The real rhythms of Carnaval,
By DJ Joe Sixpack (...in Middle America) - See all my reviews (TOP 500 REVIEWER) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER)

A nice collection of recent Carnaval themes, including some by stars such as Martinho da Vila, who helped shape the modern sound of the escolas. These are all themes of recent vintage, from 1980-99, but that's hardly a liability. The sound quality is great, the melodies are rich... Sure, the rhythm gets a bit repetitive if you listen to the whole album all at once, but taken in small doses, this is pretty fab. A recommended record from a neglected style.

A gem from Veloso's new wave years...,

Very sweet. Sure, it has the trappings of New Wave-y lite pop, but this record is so playful and affectionately performed, it hardly matters. Some mildly embarrassing moments, but overall one of his better albums. Nice version of bossa nova legend Carlos Lyra's "Coisa Mais Linda," and a zippy little samba number at the end, with sister Maria Bethania chipping in on vocals. Recommended.

The ever-versatile Caetano,

This is a great album, and shows Caetano's versatility. From his pseudo-rock number "Eclipse Oculto" to the Spanish/Portuguese "Quero Ir a Cuba" to the hauntingly beautiful "Você é Linda" (one of my all-time favorite Caetano songs), Caetano never disappoints!
