Book Description

January 1997
This autobiography details the story of Larry Flynt's rise from small town beginnings to become one of the richest men in America, owning a string of nightclubs, sex outlets and, of course, the infamous pornographic magazine, "Hustler". Along the way, he married a go-go dancer, spent years on trial fighting obscenity, libel and contempt charges; was shot and paralyzed from the waist down; and became an unlikely defender of the First Amendment rights.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The life of Larry Flynt should make for a great autobiography. But the manic glee, unabashed sleaze or righteous anger that could have energized the life story of the founder of Hustler magazine isn't here. Instead-perhaps because its publication will follow the release of a film (The People vs. Larry Flynt) focusing on Flynt's time in court-this mannered narrative, written with the help of Ross (Compassionate Capitalism), seems to strain toward respectability-even though Flynt admits he has spent most of his life on dope or drink. Flynt (b. 1942) left Appalachia for the Army at 15 and grew up fast, soon taking from his unfaithful wife the lesson never to be faithful to a woman again. He built an empire from go-go bars, then in 1974 established Hustler. He claims his magazine's notorious explicitness caters to the "erotic imaginations of real people," and he somewhat pompously contends that the working out of his principles in print has protected press freedoms (a parodic Hustler ad lampooning Jerry Falwell was defended, ultimately, by the Supreme Court). Flynt's most tender moments here come when reflecting on his strong-willed, hell-raising, drug-addicted wife, Althea, who eventually died from AIDS. In 1978, while he was being prosecuted for obscenity, Flynt was shot by an unknown assailant, and lost the use of his legs; nonetheless, he says that he has found happiness despite a core of sadness. Maybe so, but-at least judging from this book-he seems to have lost his edge in the process. Photos not seen by PW.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't put it down!, November 28, 1998

This review is from: An Unseemly Man: My Life as a Pornographer, Pundit, and Social Outcast (Hardcover)
After I searched the book store for over an hour, I finally found "An Unseemly Man". Once I started reading the book, I did not put it down until I was finished! I was a big fan of Larry's before I read the book....I was his #1 fan when I was done. I laughed out loud and shed a tear or two. You don't have to like what Larry does for a living...but don't make judgments til you read the book. You might see Larry in a whole different light. His story is truly amazing!

4.0 out of 5 stars Something for everyone, sex, politics and religion., December 5, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: An Unseemly Man: My Life as a Pornographer, Pundit, and Social Outcast (Hardcover)
Larry Flynt, the publisher of Hustler and tons of other mags has finally written his memoirs. Titled An Unseemly Man it could just as easily been called A Bad Boy. The book is amusing and a quick read. He exposes his whole life to the reader, from his humble Kentucky beginnings to his luxurious life as a multimillionaire. He is not a great man and this is not a great book, but if have any interest in him pick it up. He has spent a lot of money and even spilled his blood protecting free speech. All this from a guy who just wanted to make a living giving people what they want

3.0 out of 5 stars 1st Amendment Crusader or Porn King?, January 28, 2012

This review is from: An Unseemly Man: My Life as a Pornographer, Pundit, and Social Outcast (Hardcover)
Interesting autobiography on Flynt's humble beginnings and later Hustler magazine exploits and his fight for 1st Amendment freedoms. To make the book more interesting there should have been more focus on his seedy past and less on the court trials. If you like John Grisham novels you might like this one as well.
