High Fidelity Magazine

"May well be the best solo guitar album since Leo Kottke's justly renowned first effort."

5.0 out of 5 stars Too Great to be Known, August 21, 2003
By
Jim Edmondson (Pulaski, TN USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Unspoken Intentions (Audio CD)
I heard a cut off this one late night on NPR's Echos show. I instantly bought it not realizing it was cut over 20 years ago. The album is Gulezian by himself with one guitar and whether he was age 19 or 50 years old (he's 19 on this), he is just amazing. I put this on and just tooled around my house cooking, etc...loved it the first time through. Very much like Kotke but more melodic and approachable. Reminds me more of Degrassi than Hedges. I would love to see this guy play, he is simply amazing. You cannot have too much of his stuff in your collection...SERIOUSLY!

4.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Acoustic Guitar!, August 19, 2004
This review is from: Unspoken Intentions (Audio CD)
I first had this album on vinyl twenty years ago, when Michael performed at the college I went to. And now it's on cd, with two extra tracks that are as good as the rest of the album.

It's just acoustic guitar, but it's like he's playing with four hands or something--sounds wonderful. My favorite is the spacey "Cafe on the Rings of Saturn".

I won't make comparisons to Kottke, Fahey, or Hedges--Michael is in his own class.

If you ever get to see him live, do it. His sense of humour really makes his show fun, and it's a shame that didn't get captured on the album, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best acoustic guitar albums ever, June 6, 2007
This review is from: Unspoken Intentions (Audio CD)
I started listening to acoustic guitar solo music over 20 years ago. I travelled the common paths, listening to Fahey, Kottke, Preston Reed, Robbie Basho, Peter Lang, Michael Hedges, and some other greats. I have to honestly say that years ago I was drawn to obvious speed but as I grew older Michael Gulezian's music presented itself in a less obvious but more expressive and powerful way than the music of the other artists. He plays in swirling clouds of notes; he plays around and through the song. I have seen him in concert twice and his slide work is utterly mesmerizing. Not to detract from his cd's but his playing is even more powerful and expressive in concert. His music has evolved also as demonstrated by "Meandering Jelly: A Contraceptive Failure" which later appeared on his live album (Concert at St. Olaf) as "Meandering Jellique". I cannot play the live version without cranking the volume to catch every full note that he builds on before furiously thumping his guitar. He made "Unspoken Intentions" when he was nineteen which makes it all the more incredible. Michael is Michael, and I will not say that he sounds like anybody else. The safest description is that it is fingerstyle guitar. Even the musical influences of his compositions defy any one classification. "Unspoken Intentions" does not have a single weak song and the cd has a gorgeous extra cut exemplifying his brilliant slide work, "Golgotha". This album was simply decades ahead of its time and will always be great listening. I still listen to it with headphones. If you love fingerstyle guitar and want to listen to an artist that is distinctly different than the rest, I recommend this album.
