7 of 7 people found the following review helpful By A. Peck on July 12, 2004
Format: Audio CD
I had the privilege to see Robert Hurst's trio (featuring Jeff Watts and west African guitarist Lionell Louke) at last winter's IAJE convention. Other groups at the conference included Dave Holland's quintet and Matt Wilson's quartet among others. The trio was the best ensemble I saw there. Afterward, I immediately began looking for a CD with this phenomenal bassist as leader.
I was unfortunately unable to find anything by the outstanding trio I heard in February of 2004. Hurst, whose classical training is evident in his virtuosic handling of his instrument, was all over both electric and upright basses! The trio on Unrehurst 1, though, was a welcome substitute. Robert Glasper and Damion Reid on piano and drums respectively are unbeatable in their own right. The group in general produces vigorous, unpredictable jazz with surprising, spontaneous nuances, but never looses its grip. The elements of time, improvisation and communication are always top notch.
This isn't background music, but the band shows its softer side on several tunes. During the ballad April Foolproof, colored supremely by Reid's cymbal work, the whole ensemble controls its volume and texture so well that you'd think that the players had been playing exclusively together their whole lives.
The best part of Unrehurst Volume 1 (besides the strong, while unusual set of liner notes which the disc is supplied with) is the indication that there is plenty more to soon hear from Robert Hurst and the extraordinary musicians he plays with. I can't wait for Volumes 2, 3 and so on.
