the air while looking down at flying machines, tanks, other aliens and firing your crazy alien gun at everything! THAT is what I call fun. I put Halo 3 away, and simply love hosting matches with these mutators on.

This is by far one of the years most underrated games, without a doubt. The 'maps' that you can play are beautiful. There's something for everybody here, trust me.

Kids LOVE it! (Forget the M rating, it's ridiculous, and based on a few bad words ONLY in the campaign) And older dads will love this too. Plus, the best part is that there are no Halo 3 GODS for the most part. Meaning that when you join Halo 3 online, you usually get clobbered. With Unreal Tournament 3, I've met some of the nicer people online, and there is plenty of space for the average gamer to grow his/her talent, including the BOTS that you can set up in "Novice" mode to help you along.

This is a GREAT game, and I only wish the gamer magazines would've reviewed this with fresh eyes specifically for the Xbox 360.

5.0 out of 5 stars From an offline standpoint..., June 9, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Unreal Tournament III (Video Game)
Unreal tournament III was of course designed for online multiplayer. I am the kind of gamer who prefers offline playing for several reasons, not the least of being all the annoying little kids online. I love a good campaign game, but sometimes I just want to sit down and play a little without having to think at all. That's where this game comes in.

First of all, let me say that this game is fantastic for offline gameplay. The split screen mode is polished, the different game modes are all fantastic, and the number of maps is a definite plus. On the subject of maps, each and every one is fantastically detailed and all are really fun while being very diverse at the same time. This keeps the game interesting even after hours and hours of play.

Now on to the bots. The bots in this game are really impressive. Most multiplayer bots in games are either so stupid that they just run around jumping, or so good that you can't beat them no matter what. The bots in UT3 are really polished. You can have as many as 15 bots on a map with you. There are eight different skill levels for bots. It goes Novice, Average, Experienced, Skilled, Adept, Masterful, Inhuman, Godlike. Right now I am playing at Skilled (I am relatively good at FPS games, but not as good as many people I know). The bots are smart, but not to smart. The only fault I have with the bots is that in large open maps, they are ridiculously good at very very long distance aiming. Other than that the bots are perfect.

The modes are Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, CTF, Vehicle CTF, Warfare, and Duel. Warfare is pretty interesting, mixing in elements of games like Star Wars Battlefront or Battlefield 1942. You have to capture nodes by destroying and replacing them with your own and make a chain of these nodes to the other team's base. Once the chain is established, you have to go in and destroy the opponents Power Core. Once the power core is down, you win. It's much much harder than it sounds, and the more bots you have playing with you the harder it becomes.

The vehicles in the game are really impressive. Although they aren't in many of the deathmatch maps, they are really cool. My favorite is a glowing ball with tentacles that it can use to walk (the visuals are incredible) or attack people with. I find the programming and graphics coming together in this masterful piece of art beautifully. As you jump off of the ground in it, trying to land on a higher platform, it's tentacles will identify the surfaces you wish to grasp and catch them, allowing it to move over just about any terrain. Incredible graphics.

All in all, this game is fantastic even for the offline gamer like myself. This is by far the best deathmatch mode in any game I've ever played (Yes, I have played Halo 3, COD-MW2, etc) for offline play. If you're on the verge, definitely order it. Well worth my money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast paced action, January 19, 2009

This review is from: Unreal Tournament III (Video Game)
I was gonna pass on this one since Gears 2 is already out and I did not want to drop 40 on this game. I found it discounted to 20 and picked it up. I have to say, it is quite a fun game. Some of the game modes are a bit on the annoying side, but it is a fast paced game and quite different from anything else on the 360 right now. It reminds me of counter strike in terms of game modes. The single player game is nothing more than the game teaching you how to play the game. The real meat is online, so check it out if you are interested in fast paced deathmatch type games.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unreal Tournament still thrills in UT3!!!, August 8, 2008
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Unreal Tournament III (Video Game)
Unreal Tournament is an online multiplayer shooter that serves up over-the-top graphics with non-stop action. There are two types of players in a UT game -- the quick and the dead. UT delivers hardcore, old-school gameplay and delivers it with speed and spectacle. And yes, with blood and gore too.

The newest iteration, Unreal Tournament 3, offers the same polished shooter action renowned in the early titles along with a slew of new vehicles. Two stand out as something truly fresh to gamers: the Axon Leviathan, a huge mobile battle wagon with turrets for multiple players to inhabit and the Necris Darkwalker -- perhaps the eeriest vehicle ever. The Darkwalker looks like a tri-legged walker from War of the Worlds frighteningly re-imagined by H.R. Giger. If it sees you, run; its heat ray will burn you down to bones almost instantly. Of course, the game gives you opportunities to climb aboard this evil machine and do some of your own terrifying....

As stated in other reviews, UT3 is an evolutionary, not revolutionary, step past earlier efforts. And believe it or not, that's really for the best. While much of the gameplay isn't particularly fresh, it doesn't need to be. Gameplay this fast and furious, this gorgeous and polished, doesn't get old quick. If you have played earlier versions, it'll be like riding a bike again after a long time away -- second-nature but still exhilarating!

There are a few hiccups in the frame rates, yes, but nothing to get upset about. UT is one of those games where I will complain about a momentary graphics glitch like somebody hit my mother but if I had to give the game up, it would have to be pried from my cold, dead hands. People grumble that the PS3 version lets you make and play mods and the 360 version doesn't. This is quite true sadly, but the 360 does have exclusive extras and a superior online experience in Xbox Live.

My biggest complaint about UT3: all the hours of sleep I'm missing playing this game! This game is like virtual crack in that it gets me addicted to my own adrenaline. When I do finally get to sleep, my dreams are invaded by mental images of me still playing this game. Kinda scary, but kinda cool too. Gives you an idea of how intense and how gloriously infuriating this game is.

If you're new to UT, I suggest you play what passes as the single-player campaign as your training or you will be pwned when you take the fight online. There is a bit of a learning curve here for the casual gamer, but this game rewards you with a tremendous depth of experience for a "twitch" shooter. What's great about this game is that when you die, you can immediately get back into the action (except in "Duel" mode) and try again. No waiting to get back in and certainly not for 12 or so seconds like in Halo when you accidentally "suicide."

Unreal Tournament 3 is a must-own game for Xbox 360 shooter fans.

(Bonus: Also check out Unreal Championship 2: The Liandri Conflict. It's a backward-compatible original-Xbox game that offers first-person shooter gameplay married to third-person melee action. It's a cool twist on UT that takes some time to master but will make you feel like a Jedi Knight when you've gotten it down. This still works online. And did I mention there's fatalities? The game can be found used for $5 and is a steal at that price!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Unreal Tourney III, just like the other UTs, August 13, 2008
By
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Unreal Tournament III (Video Game)
Fisrt off, I am an old school gamer, PC mostly. I played UT online via PC when it first came out in 1999 and the Dooms and Quakes before that. I've played them all since then but only the PC versions. I've since become an xbox fan. I was bummend when they originally planned to only make this for PS3 but stoked when they changed there mind and brought it to 360.
The Game
It is so much fun to play. The graphics are great and game play is fast and furious. For thos who have never played any Unreal Tournament, think of it as a "Gears of War" version of online "Halo 3". Because basically, Bunji stole the whole online gameplay from the original UT. It is all about "run n, gun". For those who have played the 2003 and 2004 versions, only a little has changed. They added vehicles and only a couple of maps, they used some of the old maps in this game. A little disappointing for those of us that were looking for more. (I guess they were too busy twith Gears of War II)
It's still a great game! Have fun with it!!
