5.0 out of 5 stars why are you in my head?, August 2, 2006

Mezarkabul is a metal band from Turkey that blends middle eastern music with metal. The vocals are clean and sometimes hypnotic and the guitars blast out great heavy riffs. The guitars are also used to create middle eastern melodies which sounds good. They also throw in an actual middle eastern instrument here and there. I think that it would have been good if they sang a couple of these songs in Turkish because it would have given it a more middle eastern vibe but the english lyrics work out just fine. If you're looking for some good and different metal then you should buy this cd, you won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best oriental influenced metal band yet., April 5, 2002
This review is from: Unspoken (Audio CD)
I personally witnessed this band's emergence over the years.
Their last album Anatolia was a good example of heavy metal with many oriental influences and Turkish instruments like ney (used for piped music). Mezarkabul (pentagram back then) gave signals with Anatolia album that their uniqe style of metal was coming. Most interestingly, the band performed in front of Bill Clinton and his family with a traditional Turkish folk song from this album (metal style of course) during his visit to Turkey.
With unspoken, Mezarkabul finally establishes their own unique style. Outspoken, like Anatolia has lots of Turkish influences and instruments and band succeeds to balance these influences with the barrage of hard hitting power metal (not Euro style, thank God)
Songs like In esir like eagle and lions in cage will please all the fans of the genre. Album as a whole is very successful and has no fillers. Actually , outspoken is one of the best power metal albums of the year.

5.0 out of 5 stars No band is like this, February 21, 2002
This review is from: Unspoken (Audio CD)
NO ONE! Picture Metallica meets Maiden meets Turkish music with a splash of Solitude Aeturnus. Crunching riffs, unique melodies, great singing make this one hell of an album. By it today you've never heard anything like it, unless you've heard Pentagram who they used to be.
Picks:Unspoken, Puratu, This Too Will Pass
10/10

5.0 out of 5 stars Exellent!, August 4, 2004
This review is from: Unspoken (Audio CD)
This is a masterpiece guys. A top effort thats reached after more than 15 years of work. "In esir like an eagle", "Lions in the cage" and "Puratu" are my personal favorites. But all of the songs are killer.

I listened samples, but because of low freq. and choosing intervals of the songs its hard to get an idea how cool all these songs are. Their official site is www.mezarkabul.com go and listen better samples of full songs! Listen "Lions in the cage" full version. You'll get the point.

But if you trust me, buy the full album! You wont regret.

5.0 out of 5 stars "The truth is Unspoken...", January 27, 2005
This review is from: Unspoken (Audio CD)
Whilst Unspoken is Mezarkabul's debut release, this is just so technically speaking. The original name of this fantastic band is Pentagram (which is what they're still called here in Turkey), but they had to change names because of legal reasons. There are two other bands with the name Pentagram, one from the USA and one from Chile. Mezarkabul's previous album, Anatolia, was released through Century Media under their original moniker, but Unspoken was released by Noise Records.

Without doubt, Mezarkabul is the greatest and most original Heavy Metal band that has emerged from Turkey. They started out way back in the mid-80s as a speed/thrash metal band when they were all teenagers but slowly developed their own unique sound and are currently one of the best bands with subtle Middle Eastern influences, lots of Turkish tradional instruments, a brilliant sense of production and melody in their songs, and above all very talented musicians.

Unspoken sees the band further developing their unique musical vision which they started on Anatolia in 1997. Four years later, Mezarkabul is as strong as ever, with a minor lineup change in their guitarist department. Their music, however, is still rock solid with plenty of oriental motifs and a plethora of interesting melodies played by interesting instruments, such as 'ney' and 'zurna'. It's hard to explain them; you have to hear them to believe how much they add to the compositions. At its core, Unspoken is Heavy Metal with skull-crushing riffs that sometimes pleasantly border into old school doom as in the title track and the opening riff of "Pain" (one of the heaviest ever!). However, the band being speed/thrash rooted, there are also slight nuances of Thrash Metal to be found here, but not excessively, and some [Morgana] Lefay-like vibe. Not that the two bands sound remotely similar, but their 'heaviness' is characterized by the same elements: power, honesty and integrity.

"In Esir Like an Eagle" and "Lions in a Cage" would be great choices to represent this album. Both are heavy and melodic metal anthems with hooks, gripping choruses, fantastic bass guitar and powerful vocals. Hakan Utangac, the guitarist, adds to each and every track with his Iommi-like riffs, only in a Middle Eastern key. "Lions in a Cage" is a very interesting track, just when you think it's going to end, the song is sliced with a fiery guitar solo and then the sad ney instrument respectively. "For the One Unchanging" and "Pain" are my favourite songs on this album, though quite uncommon for a Mezarkabul fan, mainly because of vocalist Murat Ilkan's jaw-dropping performance. Ilkan is a very articulate singer; he can shift from smooth singing to face-ripping high screams effortlessly. Check out the "Darkness kill my Paiiiiiiiiiin!" scream which always reminds of Dio's scream on Strange Highways.

There are two instrumental tracks which add to Unspoken's brilliance. Both songs clocking in at nearly eight minutes and displaying the band's ability to compose well-thought, multi-textured music, they interlock melodic guitar riffing with ney (and zurna on the closing track "For Those Who Died Alone") and are engulfed in atmospheric keyboards. Keys aren't too heavy in this album, only on the title track, but their impact is huge! I love how the soft ney delves into the merciless thrash riff and then goes back to its sad moment. This could really bring tears to your eyes. I know very few Heavy Metal bands who can write such touching instrumental music without relying on showing off their advanced technicality.

"Take My Time" is perhaps the heaviest song on the album and is graced by a fantastic guitar solo in the end. "This Too Will Pass", on the other hand, is catchy yet HEAVY, with hooks and an accessible melody line. "Puratu" is the first part of an Anatolian theme and its complementing part, "Tigris", was released a year after on the band's all Turkish album, Bir. The production is crystal clear, with much attention to details, the mix is crisp and fresh. Also note that the album was mastered at the famous Abbey Road Studios in England.

It should be in your best interest to give this band a listen. They are original, accessible and incredibly talented. It's a shame they take so long to release their albums though. At least their music gets never old as I had to buy this album twice. It was worn out due to overplay, yet I just couldn't get enough of it.

This album is off the hook. Personally, in my opinion this band is the BEST. This album is a love head-banger album. If you're into heavy metal you'll fall in love with this album. Ever since I bought the album I just can't stop playing it. Plus I highly recommend their "BIR" and "ANATOLIA" albums as well. Best heavy metal band ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mezarkabul (Pentagram) at its best., August 20, 2003

This is the best album Pentagram (known as Mezarkabul outside of Turkey because of some legal issue) has put out so far.

Songs like "Lions in a cage", "In Esir Like an Eagle" would play to the top, if they were from a US rock band.

The middle-eastern melodies are very well mixed with metal riffs, without boring you with cultural overdose.

If you enjoy bands like "System of a Down", "Tea Party", you have to try this. ...

Best hidden gem of its kind.
