conductor, arranger, pianist & Grammy Winner...done it all,
This review is from: Unreel - O.S.T. (Audio CD)
With inventive arrangements and guest musicians galore...Waldman sends the jazz community reeling, or should I say "Unreeling"...Randy is in a class by himself, always giving the "jazz lover" what they want...and begging for more!Remember Waldman working with the Manhattan Transfer on vocal arrangements...Streisand on the classic "Somewhere", one of my favorite songs and what a haunting arrangement, thanks to Randy. Leave it to this master of artistry to excite the average and above average jazz fan with his magical touch on ~ "THE JETSONS"(gives space travel a whole new meaning)..."SCHINDLER'S LIST", the John Williams theme from Spielberg's Academy Award Winning film..."AMERICA", Broadway hit "West Side Story" - the Leonard Bernstein big dance production has Watts, McChesney and Randy whipping up a special treat for one and all...my personal favorite is "FORREST GUMP", great film with Tom Hanks and the unforgettable music of Alan Silvestri that became another character in the story...last track "MANIAC", shows another side of this one-of-a-kind arranger/musician, reaches out and grabs you. Entire album is a gas...hats off to Kevin Clark (producer) ~ Studio City String Orchestra ~ all the various guest artists and Concord Jazz for this special album featuring the talented ~ RANDY WALDMAN! Total Time: 57:28 on 12 Tracks ~ Concord Jazz CCD-4967-2 ~ (2001)

Vinnie is to drums what God is to the universe!,
This review is from: Unreel - O.S.T. (Audio CD)
This is a masterpiece of American television and cinema showtunes. Waldman has masterfully arranged these tunes, some readily apparant, some not so, yet all are familiar. The real jewel of this recording for me was the performance by the master of all master drummers, Mr. Vinnie Colaiuta. You will hear him masterfully and most tastefully exhibit what he has labeled as "superimposed metric modulation". If you don't know what this is, try to decipher the time signatures of these tunes with their respective changes, and you will quickly find it all but impossible to do so. He tactfully weaves from one bar to the next with surgical precision of each of his percussive voices, always staying true to the form. Mr. Waldman should be congradulated for allowing Vinnie to do his thing, as many arrangers would try to reign in what they would percieve as artistic indulgence. This CD is fun, fun, fun. Vinnie lets us hear the pinnacle of modern drumming on a CD perfectly suited for anyone with an appreciation of American screen culture.

Terrific musicianship, terrific arrangements, terrific jazz,

This review is from: Unreel - O.S.T. (Audio CD)
My 19 year-old jazz drummer son gave me this CD 2 years ago, and every time I pop it into my car's CD player I smile all the way through the traffic jams. The arrangements are in a variety of styles (bop, ballads, big band, cool ensemble pieces), and Waldman is second to none in his ability to bring sparkle and life to a standard tune. All of the musicians are top-notch, but Colaiuta on percussion does stuff I've never heard anyone else do. (Including my son, for the time being!)
There are many impressive works on the album, including a turn on "Favorite Things" with some really interesting poly-rhythms. But if you only heard the "Jetsons" theme and nothing else, you would have spent your money well. Everyone's playing a million miles an hour on this terrific arrangement; the horn section is tight and powerful, Waldman displays great dexterity and ingenuity on the piano, and Colaiuta on the drums...well, words can't describe his incredible technique and creativity. Somehow they've packed the energy of an atomic reactor into a single song; prepare to be blown away!
