Book Description

A tightly written set of terse flash fiction and intense pocket poetry from one of the newest talents. Winding the tales of a dozen characters and expertly executing the crafts of prose and poetry, these unrelated works form a cohesive whole where only blank pages previously existed. Existential, riveting, and always provocative, each chapter leaps from the page embedding itself into the mind of the reader. This book forces the reader to think and invites reinvestigation.

By Leah (shared kindle account)

I've always been a bit leery of short story collections. I find them to be unsatisfying and oftentimes difficult to get into.

Every single story in this book pulled me in, taking me for a journey and leaving me wondering how I'd managed to end up back in such a boring reality once I'd finished. The poetry was wonderful and, for one of the very few times in my life, I felt it actually spoke to me. I've read the book twice now, though each time I read it so fast that I felt almost lost when it ended. I fully intend to read it more slowly next time, if I can.

J. K. Lewis' flash fictions are glimpses into different worlds. These might include frolic rabbits watched by an elf; guns and shots; chainsaws that destroy trees; "normal" fast food waitress touched by a muse; conspiracy theories; caffeine praises, and so on... Some might cause a smile, others goose bumps, but each of the poems and shorts stories triggers into the reader minds a fantasize that might continue after the written fiction ends.
It's a nice idea to read them while doing something else: traveling on a clean airplane or a chicken truck; sunbathing on the beach or lining in a bank were the situations where I read it myself and the experience was amazing (the good format of the text made this easy). The juxtaposition of the different verisimilitudes, between those in fiction but also with that one outside generated an effect of unreality of the world itself. As the transformed city that one of the characters discovers when gets out to work before dawn, our world (or our sight) seems transformed by the experience of these disruptive worlds.

Great read, It inspired some writing as well. I would definitely recommend this to fellow poets and lovers of poetry.
