5.0 out of 5 stars The worship album I have been looking for, October 9, 2002
By
J Lee Harshbarger (Ypsilanti, MI United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Unshakeable (Audio CD)
Back in 1989, I bought the praise & worship album "The Rock Cries Out" by Petra Praise. To this day, there is no worship album I've heard that surpasses it. For years, I have been looking for a new praise & worship album that could give a comparable worship experience, but every album I have tried comes up short. Sonic Flood, Delirious?, Tree 63, Passion...they're all good, but none of those albums managed to really PULL pull me into worship like "The Rock Cries Out."

I was interested in "Unshakeable" by Acquire The Fire primarily because of two bands I really like that are on the album: Superchic[k] and Plumb. I figured I'd probably like the songs by those two artists but most of the rest of the songs would be just okay; that has been my experience with previous multiple-artist worship albums.

But this album was different. Much to my surprise, this album knocked me off my feet. Unlike some other reviewers of this album, I have never been to any Acquire The Fire event; this review is based purely on hearing this album.

I go to Vineyard church of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and one thing I love about that church is that they have fabulous worship. The band really rocks out, even with soaring electric guitar jamming solos, yet the worship is deep and humble. I've wanted an experience like this on CD, and I have finally found that in "Unshakeable."

The album begins with two rock-out tunes, "Holy Moment" by Superchic[k] followed by "Fill Me" by Jeff Deyo. "Holy Moment" reminds me of Psalm 24--"We will run through Your gates, O God, with a shout of love." There is such a joy in this song, an excitement about entering into the presence of God for worship. In the same musical mood, the message focus changes with "Fill Me," where the enthusiasm is one of being so passionate about God that the worshiper acknowledges submission to God--"I'm laying down my rights so You can take control."

From here, the album slows down a bit with more submission before God as Nick Gonzales of Salvador sings, "Take this sin from my heart...I wanna be clean...pure...holy." The song that follows is the climax of the album for me. With a tune and lyrical style that is similar to a hymn, but with a powerful electric-guitar-based chorus, "The Wonderful Cross," performed by two members of The Waiting, is so vivid that when I listen to this song, I don't just listen but I feel like I'm at the foot of the cross looking up at Jesus as the blood flows down his skin. When I worship through this song, I am reminded of the painful sacrifice Jesus made for my sins. I must recite some of the words here:
"Forbid it Lord that I should boast
Save in the death of Christ my God
All the vain things that charm me most
I sacrificed them to His blood
Love so amazing, so divine
Demands my soul, my life, my all."

After this incredibly powerful hymn, things get quiet with the next two songs, "You Are My King" ("Amazing love, how can it be, that You my King would die for me") and "Breathe" ("And I, I'm desperate for You").

The album could stop right here and it would still be the best thing to come along since "The Rock Cries Out," although you can't exactly compare the two, because "The Rock Cries Out" celebrates God's power and victory, whereas this album is about coming before God in humility, confessing your sins, and finding how sweet it is to be loved by Him even though our sins are so ugly. This passion for God, this confession of sin, is something I just don't feel in the other popular modern worship albums.

But it doesn't stop here. Things go into high power again with Phil Joel singing "Unshakeable" and Plumb performing "History Maker." The album closes out with two mellower songs, ending beautifully with a fading out chorus of "God of wonders, beyond our galaxy, You are holy, holy...."

I like worship songs with powerful electric guitars, and this album has it. Normally I don't like slow songs, not even slow worship songs. But on this album, it's so GOOD that I even love the slow songs!!! To listen to this album is an incredible worship experience, available in your own home or car whenever you want to meet God.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Unshakeable (Audio CD)
I recommend that you buy this cd. I went to Acquire the Fire at the Tacoma Dome, and these were the songs we sang. Everyone that went with us bought one. We listened to it all the way home (6 hours) and we never got tired of it. I especially like song #8, Unshakeable. It is really cool. If you're not sure if you want to buy it, get it now. It is my favorite cd.
