Shaver's fantastic "Unshaven" definitely tops the pile of my desert island discs. This cd jumped out of the speakers and grabbed me when I first heard it almost 9 years ago. From the first cut, the listener is transported to a dark & smokey honky tonk where Texas's greatest singer-songwriter and his incendiary band hit the stage and don't let up until the last notes fade.
For over 20 years, Billy Joe Shaver had been lauded by both the critics and his contemporaries yet criminally ignored for by the music buying public. However in the mid 1990's, Shaver jumpstarted his career with a fierce new sound, a new band that featured his guitar-prodigy son, the late, great, Eddy and an outstanding new album "Tramp On Your Street". "Unshaven" was released hot on the heels of this amazing and featured many of his best loved songs, including "Georgia On A Fast Train", "Hottest Thing In Town", "Honky Tonk Heroes" and "Live Forever".
As a veteran of many Shaver's live shows, I can attest this as fine of a snapshot of their live show that you'll ever find. For me their live shows often approached the level of a religious experience. Man...I miss those days and that music!

This CD puts you at an up-close table and you can practically smell the cigarette smoke and dried beer on the carpet. Billy Joe is backed by a 3-piece rock trio (not to be confused with a country band) led by the late Eddy Shaver on guitar. Besides the tremendous songwriting, it's Eddy's guitar work that super charged the band's live performances during this era. His homegrown creativity of blending styles and tones is powerfully evident throughout this live CD. Billy Joe's resume is packed with songwriting credits affiliated with many Nashville artists, although his own presentation style of these songs is far removed from Nashville and sits right in the heart of a Texas honky tonk. If you can't stand the way Nashville does it, boy have I got the CD for you!

This is THE live album that captures the searing guitar work of Eddy and the soaring lyrics of Billy Joe Shaver. This is on my list of "desert island" discs and a MUST for Shaver fans. Billy Joe Shaver is one of the greatest songwriters alive today and his songs shine in this setting. You can almost taste the beer and feel the amps scream! Eddy was one of the best guitar players around, hands down and this is full testament to his power. This show was filmed for a planned concert release but the project was unfortunately later shelved. A shame we'll never get to see it but at least the magic can be heard again and again...

Accurate praise has been posted here already about this shining moment of Shaver-family renaissance. To add, however: a live band can only be as good as its rhythm section, and this disc has the insanely great Keith Christopher playing bass and singing. And I *think* that's Craig Wright on drums (correct me someone if I am wrong)-- the same drummer from the Steve Earle "Shut Up and Die Like an Aviator" tour and record. This lineup of Shaver is a great band in its perfect incarnation!

I was intrigued with the CD as soon as I heard it playing in the store where I bought it. It had a rough yet energetic sound. I listened to 3 or 4 tracks while in the store and bought it without hesitation. While I had not heard of Billy Joe Shaver or Eddy Shaver before I bought this CD I have no hesitation recommending it to anyone else. The energy dislplayed throughout all the tracks is worth the price, the lyrics and the music are a nice bonus.

This live CD recorded at Olde Smith's Bar is IMHO the best CD Billy Joe Shaver has put out. It features the honky-tonk, road-house sound that Billy Joe and Eddy made together. They rock it completely on this one.

God Bless Billy Joe and Eddy.

In 1995, I obtained a Discovery Sampler CD called Country. One of the artists is Shaver and I Love You 'Til The Cows Come Home is one of two cuts that were included. That song has been one of my favorites for 15 years. I didn't really investigate who it was until today. I discovered it was Eddy Shaver playing and that he died early in life (38# on December 31, 2000, as it seems so many really great guitarists/artists seem to do. I've been playing guitar on and off since I was around 12 years old #1958). I've heard just a handful of truly inspiring guitartists. I know there are hundreds of gifted pickers, but in my mind just a few that inspire me. Eddy was one of those. I can't believe the range of leads this guy could assemble on command. He moved from blues to country to rock and back with so little effort. Shows you how close all of those genres of music really are, doesn't it? Today, I downloaded Unshaven: Shaver Live At Smith's Old Bar and shed a tear for just how outstanding a player this guy was. Who know what greatness might have come when he was to record his debut solo album a few months later. It seems that the really gifted have to experience so much sadness and pain in life. I can only say that I'm glad I took the time to discover more info about Eddy and plan to search for more of his music.
